Re: Victor Reader Stream 2nd Generation
As to slow downloading of data, I have noticed with ours, and those of some friends, that it doesn't seem to have a great wi-fi transceiver in it. Even when I'm close to my router, it usually says that reception is poor. Other than that, you are right, a lot of functionality in that little package. Evan -Original Message- From: Dane Trethowan Sent: Monday, May 01, 2017 10:24 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Victor Reader Stream 2nd Generation Hi! I just bought one of these units and would like to make comment on my purchase. Firstly I think that the unit does a brilliant job for what it is in most respects. The sound from the internal speaker is a little muffled however - having already heard a VR Stream - I was already prepared for this, a bit of an annoyance one might say so to overcome this I use a small BUniden hand-held amplified battery speaker I've had for years, cost me $25 about 7 years ago, pity the Stream doesn't have Bluetooth but I guess a product can't have everythint. Now I don't know whether this is my unit in particular but I have noticed that the downloading of data seems to be incredibly slow compared to other devices I have on my network, I used the "Check for Updates" function and - according to that - the firmware is up to date, well at least the data does get downloaded I guess. There's a hell of a lot of functionality packed into the VR Stream box and a lot of this - such as the Internet Radio, podcasts and so forth - I won't bother using - given I already have better solutions for that sort of thing - but for those who don't the VR Stream provides a great entry level to the world of Internet Radio and Podcasting. Getting online with the Vision Australia library was a snap so I downlaoded a couple of books. Again, I have other Apps and so forth which I prefer to use myself but the Stream is convenient for reading, no doubt about that even though I read all my newspapers these days straight from the web site its good to know I have a reliable backup. -- ** "Live each day as if you were goiing to die tomorrow, learn each day as if you were going to live forever"

Re: Portable Am/Fm shortwave weather radio recomandations.
I found several Dejen radios on Amazon for well under $100, but not the D-1103. Nothing for Kido 1103. It's pretty amazing what you can get for less than $100 these days, especially when I consider that I grew up with short wave in the 1970s. Things have come a long way since then.. There are a lot of Shortwave radio sets out there which are blind friendly but the trick to getting a blind friendly shortwave set is to be prepared to learn how to use it. The cheapest around which is an all-round good performer would be the Degen D-1103 sometimes known as the Kido - hope I got the spelling right - 1103, the set has been around a good while and as far as I know is still available for well under $100. The radio covers all the Shortwave bands along with Medium-wave and Long-wave bands, has SSB tuning should you want it and performs well. There are a few tricks to this radio but overall the interface is extremely well laid out. One of the things I like about the radio is the analogue feel to the tuning, yes it has a knob for tuning the radio with the added tester year feel of each band wrapping around. For example you select a band and start tuning using the dial, when you come to the upper or lower end of the band - depending on your thing direction - the radio doesn’t just go to the next band rather it wraps around to the end and continues tuning. The 1103 has a numeric keypad though its a little strange to get used to at first as all the numbers are from left to right. Buttons are easily identifiable, keypad buttons are small round buttons whilst function buttons are rectangle in shape. These radios were being sold by the giant discount Aldi Supermarket chain in Australia up until recently. I have a document which describes how to use the radio and its many functions which I was involved in compiling if anyone would be interested, email me and I’ll send along a copy or - if demand is great enough - I’ll put up a Dropbox link. Re: The Future of Winamp
I mostly agree with this. The chief problem I've had with not having an update to Winamp is that it doesn't know what CDs are anymore, except those newer ones that have their track data embeded in the CD itself. I have gotten some of those recently. But most CDs still come back Unknown when I try to rip them with Winamp. However, now that I've found a CD ripper that usually does know what it's ripping, and that works very well, (EZ CD Audio Converter), not being able to do it with Winamp is not such an issue anymore. So it would be nice to see that someone was behind the program, but it doesn't matter as much to me now as it used to. As long as it keeps working I'll keep using it for what it can do. Re: Looking for An Accessible CD Ripper
One reason for a profile that I can think of is how you want the program to handle track titles. For example, for a single artist CD I don't want the artist's name to appear in the title of every track. However, for a various artists compilation, of which I have quite a lot, I do want the name of the artist to appear in each track title. That's just a small example. There may be other reasons to have profiles, but I can't think of any right off the bat. I had to rip the first one twice because I didn't have the filename and folder settings right the first time. It works fantastically. Thanks for the great help. Re: Looking for An Accessible CD Ripper
Yes, it is indeed from POIKOSOFT. And yes, it is almost completely accessible so far as I can tell with my Window Eyes 8.4. There are a couple of unlabeled buttons, but it's not hard to figure out what they do from hitting them. For example, there's a button to let you browse to where you want it to put the files it rips, but my Window Eyes doesn't say Browse. Also, I can't find any Save button in here anywhere, so I need to check to make sure it still has my settings whenever I open it. You can edit profiles, but I still haven't totally got the hang of how to save them exactly. And when you try to delete a profile, it starts at the top of the list, and not on the profile your cursor is on when you go into the Edit Profile dialogue box. Still, it is working very well overall. Hey thanks for that. I didn't think of looking at NCH Software, even though I have, and really like, their Switch Audio Converter. And it is completely accessible and fast as well. Looking for Speak Recommendations
Hey Guys, I’m using a Windows 7 64-bit laptop with Window Eyes 8.4. I have absolutely no experience with buying these, but I want to get some speakers for my laptop. I don’t have a huge amount of space. I’d like to put them on either side of my laptop if possible. I’m putting them on my Christmas list for my Sweetie, and I don’t want to abuse her generosity. Can I get anything decent, or even half decent, for $100, or maybe not too much above that? I only have one headphone/microphone jack, so I’d like to get USB speakers if I can to keep that jack free for times when I still want to use the headphones. Finally, as I said, I have no experience at all with USB speakers. Can I just plug them into an available port and Windows 7 install an appropriate driver, or do I have to install the driver from a CD? Will I have to worry about accessibility problems with that? Thanks for any recommendations. Evan

How Can I Preserve the Date Created Field When Copying My Albums to Another Computer?
Hello, A few months ago, I got a new Windows 7 64-bit laptop. I’m using Window Eyes 8.4 on it. I copied all the albums I had ripped or downloaded from my old Windows Vista laptop to a hard drive, (since I don’t have a PC transfer cable), and then from the hard drive to my new machine. Unfortunately, all the Date fields, including the one I want to preserve, the Date Created field, were set to the date and time I copied the files. I do sometimes view my albums alphabetically, but most of the time, I like to view them in the order I put them on my system, and I can no longer do that on the new laptop. A friend of mine told me about Robocopy, but the version that was on my Vista laptop didn’t preserve any date fields when we tried copying some of the albums to the hard drive. Then he found a more recent version that is supposed to be able to do that. But I wanted to ask here if anyone knows of an easier way. I’d rather find something more modern, that is more user friendly, something that you don’t have to run from the command prompt and remember various slash options, if I can before installing this, which may not work any better than the one that’s on there now. Of course, it has to be accessible with Window Eyes, which may also limit my options. I really appreciate any help on this. Evan

Nope, no installation of software. You just plunk in your link, wait a minute or so while the video is converted, and then a download link comes up. That's it. Re: blind djs: beatmatching with software, loads of questions
Hey Robert, I can't help you but if you find anything, I'd be interested in hearing about it. These days I listen to Darkpsy, Forest Psy, and Psycore, and I'd like to create my own mixes if I had the software. Most of the stuff I have in these genres is from downloads, not much physical vinyl or CD. I do have quite a lot on CD in old Techno and Trance from the 90s, but nowadays I don't buy physical CDs or vinyl if I can get a downloadable version. I'm an assistant playlist manager for a Psytrance radio station, and if I could create my own mixes, I could put them up on the station for people to listen to. I think that would be cool. Anyway, if you find anything, I hope you will drop me a line. Thanks. Re: Problems With Auto Tagger In Winamp
I don't know what it's using. I only know that when I ripped three or four CDs with it, they weren't as well tagged up as they were when Winamp ripped them. Now that may be because CDex doesn't use Gracenote, or if it does, then it just doesn't implement the information it gets from Gracenote as skillfully as Winamp does. Whichever the case, it just isn't as good at naming and tagging files as Winamp was. Anybody Here Used the WavePad Sound Editing Software from NCH?
Hey folks, Just wondering because I need something that will remove silence from ends of audio files. The problem is that they’re AAC files. Audacity says it won’t do it. WavePad will do it, but in demo mode it won’t save my changes to them. The price of the software, “without VST plugins support nor SFX Library”, is $50 until May 15. Has anyone here used this? The reason I took a look at it is because their Switch audio converter is very accessible, and it looks like this WavePad is also accessible. But for $50 I’m wondering if there’s a better choice. If anyone knows how WavePad stacks up against similarly priced software I’d be interested. I know that Sound Forge will also edit AAC files, but I think that is a bit beyond my price range at the moment. Thanks for any guidance. Evan

Any Home for My Hope for Pandora on My New Windows 7 Machine?
Hey Guys, I have an activated copy of Hope for Pandora on my old Vista machine. I installed it onto my new Windows 7 machine, but apparently I need to activate it before I can use it. I wrote to Support ten days ago but have gotten no response. Do I have to buy the program again to get it to work on this new machine? I kind of resent having to do that, especially from a company that promises support but apparently doesn’t really provide it. Anyone have any ideas as to how I can get my legally purchased copy of Hope to run on my new machine? Thanks much. Evan
Re: Any Home for My Hope for Pandora on My New Windows 7 Machine?
Hi Peter, Unfortunately, there's only stuff about a proxy server, default audio device, and use multimedia controls in the Options dialogue box. There's nothing about resending activation. I'll keep looking. I recently got a new Win 7 machine to replace my Vista machine that died; since I've got the Hope program transferred to the new machine before the old one died, I went to the program and looked for the Options section; there should be a button that says something like resend my activation key. I did this, got my key, pasted it in where it needed to go and Hope is now running on both my Win 7 mechines. You might try running the program and put in your Pandora login info, then there should be a dialog with a Resend activation key button; give this a shot. If Hope support isn't writing back that can really suck. I understand the suthor is not so nice when people write him with questions, so try what I mentioned above. Thanks. Re: Blaze EZ Daisy multi-player with OCR
AS someone who has scanned over 500 books for Bookshare, I can tell you that higher resolution can degrade scan quality. It may seem counterintuitive, but it's true nonetheless. For example, the default resolution for K1000 is 300 dots per inch. But you can set it to 400 or 600. The scan quality is often not as good at these higher resolutions. For larger print, the difference is even more noticeable. Oftentimes, 200 dots per inch is the optimal resolution for larger print, and there's a substantial degradation in quality with higher resolutions. In other words, you don't necessarily want or need the highest resolution camera you can pack into a device for OCR work. Re: CD Data And Information
You don't have to have the Pro version to rip CDs, but there are some restrictions. First, you can't rip to mp3, but you can rip to m4a, and some other formats which I forget because I bought the Pro version a while back. Second, the free version only lets you rip at 8x, whereas the Pro version lets you rip at unlimited speed. Switch Is Great
Hi Folks, Well, on the recommendation of two people here yesterday, I went and installed Switch. It's completely accessible with my Window Eyes 8.4; almost as though it was written that way, although I don't know that for sure. It's also simple and fast. There is a five files at a time limit on the free version, but that is easy to work around. You can select and open many more than five files and then convert five at a time until you get them all. However, for convenience, and because I think they deserve it for writing such a simple and accessible product, I am probably going to buy it. It says that it will also extract audio from DVD's and video files, although I haven't tried this yet. If that works as simply and accessibly as the audio conversions I've done so far, then that will make it even more worth the price. Thanks for putting me onto this. Oh, by the way, Dane, VBR is not on the list of filetypes that Switch will convert to, so I guess I will continue with M4A. Evan
Re: Switch Is Great

Re: Switch Is Great
If you hit the alt key to go into the menus, just before the Open Output Folder, the first item is Add File(s). Go into that dialogue box and then tab over to where the folders are with your audio files, CDs or whatever. Go into whichever folder that has files you want to convert and select them all. Then tab over to the Open button and hit space on that. The files you selected will appear in a list just before that Open Output Folder button. In the free version, if you select more than five files from that list, one of two things will happen. It will either convert only the first five, or it will tell you that the free version only does five files at a time, and pop up a Buy button. Both have happened to me so far. So just select the first five, and when those are done, select the next five and so on until you've converted them all. After you've converted all of the files from that list, make sure you remove them before starting another batch. Just select them all, go into that menu that begins with Add File(s) and arrow down to Remove All. Re: Switch Is Great
Hey /Tom, Do you know where the converted files are supposed to go? When I installed it, they were set by default to go to the Music folder, and I just left it that way for the present to test it out. But that's in Windows Vista, that may be different for different operating systems. But you can check on that by simply tabbing through the buttons without even going into any menus. Maybe it's converting and you just can't find the converted files. What happens when you tell it to convert something? For me, it tells me what file it is working on and the percentages every so often. If it does that for you, then I would say that it's converting something, but you just may need to check to see where it's putting the files it converts. Looking for a New mp3 to m4a Converter
Hello, I've been using the Freemake Audio Converter since March of 2012 with good results. However lately, it's been having trouble opening multiple files, and the conversions it makes play in Winamp just fine, but they cause my Book Sense fits. I have to remove the battery to get it to speak correctly after trying to play one of these. I've converted several hundred CDs with it and those play in my Book Sense just fine, but the most recent dozen albums or so are having this trouble. Well, I tried an uninstall and reinstall, but that did not go well because apparently it didn't really uninstall, because when I tried a conversion after reinstalling it, it remembered the last album I did, and it also remembered where I told it to store the converted files, which is not where it stores them if you don't change it. And, needless to say, the files I converted after a reinstall aren't any better. So I think I'm gonna have to switch to another converter. I found some on Google that say they convert mp3 to m4a, but I don't know how accessible they are. So that's what I'm hoping someone here can help me with. I'd appreciate any advice. This Freemake Audio Converter is accessible, and a cinch to run, and I did thousands of files with it, but apparently I've got to get something else. Thanks much for any suggestions. Evan

Oh, sorry, I forgot to mention that I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium and Window Eyes 8.4. That might make a difference in what someone might suggest. Thanks again. Evan
Re: Looking for a New mp3 to m4a Converter
Well, the answer to your question is that I cannot detect any difference in audio quality, and m4a files take up close to half the space of an equivalent sounding mp3 file. This is important for storage conservation on the SD cards when playing my music on the Book Sense when I'm not at my computer. Also, the equalizer in the Book Sense actually has greater differentiation in its settings for m4a files than it does for mp3 files. I'm not sure that was intentional, but it's a fact nonetheless. So the music actually does sound better in m4a on my Book Sense than an mp3 file of the same thing. I suppose they'll fix that someday, but even if they do, I've saved a lot of storage space, and money buying SD cards by converting my mp3 files to m4a. So I want to keep doing it. Re: Looking for a New mp3 to m4a Converter
In fairness to Freemake, I should point out that the problems I'm having are probably not their fault, except perhaps for the non-uninstallation part. I got this computer in July 2008, and it is certainly possible that errors are creeping into the registry, and wherever else it keeps files. But I am not even remotely qualified to determine whether that is true, much less fix them. It would explain why the program worked perfectly for over a year and ahalf and several thousand files before starting to malfunction. If the uninstallation had really worked, any errors of that sort might have been fixed upon reinstalling. But I guess that isn't gonna happen. I'm not quite in a position to get a new system, or I'd just do that. Most likely, installing Freemake on that would work just fine. And I still may when I get a new system; it never bothered me about purchasing anything. But until then, I think this summer perhaps, I will try another converter and see if that works. Re: Looking for a New mp3 to m4a Converter
Interesting. I buy some stuff from Amazon, and I'm not aware of any other choice than 256-kbps MP3. So I have to use what I get when I buy from them. Unless I am mistaken, 320-kbps mp3 is also lossless, not so? Most of my conversions are from that. I was not aware of VBR, so I didn't think to try it. However, the audio converter I've been using, Freemake, does not support converting to that in any event. If Switch does, then I can try it out and see what happens. As far as the more conversions, the more loss goes, I'm doing one conversion, usually from 320-bit MP3, sometimes from WAV, and sometimes from 256-bit MP3 when that's the best I can get. The files sound good to me, and no, I'm not going to rerip all my CDs. I don't buy many these days anyhow. Most of what I get is downloadable. The roughly 650 CDs I did rip, I used Winamp and ripped them to the same bit rate M4A as the downloadable files I've been converting lately, and they sound really good to me. Now if I were using some really high end equipment and had no need to conserve storage space, then I wouldn't convert anything, but I don't have any of that, and I do need to conserve storage space. I'm not sure whether the Book Sense will play VBR files. I'll have to look into that. If it does, then there's nothing that says I can't start using that if it really does save more space than an equivalent sounding M4A file. Thanks for the info on that. Each to their own but the way you've done thing here is not the way I'd done them. Firstly I wouldn't have bothered with such high bit rates when intially converting to MP3, I would have used VBR - after setting the encoding options properly - that would have given you a much smaller file size thus you wouldn't have needed to convert anything at all, encoding would have been far more efficient and loss of quality limited etc. The other way you could go - if you can still get hold of the source material you encoded - is to encode directly to FLac and then convert to AAC/M4A, just making these comments for future reference and I appreciate that no one wants to rip a whole CD collection again but often its very worth while, I had everything once in MP3 but now its all FLAC thus I can convert to any audio format under the planet as often as required without any loss in quality etc. On 2 Feb 2014, at 10:41 am, Evan Reese ment...@dslextreme.com wrote: Yup, this is true. Removing Silence from the Ends of Audio Files
Hey Guys, I'm downloading albums from a site, (their Creative Commons releases, so it's all legal), but some of the albums have quite a bit of silence at the ends of the tracks. One I got the other day has a bit over two minutes! of silence at the end of each track. I've been told that Audacity can be used to cut off the end of the track and get rid of the silent part, but I don't know what else I would do with it other than that. It seems like overkill for me. Is there a simpler, preferably cheap or free, solution to removing the silence from these tracks? Thanks for any advice. Evan

Re: ITunes Player
Well, I'm not in a position to be able to use an audio system. My PC and the headphones I use to listen to music are my audio system. So the only bass and treble controls I have are in whatever player I use to play music. Hence my concern with an equalizer. I do intend to check out iTunes at some point. I've heard many good things about it, but I'm in no hurry. Exactly so. It isn't as though Winamp is just going to go poof on December 20. I will find another player eventually, but I expect to be using Winamp for a while, maybe quite a while, after the updates stop. The bookmarks will still work, (they are often the same as those for iTunes anyway), the Gracenotes service will still work, so I can keep ripping CDs. Yes you can. I don't have iTunes myself, but I've been to sites that have links to listen to streams that are marked iTunes and (often) Winamp, both mentioned for the same stream. For example, you can set your Shoutcast streams to play in iTunes. Sometimes they're mentioned in separate links, but it's the same address. For instance, The Legend Oldies has a link to listen in Winamp and another for iTunes, but they're the same stream. I know because when I click on the link to play the iTunes stream, it plays in Winamp, and the bookmark is the same address. Yup, I had forgotten about that because I bought the Pro version quite a long time ago. You can rip to m4a and a few other formats for free, but the free version does not allow mp3 ripping. The Pro version cost me $20. Also, the free version limits ripping to 8x, whereas the Pro version allows unlimited ripping speed. Unable to Rip Tracks with Winamp

A Couple Questions About Freemake Audio Converter
Guys, I've installed this Freemake Audio Converter, and done some file conversions with it. It's (mostly) accessible with my Window Eyes 8.1, and it does exactly what I want it to do, that is, convert my mp3 files into m4a files, sounding the same but saving me on storage space. It'll even convert multiple files at once, so I can convert whole albums at a time. And, it preserves most of the audio tags. So I like the program overall and I want to use it. However, I just had a couple of questions: I can't figure out how to tell it where to put the converted files. That's a minor annoyance, but the bigger problem is that it is making two of every converted file. Except for the filenames, of course, they are exactly the same, making the conversions twice as long and then causing me to have to delete the duplicates. Anyone seen this and know how to stop it, and does anyone know of a way to tell it where to put its converted files? There doesn't look to be any option for that in the menus anywhere. Thanks much. This is because Winamp appears to operate in minutes recognition mode as opposed to the hh/mm/ss format. Alternatively, Winamp also enables time markers to be defined and to move from one specified time marker to another, very analogous to setting bookmarks in a digital book audio file. Ripping Audio Cassettes
Guys, I need to find a method for ripping audio cassettes. I know there are cassette decks with USB ports on them, but I need to find accessible software to do the ripping. I'm getting this as a Christmas present for my sweetheart, who is using JAWS 13 and a Windows 7 machine. Also, if possible, the software should be as unintimidating as possible for her. Anyone got any ideas that won't cost an arm and a leg? Thanks much. Evan To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org

Thanks Dan. I've heard of Soundforge. If I recall correctly, it's a comprehensive audio program, with a fairly steep learning curve, which would be intimidating to the person who wants to convert the cassettes, and also not cheap. Please correct me if I am wrong on any of this. I haven't heard of Audio Addition. What kind of money are we talking about for that one? Thanks again. Re: JAWS Scripts for Winamp?
Hi Rob, this sounds really cool. I need to check it out. The only hitch I see is that you mention Winamp 5.63, which sounds like the free version. I bought, and installed, the Pro version 5.622 because it will let her rip mp3s, which the free version will not. If Ninite will let me install the Pro version then I will absolutely use it. If not, then unfortunately, as cool as it sounds, I can't use it for installing Winamp. Thanks again. A major advantage of using of Ninite is that it automatically says no to toolbars and other unwanted components during its installation process. Also the Ninite installer is placed on the desktop so you can run it from there when you are advised that a program update is available. Many other programs are available for installation on Ninite including Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader, and Audacity. The link to access the Ninite installer for Winamp is http://www.ninite.com/winamp/ From there you can easily find the link to download the Ninite installer for Winamp Version 5.63. JAWS Scripts for Winamp?
Hey Guys, I'm helping my partner get her Winamp running and accessible. I am not a JAWS user, (I use Window Eyes and the app that goes with it makes Winamp run very accessibly for what I do with it), but Winamp doesn't seem to be so accessible on her Windows 7 JAWS 13 system. I can't seem to use the control tab to go from the library to the main window and back again, among other problems. What I'd like to know is are there still scripts for Winamp to make it more accessible with JAWS? If so, how can I get them and how do I install them? Or, are they already built in? I know that JAWS does come with some scripts already set up by FS. But if the Winamp scripts are built in, how do I make them run. They don't seem to be running now, or at least not very well. Re: Problem with Hope for Pandora, No Response from Support
Well, she had a version of Hope on her old XP system, but it wasn't transferred onto the new system by the person that was hired to take care of all that stuff. That old copy of Hope didn't ask her for login info either. If she set up an account on Pandora, then it was a long time ago and there's no way she would recall the username or password she used to set that up. She tried registering with the new version, but it keeps saying that the registration failed and that she should try new credentials. I did some playing around with Pandora years ago before Hope was developed, so I did have an account already set up; although I have no idea what my username and password are for that now. So basically, if I understand correctly, we need to go to Pandora itself and either recover her old username and password, or create a new account. Then use those to log into the account. Then Hope will log her in automatically after that. Do I have that right? Thanks much. It would still be nice to know why we can't get a response from the support address. That sounds very possible. Nevertheless, it would still be nice to get some kind of response from support after a week. I mean they got her money. Seems the least they could do if Pandora broke Hope and an update was in the works would be to acknowledge a letter from a paying customer and just say so. However, I don't think that is the case this time, because my Hope is working fine. Problem with Hope for Pandora, No Response from Support
Hey Guys, I helped my girlfriend install Hope on her new Windows 7 PC last Friday. She paid her $15 and downloaded the program. Then she got the email and entered the activation code, and the program said that it was activated. The problem is that now it keeps asking her for her username and password. It won't run without that. When she bought the program she was never told that she needed those, much less given them. (I have a copy of Hope as well, but it doesn't ask me for a username or password. It just logs me in.) I wrote to the address for support last Friday evening and am still waiting for a response. I gave them her email address so they would know what account I was referring to. I have yet to receive a response. Thinking they might have written her directly instead of me, we have been checking her inbox as well, but no response there either. Does anyone here know either how to solve this problem of Hope asking for login info, or if not, how to get a response from support? Thanks for any advice.
