Ladies and gentlemen,

I am seriously considering terminating the pc audio list.
There is very little traffic on the list but a lot of spam. Also, with the
advent of DMARC I have no idea who is or is not receiving list messages.

I could take the list to Google Groups or some other commercial e-mailing
list if there is enough interest, or, maybe some one else would be
interested taking on administration duties of the list. There is a cost for
the domain name and web space.

Jonathan Mosen started the list almost twenty years ago and it might have
out lived it's usefulness.

Comments are welcome. Best to contact me directly.

As to slow downloading of data, I have noticed with ours, and those of some

Hi!

I just bought one of these units and would like to make comment on my
purchase.

Firstly I think that the unit does a brilliant job for what it is in
most respects.

The sound from the internal speaker is a little muffled however - having
already heard a VR Stream - I was already prepared for this, a bit of an
annoyance one might say so to overcome this I use a small BUniden
hand-held amplified battery speaker I've had for years, cost me $25
about 7 years ago, pity the Stream doesn't have Bluetooth but I guess a
product can't have everythint.

Now I don't know whether this is my unit in particular but I have
noticed that the downloading of data seems to be incredibly slow
compared to other devices I have on my network, I used the "Check for
Updates" function and - according to that - the firmware is up to date,
well at least the data does get downloaded I guess.

There's a hell of a lot of functionality packed into the VR Stream box
and a lot of this - such as the Internet Radio, podcasts and so forth -
I won't bother using - given I already have better solutions for that
sort of thing - but for those who don't the VR Stream provides a great
entry level to the world of Internet Radio and Podcasting.

Getting online with the Vision Australia library was a snap so I
downlaoded a couple of books.

Again, I have other Apps and so forth which I prefer to use myself but
the Stream is convenient for reading, no doubt about that even though I
read all my newspapers these days straight from the web site its good to
know I have a reliable backup.

Hi!

If you've not taken a serious look at the Spotify Music platform in a
good while - and you like your music just the way you want it and not
how your local radio station wants it - then take a good look at the
modern Spotify.

I won't go into all the changes I noticed since I last saw it before
today but the changes are numerous and these changes have really given
me something to think about regarding the other Music services I'm
subscribed to, it might very well be that you'll find that Spotify will
provide your each and every need for your music listening habits.
particularly if you're a Spotify Premium user.

I used the Spotify IOS App to do my exploration, I found accessibility
to be first class.

Right now I'm listening to the "Soft Rock" playlist on Spotify through a
Spotify connect device, the Sangean WRF28D portable radio.

Connecting the device wasn't hard to do, I just selected Spotify from
the Source list for the radio using the Undok App, I then opened the
Spotify App from Undok and used the Connect icon at the bottom of the
screen to locate the radio, the music started playing through it when I
double-tapped the "Play" icon.

There are a lot of Shortwave radio sets out there which are blind friendly
but the trick to getting a blind friendly shortwave set is to be prepared to
learn how to use it.

The cheapest around which is an all-round good performer would be the Degen
D-1103 sometimes known as the Kido - hope I got the spelling right - 1103,
the set has been around a good while and as far as I know is still available
for well under $100.

The radio covers all the Shortwave bands along with Medium-wave and
Long-wave bands, has SSB tuning should you want it and performs well.

There are a few tricks to this radio but overall the interface is extremely
well laid out.

One of the things I like about the radio is the analogue feel to the tuning,
yes it has a knob for tuning the radio with the added tester year feel of
each band wrapping around.

For example you select a band and start tuning using the dial, when you come
to the upper or lower end of the band - depending on your thing direction -
the radio doesn’t just go to the next band rather it wraps around to the end
and continues tuning.

The 1103 has a numeric keypad though its a little strange to get used to at
first as all the numbers are from left to right.

Buttons are easily identifiable, keypad buttons are small round buttons
whilst function buttons are rectangle in shape.

These radios were being sold by the giant discount Aldi Supermarket chain in
Australia up until recently.

I have a document which describes how to use the radio and its many
functions which I was involved in compiling if anyone would be interested,
email me and I’ll send along a copy or - if demand is great enough - I’ll
put up a Dropbox link.

Re: The Future of Winamp

2015-02-17 Thread Evan Reese
I mostly agree with this. The chief problem I've had with not having an
update to Winamp is that it doesn't know what CDs are anymore, except those
newer ones that have their track data embeded in the CD itself. I have
gotten some of those recently. But most CDs still come back Unknown when I
try to rip them with Winamp.
However, now that I've found a CD ripper that usually does know what it's
ripping, and that works very well, (EZ CD Audio Converter), not being able
to do it with Winamp is not such an issue anymore.
So it would be nice to see that someone was behind the program, but it
doesn't matter as much to me now as it used to. As long as it keeps working
I'll keep using it for what it can do.

First, I tried to install the latest CDEX. After three tries, I finally
found a site that actually let me download it. The first one said the
page could not be displayed, the second and third had download links, but
nothing happened when I hit them. One even said my program was
downloading, but my IE11 didn’t download anything. Finally, I downloaded
the file and tried to install it. It wanted to install three third party
programs, AdAware, Tune Up Utilities, and (I think) Pluto TV. My Window
Eyes 8.4 could find no check boxes to select whether to not install
these, so I just clicked Next and figured I’d uninstall them after I got
CDEX successfully installed. However, when I hit Next after Pluto TV came
up, it asked me to select an option and an Okay button came up. I reached
an impasse at that point, since I couldn’t see how to select the option.

So that was the end of trying to install CDEX.
Then I tried VLC Media Player. Installing that was easy. Then I brought
up the instructions on how to rip CDs with it that Dane so thoughtfully
provided a while back. However, not all those controls in setting up the
ripping process are accessible for me with Window Eyes 8.4. For example,
I cannot check the CD check box. It just won’t change from Unchecked no
matter how many times I hit the space bar. I can’t even get it to play a
CD that’s in the tray. I know it plays because I can bring up Winamp and
play it. The problem with Winamp of course is that it doesn’t know what
it’s playing anymore, so I’m trying to find a ripper that knows the
tracks.
I looked up Exact Audio Copy, but it looks intimidatingly complicated to
me frankly.
So, anybody got any suggestions for an ACCESSIBLE ripper that I can try

Re: Looking for An Accessible CD Ripper

2015-02-11 Thread Evan Reese
One reason for a profile that I can think of is how you want the program to
handle track titles. For example, for a single artist CD I don't want the
artist's name to appear in the title of every track. However, for a various
artists compilation, of which I have quite a lot, I do want the name of the
artist to appear in each track title.
That's just a small example. There may be other reasons to have profiles,
but I can't think of any right off the bat.

Another one wich I like and wich is free, is called mp3 ripper. It can

If the website don't work, let me no.

Yes, it is indeed from POIKOSOFT. And yes, it is almost completely
accessible so far as I can tell with my Window Eyes 8.4.
There are a couple of unlabeled buttons, but it's not hard to figure out
what they do from hitting them. For example, there's a button to let you
browse to where you want it to put the files it rips, but my Window Eyes
doesn't say Browse. Also, I can't find any Save button in here anywhere,
so

I need to check to make sure it still has my settings whenever I open it.
You can edit profiles, but I still haven't totally got the hang of how to
save them exactly. And when you try to delete a profile, it starts at the
top of the list, and not on the profile your cursor is on when you go into
the Edit Profile dialogue box.
Still, it is working very well overall.

Looking for An Accessible CD Ripper

2015-02-10 Thread Evan Reese
Hey Guys,
I tried to install and use two CD rippers today without success.
First, I tried to install the latest CDEX. After three tries, I finally found a
site that actually let me download it. The first one said the page could not be
displayed, the second and third had download links, but nothing happened when I
hit them. One even said my program was downloading, but my IE11 didn’t download
anything. Finally, I downloaded the file and tried to install it. It wanted to
install three third party programs, AdAware, Tune Up Utilities, and (I think)
Pluto TV. My Window Eyes 8.4 could find no check boxes to select whether to not
install these, so I just clicked Next and figured I’d uninstall them after I
got CDEX successfully installed. However, when I hit Next after Pluto TV came
up, it asked me to select an option and an Okay button came up. I reached an
impasse at that point, since I couldn’t see how to select the option.
So that was the end of trying to install CDEX.
Then I tried VLC Media Player. Installing that was easy. Then I brought up the
instructions on how to rip CDs with it that Dane so thoughtfully provided a
while back. However, not all those controls in setting up the ripping process
are accessible for me with Window Eyes 8.4. For example, I cannot check the CD
check box. It just won’t change from Unchecked no matter how many times I hit
the space bar. I can’t even get it to play a CD that’s in the tray. I know it
plays because I can bring up Winamp and play it. The problem with Winamp of
course is that it doesn’t know what it’s playing anymore, so I’m trying to find
a ripper that knows the tracks.
I looked up Exact Audio Copy, but it looks intimidatingly complicated to me
frankly.
So, anybody got any suggestions for an ACCESSIBLE ripper that I can try that’s
not overly complex, but that will produce reasonably good results.
I’d really appreciate some advice.
Oh, how I miss being able to do the job with Winamp!

filename and folder settings right the first time.

Looking for Speak Recommendations

2014-11-20 Thread Evan Reese
Hey Guys,
I’m using a Windows 7 64-bit laptop with Window Eyes 8.4. I have absolutely no
experience with buying these, but I want to get some speakers for my laptop. I
don’t have a huge amount of space. I’d like to put them on either side of my
laptop if possible. I’m putting them on my Christmas list for my Sweetie, and I
don’t want to abuse her generosity. Can I get anything decent, or even half
decent, for $100, or maybe not too much above that?
I only have one headphone/microphone jack, so I’d like to get USB speakers if I
can to keep that jack free for times when I still want to use the headphones.
Finally, as I said, I have no experience at all with USB speakers. Can I just
plug them into an available port and Windows 7 install an appropriate driver,
or do I have to install the driver from a CD? Will I have to worry about
accessibility problems with that?
Thanks for any recommendations.

anion® 2 Series III multimedia speaker system •A performance upgrade over
most conventional computer speakers

•Wide, lifelike sound at any volume made possible by Bose® technologies
•Play an additional device—just connect to the auxiliary input

$99.95
Their USB ones which are a fake surround system are $300. So no go with
these. How ever if I may, the Companion 5 multimedia speaker system is epic!
I have it and though it is a fake surround sound system, it is Bose, so I
love it for what it is. I wish they would do a true companion 5. Meaning an
actual 5.1 system around your head abd still being USB of course.

How Can I Preserve the Date Created Field When Copying My Albums to Another Computer?

2014-10-02 Thread Evan Reese
Hello,
A few months ago, I got a new Windows 7 64-bit laptop. I’m using Window Eyes
8.4 on it. I copied all the albums I had ripped or downloaded from my old
Windows Vista laptop to a hard drive, (since I don’t have a PC transfer cable),
and then from the hard drive to my new machine. Unfortunately, all the Date
fields, including the one I want to preserve, the Date Created field, were set
to the date and time I copied the files. I do sometimes view my albums
alphabetically, but most of the time, I like to view them in the order I put
them on my system, and I can no longer do that on the new laptop.
A friend of mine told me about Robocopy, but the version that was on my Vista
laptop didn’t preserve any date fields when we tried copying some of the albums
to the hard drive. Then he found a more recent version that is supposed to be
able to do that. But I wanted to ask here if anyone knows of an easier way. I’d
rather find something more modern, that is more user friendly, something that
you don’t have to run from the command prompt and remember various slash
options, if I can before installing this, which may not work any better than
the one that’s on there now. Of course, it has to be accessible with Window
Eyes, which may also limit my options.
I really appreciate any help on this.

Hi Evan, try DVD Video Soft; just Google it; I use their YouTube to MP3
converter; it's free, and it's worked fine for me. After installing the
program go to Options and make sure the box to download album art is
unchecked; make sure to select a good quality audio that's stereo; under
Advanced in the dialog, check the box that makes the program compatible with
screen reading software, and make sure Play sound when download finishes is
checked. HTH

Nope, no installation of software. You just plunk in your link, wait a

Hi!

Today is the 50th anniversary of the Beatles tour down under though some
might argue its the 50th Anniversary since the Day Music Died, I'm of the
view that The Beatles were just one big noise the 20th century could have
done without but putting that aside I have to admit that - if you get the
right stuff - some of the recordings made of The Beatles are quite stunning.

I have 2 sets of Beatles material which I refer to whenever I'm feeling
gloomy and must listen to Beatles material, the first is the Masters CD
collection which was released in 1995 or there abouts, there are 18 CD'S in
the set and they come in a mini writing desk type box, yep its made out of
wood and all, cost me $375 at the time but it was well worth the money.

The other set I have is the Masters in high resolution FLAC format, even
better quality than the CD set I mentioned above.

And - if you don't have a CD player or couldn't be bothered to look where to
buy the high resolution FLAC set - then iTunes offers a very good
substitute, the Masters in AAC+ which still sounds acceptable in my lounge
room.

Its unfortunate that there are so many dreadful Beatles recordings out
there - even on CD - so you really have to know what to look for, my guess
is that a lot of company's - 20 years ago - just wanted to get the material
out there, remastered from old tapes and didn't really give a damn about the
quality of the finished product.

hearing about it.
These days I listen to Darkpsy, Forest Psy, and Psycore, and I'd like to
create my own mixes if I had the software. Most of the stuff I have in these
genres is from downloads, not much physical vinyl or CD. I do have quite a
lot on CD in old Techno and Trance from the 90s, but nowadays I don't buy
physical CDs or vinyl if I can get a downloadable version.
I'm an assistant playlist manager for a Psytrance radio station, and if I
could create my own mixes, I could put them up on the station for people to
listen to. I think that would be cool. Anyway, if you find anything, I hope
you will drop me a line.

Thanks.

Subject: blind djs: beatmatching with software, loads of questions

Hi folks,
so, I have been a vinyl dj for about 15 years now, sinse I was a kid!
and I have no intention of putting the decks away, but with the
ammount of great new tracks coming out it's time to get into mp3s I
think.
so, do any of you blind folk know of a decent, accessable, intuative
set up that enables you to beatmatch mp3s as seemlessly as possible?
I'm imagining it's possible that for example the up and down arrows
could be used to control the pitch or they would on my ideal set up.
zulu dj software is the best I've found so far but I can't figure out
the beatmatching though it looks easy!
I am quite a perfectionist, that's what vinyl djing gets you used to
so I can tell off beats a mile off...
if any of you guys dj and would be willing to go through your setup
that would be really great. I mostly play minimal techno, drum and
bass etc so quick fades just won't cut it.
cheers,
Rob

Thanks John, so what CD ripping program out there uses Gracenote? Or what CD
ripping program out there has a service as good as Gracenote? I know it
isn't CDex, because I've tried that one and it isn't as good at knowing what
CDs I tried it with as Winamp was. But if I can't use Winamp to rip CDs
until the end of the year at the earliest, (not if I don't want to have to
name and tag all the tracks by hand that is), then what do people suggest?

Thanks much.

Maybe there's some hope, but not for a while. As a correction to my last

Winamp down last year but at the last minute Radionomy offered to buy it.
They are working on a new release but it won't be ready until at least the
end of the year. In the meantime Gracenote (who provide the tagging service)
have terminated it without notice as the licence has expired. The new owners
will not be using Gracenote. So no tagging until the end of the year at the

I don't know what it's using. I only know that when I ripped three or four
CDs with it, they weren't as well tagged up as they were when Winamp ripped
them. Now that may be because CDex doesn't use Gracenote, or if it does,
then it just doesn't implement the information it gets from Gracenote as
skillfully as Winamp does. Whichever the case, it just isn't as good at
naming and tagging files as Winamp was.

Anybody Here Used the WavePad Sound Editing Software from NCH?

2014-05-12 Thread Evan Reese
Hey folks,
Just wondering because I need something that will remove silence from ends of
audio files. The problem is that they’re AAC files. Audacity says it won’t do
it. WavePad will do it, but in demo mode it won’t save my changes to them. The
price of the software, “without VST plugins support nor SFX Library”, is $50
until May 15. Has anyone here used this? The reason I took a look at it is
because their Switch audio converter is very accessible, and it looks like this
WavePad is also accessible. But for $50 I’m wondering if there’s a better
choice. If anyone knows how WavePad stacks up against similarly priced software
I’d be interested. I know that Sound Forge will also edit AAC files, but I
think that is a bit beyond my price range at the moment.
Thanks for any guidance.

It is usable with reservations but certainly does not come near Goldwave

If you have not purchased this package I would download and test the

Any Home for My Hope for Pandora on My New Windows 7 Machine?

Hi Evan. I recently got a new Win 7 machine to replace my Vista machine
that died; since I've got the Hope program transferred to the new machine
before the old one died, I went to the program and looked for the Options
section; there should be a button that says something like resend my
activation key. I did this, got my key, pasted it in where it needed to go
and Hope is now running on both my Win 7 mechines. You might try running
the program and put in your Pandora login info, then there should be a
dialog with a Resend activation key button; give this a shot. If Hope
support isn't writing back that can really suck. I understand the suthor is
not so nice when people write him with questions, so try what I mentioned
above. Thanks.

Re: Blaze EZ Daisy multi-player with OCR

2014-04-25 Thread Evan Reese
AS someone who has scanned over 500 books for Bookshare, I can tell you that
higher resolution can degrade scan quality. It may seem counterintuitive,
but it's true nonetheless. For example, the default resolution for K1000 is
300 dots per inch. But you can set it to 400 or 600. The scan quality is
often not as good at these higher resolutions. For larger print, the
difference is even more noticeable. Oftentimes, 200 dots per inch is the
optimal resolution for larger print, and there's a substantial degradation
in quality with higher resolutions.
In other words, you don't necessarily want or need the highest resolution
camera you can pack into a device for OCR work.

Re: CD Data And Information

Most of the CDs I've ripped with Winamp are not ones you can find in
mainstream stores, but Winamp was able to find the info for them. Gracenotes
seems to know almost everything I throw at it, even obscure limited edition
electronic music CDs. It's very seldom it doesn't know what a CD is, and I
have a lot of stuff from genres that you won't find in mainstream stores.
Nowadays though, I avoid buying physical CDs whenever I can and simply buy
downloadable versions. I only buy physical CDs when I absolutely have to to
get something I really want.

You don't have to have the Pro version to rip CDs, but there are some
restrictions. First, you can't rip to mp3, but you can rip to m4a, and some
other formats which I forget because I bought the Pro version a while back.
Second, the free version only lets you rip at 8x, whereas the Pro version
lets you rip at unlimited speed.

Switch Is Great

2014-02-02 Thread Evan Reese
Hi Folks,
Well, on the recommendation of two people here yesterday, I went and installed
Switch. It's completely accessible with my Window Eyes 8.4; almost as though it
was written that way, although I don't know that for sure. It's also simple and
fast. There is a five files at a time limit on the free version, but that is
easy to work around. You can select and open many more than five files and then
convert five at a time until you get them all. However, for convenience, and

Yes it does put itself in the context menu. I just checked this with an
audio file, so I'm sure about this.

As to how to find it, just put Switch and NCH software into Google. When I

If you hit the alt key to go into the menus, just before the Open Output
Folder, the first item is Add File(s). Go into that dialogue box and then
tab over to where the folders are with your audio files, CDs or whatever. Go
into whichever folder that has files you want to convert and select them
all. Then tab over to the Open button and hit space on that. The files you
selected will appear in a list just before that Open Output Folder button.
In the free version, if you select more than five files from that list, one
of two things will happen. It will either convert only the first five, or it
will tell you that the free version only does five files at a time, and pop
up a Buy button. Both have happened to me so far. So just select the first
five, and when those are done, select the next five and so on until you've
converted them all. After you've converted all of the files from that list,
make sure you remove them before starting another batch. Just select them
all, go into that menu that begins with Add File(s) and arrow down to Remove
All.

Hey /Tom,
Do you know where the converted files are supposed to go? When I installed
it, they were set by default to go to the Music folder, and I just left it
that way for the present to test it out. But that's in Windows Vista, that
may be different for different operating systems. But you can check on that
by simply tabbing through the buttons without even going into any menus.
Maybe it's converting and you just can't find the converted files. What
happens when you tell it to convert something? For me, it tells me what file
it is working on and the percentages every so often. If it does that for
you, then I would say that it's converting something, but you just may need
to check to see where it's putting the files it converts.

Looking for a New mp3 to m4a Converter

2014-02-01 Thread Evan Reese
Hello,
I've been using the Freemake Audio Converter since March of 2012 with good
results. However lately, it's been having trouble opening multiple files, and
the conversions it makes play in Winamp just fine, but they cause my Book Sense
fits. I have to remove the battery to get it to speak correctly after trying to
play one of these. I've converted several hundred CDs with it and those play in
my Book Sense just fine, but the most recent dozen albums or so are having this
trouble.

Well, I tried an uninstall and reinstall, but that did not go well because
apparently it didn't really uninstall, because when I tried a conversion after
reinstalling it, it remembered the last album I did, and it also remembered
where I told it to store the converted files, which is not where it stores them
if you don't change it. And, needless to say, the files I converted after a
reinstall aren't any better.

So I think I'm gonna have to switch to another converter. I found some on
Google that say they convert mp3 to m4a, but I don't know how accessible they
are. So that's what I'm hoping someone here can help me with.

I'd appreciate any advice. This Freemake Audio Converter is accessible, and a
cinch to run, and I did thousands of files with it, but apparently I've got to
get something else.

Thanks much for any suggestions.

Re: Looking for a New mp3 to m4a Converter

2014-02-01 Thread Evan Reese

Well, the answer to your question is that I cannot detect any difference in
audio quality, and m4a files take up close to half the space of an
equivalent sounding mp3 file. This is important for storage conservation on
the SD cards when playing my music on the Book Sense when I'm not at my
computer. Also, the equalizer in the Book Sense actually has greater
differentiation in its settings for m4a files than it does for mp3 files.
I'm not sure that was intentional, but it's a fact nonetheless. So the music
actually does sound better in m4a on my Book Sense than an mp3 file of the
same thing. I suppose they'll fix that someday, but even if they do, I've
saved a lot of storage space, and money buying SD cards by converting my mp3
files to m4a. So I want to keep doing it.

Hi,

I disagree. M4A sounds better than MP3 at the equivalent bit rate. So a
128KB M4A sounds more like a 192 MP3. MP3 is the worst kind of compression

Re: Looking for a New mp3 to m4a Converter

2014-02-01 Thread Evan Reese

In fairness to Freemake, I should point out that the problems I'm having are
probably not their fault, except perhaps for the non-uninstallation part. I
got this computer in July 2008, and it is certainly possible that errors are
creeping into the registry, and wherever else it keeps files. But I am not
even remotely qualified to determine whether that is true, much less fix
them. It would explain why the program worked perfectly for over a year and
ahalf and several thousand files before starting to malfunction. If the
uninstallation had really worked, any errors of that sort might have been
fixed upon reinstalling. But I guess that isn't gonna happen. I'm not quite
in a position to get a new system, or I'd just do that. Most likely,
installing Freemake on that would work just fine. And I still may when I get
a new system; it never bothered me about purchasing anything. But until
then, I think this summer perhaps, I will try another converter and see if
that works.

Thanks all for the feedback.

Re: Looking for a New mp3 to m4a Converter

2014-02-01 Thread Evan Reese
Interesting. I buy some stuff from Amazon, and I'm not aware of any other
choice than 256-kbps MP3. So I have to use what I get when I buy from them.
Unless I am mistaken, 320-kbps mp3 is also lossless, not so? Most of my
conversions are from that. I was not aware of VBR, so I didn't think to try
it. However, the audio converter I've been using, Freemake, does not support
converting to that in any event. If Switch does, then I can try it out and
see what happens.

As far as the more conversions, the more loss goes, I'm doing one
conversion, usually from 320-bit MP3, sometimes from WAV, and sometimes from
256-bit MP3 when that's the best I can get. The files sound good to me, and
no, I'm not going to rerip all my CDs. I don't buy many these days anyhow.
Most of what I get is downloadable. The roughly 650 CDs I did rip, I used
Winamp and ripped them to the same bit rate M4A as the downloadable files
I've been converting lately, and they sound really good to me. Now if I were
using some really high end equipment and had no need to conserve storage
space, then I wouldn't convert anything, but I don't have any of that, and I
do need to conserve storage space. I'm not sure whether the Book Sense will
play VBR files. I'll have to look into that. If it does, then there's
nothing that says I can't start using that if it really does save more space
than an equivalent sounding M4A file.

Thanks for the info on that.

They sound similar, my real point here is that the more conversion
decoding/encoding that takes place then the more loss of quality results.

Each to their own but the way you've done thing here is not the way I'd done
them.

Firstly I wouldn't have bothered with such high bit rates when intially
converting to MP3, I would have used VBR - after setting the encoding
options properly - that would have given you a much smaller file size thus
you wouldn't have needed to convert anything at all, encoding would have
been far more efficient and loss of quality limited etc.

The other way you could go - if you can still get hold of the source
material you encoded - is to encode directly to FLac and then convert to
AAC/M4A, just making these comments for future reference and I appreciate
that no one wants to rip a whole CD collection again but often its very
worth while, I had everything once in MP3 but now its all FLAC thus I can
convert to any audio format under the planet as often as required without
any loss in quality etc.

2014-01-23 Thread Evan Reese
Thanks Rich, but it looks like mp3 Direct Cut only works with mp3 files,
which these are not. So I'll need to find another solution.

MP3 Direct Cut can directly edit MP3 files and it is much smaller and
simpler to use than Audacity.

minutes! of silence at the end of each track.

I've been told that Audacity can be used to cut off the end of the track
and get rid of the silent part, but I don't know what else I would do
with it other than that. It seems like overkill for me. Is there a
simpler, preferably cheap or free, solution to removing the silence from
these tracks?

Thanks for any advice.

Re: ITunes Player

2013-11-21 Thread Evan Reese

Well, I'm not in a position to be able to use an audio system. My PC and
the headphones I use to listen to music are my audio system. So the only
bass and treble controls I have are in whatever player I use to play music.
Hence my concern with an equalizer.

I do intend to check out iTunes at some point. I've heard many good things
about it, but I'm in no hurry. Unless some new audio format comes along with
content that I really really want to listen to, or I get a new PC with an OS
that doesn't support Winamp, I think I'll stick with it for a while yet.

Itunes certainly has an equaliser though I'm not sure how many bands are
featured.

This is only me but the playing of files and formats and accessibility is
more important to me than equalisers, if worst comes to worst and you're
into that sort of thing then you can adjust bass and treble controls on
your audio system.

Exactly so. It isn't as though Winamp is just going to go poof on December
20. I will find another player eventually, but I expect to be using Winamp
for a while, maybe quite a while, after the updates stop. The bookmarks will
still work, (they are often the same as those for iTunes anyway), the
Gracenotes service will still work, so I can keep ripping CDs. I'm just
going to keep using it until I get a compelling reason to change, such as a
new PC with an OS that doesn't support it, or some new feature that I just
positively must have.

think about it mate, when wibnamp shuts down, no more winamp updates.
You'll just have to keep using the version you have now forever, or until
there's a version of windows that no longer supports winamp, and the next
version won't be out until at least 2015. I'd not upgrade then, until the
bugs are out, so another 4 or 5 years of winamp use shall be yours.

Re: ITunes Player

Yes you can. I don't have iTunes myself, but I've been to sites that have
links to listen to streams that are marked iTunes and (often) Winamp, both
mentioned for the same stream. For example, you can set your Shoutcast
streams to play in iTunes. Sometimes they're mentioned in separate links,
but it's the same address. For instance, The Legend Oldies has a link to
listen in Winamp and another for iTunes, but they're the same stream. I know
because when I click on the link to play the iTunes stream, it plays in
Winamp, and the bookmark is the same address.

Yup, I had forgotten about that because I bought the Pro version quite a
long time ago. You can rip to m4a and a few other formats for free, but the
free version does not allow mp3 ripping. The Pro version cost me $20. Also,
the free version limits ripping to 8x, whereas the Pro version allows
unlimited ripping speed.

Hi,

I didn't catch the original request. I purchased a Y-cable from Radio

last year. It has 2 stereo mail jacks connecting to 1 female stereo jack.
So, I can connect 2 stereo audio sources to my head phones. For example,
I

can connect my Bookport Plus to one side and my pc to the other and listen
to both with my headphones.

Don't know if this is what you are looking for...But, it is an option.

I agree with Ken. Although what you need is a two in one out
mixer. A headphone amplifier most likely will have one input
and two or more outputs.

Your idea of having an adaptor with two inputs and one output
might work, but it could damage one or both pieces of equipment.

The best way is to get a head phone amplifier.
This arangment should only be used for inputs, because
loading in inputs is
way less.

If you turn both of them on and loading the output of one divice will be
ok, bacause it was made for that impedance match.

The other device might not match those phones.

Like I said one output can feed two inputs, The other way where two
outputs feeding the same load is not alwayse going to work.
That's why I sugested the earphone amp. or if you need to have two

The little sampson mixers around $50 are very nice.

Hi Bud,
Thanks for the offer. I found one on Amazon. I had to go through a number of
items, and not all of the cables that have two male jacks and one female
jack work in stereo. Some split a stereo signal into two mono signals. I
wanted to have the stereo option. I finally found one that reviewers say
actually works in stereo for both inputs. We'll see when I get it.

Unable to Rip Tracks with Winamp

2013-05-25 Thread Evan Reese
Hey Guys,

I installed Winamp Pro version 5.622 on my Fiancé's Windows 7 machine running
JAWS 13. It's working pretty well, but something weird happens when we try to
rip a CD. When we hit the Rip button, the CD starts playing. Then, when we hit
the Rip All Tracks button, it brings up an error message saying that it's
unable to rip track 1 because it is unable to find the decoder.

Anybody know what might be going on here and how to fix it? I've got the same
version here on my Vista Home Premium machine using Window Eyes 8.2 and it
works the way it should when I rip a CD.

Thanks for any advice.

A Couple Questions About Freemake Audio Converter

2013-03-14 Thread Evan Reese
Guys, I've installed this Freemake Audio Converter, and done some file
conversions with it. It's (mostly) accessible with my Window Eyes 8.1, and it
does exactly what I want it to do, that is, convert my mp3 files into m4a
files, sounding the same but saving me on storage space. It'll even convert
multiple files at once, so I can convert whole albums at a time. And, it
preserves most of the audio tags. So I like the program overall and I want to
use it. However, I just had a couple of questions:

I can't figure out how to tell it where to put the converted files. That's a
minor annoyance, but the bigger problem is that it is making two of every
converted file. Except for the filenames, of course, they are exactly the same,
making the conversions twice as long and then causing me to have to delete the
duplicates. Anyone seen this and know how to stop it, and does anyone know of a
way to tell it where to put its converted files? There doesn't look to be any
option for that in the menus anywhere.

Thanks much.

I don't use the audio converter but do use the video converter which will
convert only to mp3.

so in the video converter you choose which files you want to convert then
go to the convert menu and select which format you wish to save the files
in. Then a dialog comes up where you can tab to change preset to change
the quality of the file. If you keep tabbing you will come to a button
that just says ... which is three dots. Enter on this to choose where to
save your converted files. in the video converter the only two things in
the dialog after this is a checkbox to import into iTunes and tab once
more to the convert button.

I have no idea why it is putting two copies of the same song together.

Good morning Larry and Listers.

You may or may not know that Winap enables you to time jump the playback
cursor to a specific time point. If you type CTRL+J you will be prompted
to
enter a time. For example, if you want to jump the cursor to 22 minutes
and
35 seconds you would type 22:35 and press Enter. IF you want to jump to
the
2 hour 28 minute mark you would type 148:00. This is because Winamp
appears

to operate in minutes recognition mode as opposed to the hh/mm/ss format.

Alternatively, Winamp also enables time markers to be defined and to move
from one specified time marker to another, very analogous to setting
bookmarks in a digital book audio file. To set a time kmarker you would
type

m, and to go to a preset time marker type alt+shift+M. I hope this helps.
Best regards,
Rob Tabor

When listening to files up to 150 or 160mb in size, At about the halfway

Sure it will. If you can record through a mic using a mic jack, you can
get a cord with a resistor in it from radio shack and use that. You can,
if I remember right, specify the quality of mp3 the machine generates.
You would at worst have to figure a way to cut the tape files into
segments. The real question is should you do this at all. If they're
personal tapes, go for it. But commercial tapes usually don't hold up
well. You have heard the tapes and know what condition they're in, of
course. My wife's commercial tapes were so bad after years that there was
no way I could tune the recorder to get the best sound because there was
no best sound. Personal tapes usually have better quality.

Good luck.
Btw, make sure it's a stereo cable if the recordings are stereo.
Good luck.

Hi Evan, Does your girl friend have a Plextalk? If yes, she can hook it
up to a cassette player, with a patch cord and record the casette to the
flash card of the Plextalk. Then tell the Plextalk to convert that Daisy
recording to CDDA format and it will record this onto a blank disk. She
can then put this disk in her computer and import it. Although the music

start over by completely resetting the equalizer.

Ripping Audio Cassettes

2012-12-02 Thread Evan Reese
Guys, I need to find a method for ripping audio cassettes. I know there are
cassette decks with USB ports on them, but I need to find accessible software
to do the ripping.

I'm getting this as a Christmas present for my sweetheart, who is using JAWS 13
and a Windows 7 machine. Also, if possible, the software should be as
unintimidating as possible for her.

Anyone got any ideas that won't cost an arm and a leg?

Thanks much.

Thanks Dan. I've heard of Soundforge. If I recall correctly, it's a
comprehensive audio program, with a fairly steep learning curve, which would
be intimidating to the person who wants to convert the cassettes, and also
not cheap. Please correct me if I am wrong on any of this.
I haven't heard of Audio Addition. What kind of money are we talking about

Thanks again.

Hi Evan, Does your girl friend have a Plextalk? If yes, she can hook it up
to a cassette player, with a patch cord and record the casette to the
flash card of the Plextalk. Then tell the Plextalk to convert that Daisy
recording to CDDA format and it will record this onto a blank disk. She
can then put this disk in her computer and import it. Although the music
will now be on the computer, she will need to find it and rename each

I recently transferred a slew of music and spoken word cassettes from an
APH talking book cassette player with a wire-like cable with
one-eighth-inch

players were reasonably high quality. Initially there was some guesswork
involved in getting the cassette player volume right, but after that it
went

smoothly.

I used the software application GoldWave to record and edit the files.
GoldWave is free for the first numerous uses, after which there is a price
tag of something like $30 or $40 US. The GoldWave manual is pretty good.
If

Re: JAWS Scripts for Winamp?

2012-10-20 Thread Evan Reese
Hi Rob, this sounds really cool. I need to check it out. The only hitch I
see is that you mention Winamp 5.63, which sounds like the free version. I
bought, and installed, the Pro version 5.622 because it will let her rip
mp3s, which the free version will not. If Ninite will let me install the Pro
version then I will absolutely use it. If not, then unfortunately, as cool
as it sounds, I can't use it for installing Winamp.

Good morning,

Another way to get rid of the Winamp toolbar is to uninstall Winamp then
reinstall it via Ninite, an web-based unintended installer and program
updater. A major advantage of using of Ninite is that it automatically
says

no to toolbars and other unwanted components during its installation
process. Also the Ninite installer is placed on the desktop so you can run
it from there when you are advised that a program update is available.
Many

other programs are available for installation on Ninite including Adobe
Flash, Adobe Reader, and Audacity. The link to access the Ninite installer
for Winamp is http://www.ninite.com/winamp/
From there you can easily find the link to download the Ninite installer
for
Winamp Version 5.63. So have fun using Ninite. Your non-techie friends
will

think you are a genious. smile

Thanks Alex. Well, the problems started during the installation.
Firstly, unlike my Window Eyes, JAWS wouldn't tell me which check
marks were checked in the library section. Hitting the spacebar where
I knew the check marks had to be gave me no response. So I had to take
the default settings. Also, unlike Window Eyes, I didn't get any
chance to uncheck the Winamp toolbar and the 50 free mp3 files and
whatever else is in that final dialogue box. I tried to find them, but
couldn't read anything in there. So I think the Winamp toolbar must be
running. That may be part of the problem, but I don't know how to
uninstall it, or even whether it can be uninstalled without
reinstalling Winamp, which would take me back to the initial problem.
It doesn't read the bookmarks correctly, meaning that when you arrow
down through them, it doesn't just read the titles, but often reads
the urls that go with the titles. So something isn't running properly
with those scripts. I went into the preferences section and made sure
it was on the classic skin, but who knows? The way JAWS reads things
in Winamp, or doesn't as the case may be, I don't know for sure if
it's running the bento skin, which seems to be the default, or the
classic

skin.

Can I get rid of the Winamp toolbar without reinstalling? If so, that
may perhaps help the situation. If not, then I don't know how to
install this thing correctly with JAWS 13 so it runs as accessibly as it

can.

Thanks again.

Re: Problem with Hope for Pandora, No Response from Support

2012-08-31 Thread Evan Reese
Well, she had a version of Hope on her old XP system, but it wasn't
transferred onto the new system by the person that was hired to take care of
all that stuff. That old copy of Hope didn't ask her for login info either.
If she set up an account on Pandora, then it was a long time ago and there's
no way she would recall the username or password she used to set that up.
She tried registering with the new version, but it keeps saying that the
registration failed and that she should try new credentials. I did some
playing around with Pandora years ago before Hope was developed, so I did
have an account already set up; although I have no idea what my username and
password are for that now.

So basically, if I understand correctly, we need to go to Pandora itself and
either recover her old username and password, or create a new account. Then
use those to log into the account. Then Hope will log her in automatically
after that. Do I have that right?

Thanks much.

That sounds very possible. Nevertheless, it would still be nice to get some
kind of response from support after a week. I mean they got her money. Seems
the least they could do if Pandora broke Hope and an update was in the works
would be to acknowledge a letter from a paying customer and just say so.

However, I don't think that is the case this time, because my Hope is

You definitely need to log into Pandora with Hope. If you're not being
prompted, that's probably because Hope remembers your log in
information. If this is a new install of Hope then you will need to log
into Pandora at least once or create a new account. If you're trying to
use the same account information, such as the same user ID, then it will
fail. As you said, try going to the Pandora page to retrieve the log in
information or try to register with a different account name.

Subject: Re: Problem with Hope for Pandora, No Response from Support

Well, she had a version of Hope on her old XP system, but it wasn't
transferred onto the new system by the person that was hired to take
care of all that stuff. That old copy of Hope didn't ask her for login
info either. If she set up an account on Pandora, then it was a long
time ago and there's no way she would recall the username or password
she used to set that up. She tried registering with the new version,
but it keeps saying that the registration failed and that she should
try new credentials. I did some playing around with Pandora years ago
before Hope was developed, so I did have an account already set up;
although I have no idea what my username and password are for that now.

So basically, if I understand correctly, we need to go to Pandora
itself and either recover her old username and password, or create a
new account. Then use those to log into the account. Then Hope will
log her in automatically after that. Do I have that right?

Thanks much.

It would still be nice to know why we can't get a response from the
support address.

Evan

Are you sure you have an already activated account? If not, there is
the register button that helps you create a new account.

Problem with Hope for Pandora, No Response from Support

2012-08-30 Thread Evan Reese
Hey Guys, I helped my girlfriend install Hope on her new Windows 7 PC last
Friday. She paid her $15 and downloaded the program. Then she got the email and
entered the activation code, and the program said that it was activated. The
problem is that now it keeps asking her for her username and password. It won't
run without that. When she bought the program she was never told that she
needed those, much less given them. (I have a copy of Hope as well, but it
doesn't ask me for a username or password. It just logs me in.)

I wrote to the address for support last Friday evening and am still waiting for
a response. I gave them her email address so they would know what account I was
referring to. I have yet to receive a response. Thinking they might have
written her directly instead of me, we have been checking her inbox as well,
but no response there either.

Does anyone here know either how to solve this problem of Hope asking for login
info, or if not, how to get a response from support?

Thanks for any advice.

Evan
