RE: Victor Reader Stream 2nd Generation
Dane: I guess I am missing something, but I have just finished comparing the sound of my VR Stream to the sound of my speaker on my Iphone 6; I fail to hear this "muffleness" that you speak of on the stream! Granted: the Iphone is a bit easier on my ears than the VR Stream! But with the VR Stream (at least is the case with mine) it definitely does seem to have the highs (doesn't really sound muffled to my ear! So the only thing I can conclude is this: it is possible that maybe if someone doesn't have good hearing, maybe this is how the VR Stream's speaker would sound to a person who has a hearing loss? Just listened again...and seem to still be able to hear the "ses" and Fs" on the stream; have the same internet station on; I'll repeat, I find that the Iphone is "easier on the ears"; my guess here is that the VRR Stream's speaker may be smaller in size than the speaker on the Iphone? Yes, the VR Stream is designed with speech in mind that I grant you and I have absolutely no arguement with that but the internal speaker - even by speech standards - is not good, very mid-range yes but lacking top so some people may get confused with say S and F particularly given the fact that TTS is used a lot of the time. Most devices these days - Smart Devices are a case in point - have very clear and chrisp tops that makes listening to music, speech etc very enjoyable and understandable. To prove my point, go listen to a Daisy book on your VR Stream and then - using Voice Dream Reader or something similar - go listen to that book on your iPhone or whatever and you'll soon hear what I'm talking about. Now if you like things that way - speech without a distinct top - then fine! but I think its a great shame that a good speaker is an omission on the VR Strea. Yep I grant you, the quality is far better than that found on the first generation of VR Stream. I've not used a Plextalk Pocket but I have used other Plextalk machines and the speakers in those are absolutely fantastic. RE: Victor Reader Stream 2nd Generation
I've never thought of the Victor Stream's audio as being "muffled"...having said this, I think of it more like the sound of a 6-transistor radio! If you plug it into a good speaker or a good set of headphones, you do get a pretty good sound! But no...if I'm going to listen to any music on that thing, I'd much prefer an external speaker or headphones! RE: Issues with Mic Echo
While I didn't listen to the whole thing, I really heard no echo! Tom Kaufman -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Danny Miles Sent: Thursday, April 20, 2017 3:42 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List <pc-audio@pc-audio.org> Subject: Issues with Mic Echo Hi everyone. Apologies if this post strays off-topic - I believe it's relevant to the list so I've put it here but I guess it might be debatable. I've been setting up to work in audiobook narration and I recently made a demo recording. One of the bits of feedback that I got suggested that there was echo on the recording, even though I deliberately purchased the Fame Mic Reflexion Screen Pro Set to prevent this from happening. Also, despite using a wind screen (pop shield), there are occasional popping sounds. Personally, although I can hear the pops, I can't tell that there is any echo, but this may be because my ears simply aren't finely tuned. I'd be grateful if anyone who has the time and inclination could please listen to the file and tell me whether or not there appears to be echo and how I might be able to correct issues with both the echo and the popping ... bearing in mind that I'm using products to reduce both (perhaps there are positional issues or something else?). Additionally, although I know it's not an audio-related question related to this list, if anyone would be kind enough to give feedback on the quality (or lack of quality) of the narration itself that would also be much appreciated. If anyone is happy to assist, the file can be found at https://www.dropbox.com/s/mjfsty22x0sz1wv/Danny%20Miles%20-%20How%20To%20Exercise.mp3?dl=0 Many thanks in advance for any help. Dean: The standard version of Total Recorder also lets you schedule recordings as well! I have that version; unless they've changed it in later versions of TR, you can schedule recordings! When I bought this version, I think I paid something like eighteen dollars for it. The "pro" version is more; don't remember how much it costs and don't know what the advantages are with the Pro version! The only free one I know is Tapin Radio. You can search for it and install it. Of course, they have a paid version $20 US) which lets you schedule recordings and gives you access to a wider database of stations. Perhaps the free version of total Recorder (totalrecorder.com) allows for recording in real time. Total Recorder Pro lets you schedule recordings. The most powerful one I know is Replay Radio from applian technoloties. It carries an annual subscription cost, but lets you schedule recordings, and also has a way to detect the Url of sites whose Url isn't apparent, so that you can record it. They have a media guide to which they will add sites on request. I'm sure other members can tell you about other options. The Echo Tap is different from the Main Echo and the Echo Dot in that - by default - the Tap doesn't listen for the wake word "Alex" followed by a command, the user must press a button and then speak the commands. With the Hands Free update the monitoring for the wake word "Alexa" can be enabled thus the Tap functions as does the Dot etc though be warned that this function will drain the battery significantly. My suggestion is that you disable Hands Free if you intend to use the Tap a lot on battery and enable it if you're using the Tap through its mains adapter or a power bank. Also note that Tap can be put to sleep with a simple short press of the power button.

Dane: Don't know if you've had a chance to play with those buttons on the top of the tap or not, so you may have figured them out: the button nearest to you (going from front to back) is the volume down; moving toward the back (now this is if you're in the center of the device) is the play/pause button; the button furtherest from you is the volume up button. The button at the extreme left is your "back" button (not sure if they actually call it that) but let's say you're listening to a music shuffle...and you want to go back a song, this is the button you would press. So that leaves the button on the right; this takes you forward through your music. HTH! Oh and you probably have figured out that the button in front (not on the top) this is the button you press when you want to tell Alexa to do something. I haven't seen all the messages on this thread yet, so this may have been already mentioned; I've not actually seen it myself, but I'm hearing that the Tap will eventually have something called "Hands Free" it seems to be a deal where you go into your Alexa App and turn this new feature on and off. At this time, I don't have it, but have heard of others here in this country wo do have it; only thing I can say is that I'm hearing reports that it does drain a little more of the battery! The Tap does sound good; while I won't say it has that big booming base, it's not bad! I've not heard the Echo (what I am told is that the Echo doesn't do stereo (don't know why Amazon did that) but the Tap definitely does give you stereo sound! I'd put it in about the same class as the JBL Flip 2, if you know what those sound like! Have tried a few: Cat Facts, Dog Facts; I've also tried News Briefs (I think Amazon calls these "Flash Briefs" obviously I can't vouch for how any of this stuff works in Australia, but here some of them work okay; some work better than others! I've tried TV Shows and TV Info. I'll tell you that these work better with the main TV networks (CBS, ABC and NBC) if you throw something at it that's a little off the beaten path, it doesn't quite know how to handle that yet! Dane: The Dot can be connected to a stereo, but not the Tap. Firstly a note to anyone in Australia or outside the US or UK who may be thinking of going down the Echo path, is it worth it? Well yep, I reckon it is and even better is the fact that setup requires no hacks or cracks to be applied as was previously the case. Your Echo will still think you’re somewhere else - Mine thinks I’m in Seattle - but I can still get standard time for my local location, this can be set easily in settings, in my case I chose the Australian time zone and the NSW Eastern Time region, works fine! If you’re in Australia then probably one of the best places to get an Amazon Echo is from eBay, they sell for as little as around $100 Australian depending on the model you want. I had my Echo 24 hours after I ordered it, the eBay store I bought from dispatched the item using Australia Post Express Post. The first thing I had to do was to find a wall adapter to make the supplied power supply compatible with our AC mains socket, that done it was just a matter of plugging the supply into the mains and connecting to the Echo, the power lead plugs into the bottom of the Echo and protrudes from the rear of the unit. Echo will say “Hell” and I think she tells you you’re in setup mode so you know you can proceed with the setup which is all done from the Amazon Alexa home page. For those using Echo now and who have it set up the home page is well worth exploring if you haven’t done so already, so much there to tweak and see. Even though I’m in Australia I’ve had little trouble having my Echo recognise the voice commands I’ve issued. There’s a lot I can’t use but a hell of a lot I can, I can use Spotify Premium with Echo however I can’t use Amazon’s Unlimited Music Service. Radio is an oddity I have to admit, I can’t get Echo to tune into many stations using voice commands however I can manually have Echo tune into stations if I use the Tunein interface from the Echo Home Page so go work that one out, if anyone manages to listen to radio 2GB in Sydney Australia with their Echo then I’d be interested to know how you did it with voice commands? The Echo can be paired with an amazon remote controller, has anyone done this? I’m a little disappointed with the Bluetooth facilities offered, yes you can stream to Echo using Bluetooth so that’s nice and handy if you want to use Echo as a speaker for your mobile device etc but I’m surprised that Echo can’t stream the other way - say stream the output using Bluetooth to a pair of Bluetooth headphones etc. To summarise, this purchase was well worth the while for me and I’m sure I’m going to be served well for many years to come, I may even consider buying one of the other Echo models such as the Dot, the Tap can be connected to a stereo or television, is that right? > On 2 Feb 2017, at 2:15 pm, Tom Kaufman <tomca...@comcast.net> wrote: > > II am enjoying mine (I have the one that is known as the Tap) mostly listen > to music on it...but it can do other things like tell you the weather, tell > you a joke (haven't tried that yet) am sure there's lots of things you can > ask her to do! > Tom Kaufman > > -Original Message- > From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Dane > Trethowan > Sent: Wednesday, February 01, 2017 10:05 PM > To: PC Audio Discussion List <pc-audio@pc-audio.org> > Subject: Amazon Echo Alexa > > Hi! > For those of you who have one of these - can’t say what it is again or the > device will get upset when its name is called - then I sincerely hope > you’re enjoying your as I am mine. > Unfortunately Australia isn’t one of the support country’s for the product > yet - I’m in Seattle apparently - so I still need to do a little tweaking. > > ** > Those of a positive and enquiring frame of mind will leave the rest of the > halfwits in this world behind. > > > > ** Those of a positive and enquiring frame of mind will leave the rest of the halfwits in this world behind.

RE: Bit rate settings with Total Recorder
Have a question for Dane: you say you can have TR record and not have the screen reader interfere with anything. I have the standard version of TR, so does the same hold true here? And if so, how is this done? What you're doing at the moment is known as a software recording and this may mean that other audio surces could be heard in the recording itself such as system sounds from your computer or even your Screen Reader. If you Capture the stream as I outlined then the pricess is completely independent of your Sound card thus you can carry on with other activities on your computer, have your Screen Reader ttalk to its hearts content etc. Anyway how you do things is completely up to you but I do suggest you read the primers on Total Recorders web page wich contain some great information on this sort of thing. Total Recorder is an incredibly powerful tool and much of that power is hidden away. What version of Total Recorder are you using by the way? RE: Bit rate settings with Total Recorder
Just a note in case it matters: you don't necessarily have to record and have the file be a WAB file as TR does allow for one to record in the MP3 format, although off the top of my head, I don't remember how you do it as it has been quite a while since I have messed with Total Recorder! Tapin Radio also will record audio streaming, but you probably already know this. I just was not sure if I could be doing this job of recording better. In your message you advised that the BBC were broadcasting at 320 kbps and if I recorded any programme, then TR would simply grab it at the same quality. I often use Tap-in radio or the assessible bbc Iplayer to stream the show, but I'm thinking that perhaps you are telling me to record directly from Internet Explorer rather than Tap-in radio? Am I right? Or is it very much the same thing whither I stream through Tap-in radio, the Accessable BBC Iplayer or Internet explorer. Incidentaly, BBC radio 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 are all termed "Global" stations, thus the 320 kbps. Progress Report Concerning DVD Problem
Hello List: First of all, thanks to those of you who are following this thread (assuming there are people who are doing so) I've not gotten many responses! So this could mean that no one is following.or maybe you're like me and don't really know what to do about this! I have been somewhat able to play this DVD (the one with the show that I was involved with back in November) using Windows Media.with varying results! I can put the DVD in, then go to "computer" go to the D drive; at this point, I hit my applications key and arrow to "open auto-play; then arrow to Windows Media. Usually it'll go ahead and open and start playing the DVD. But the frustrating thing is that, in a lot of cases, at some point as I am watching, it'll just stop! This leaves me with no choice but to back out of everything and start over; sometimes I have been able to get it started; then fast forward to where I left off. The problem with this is with WMP, it takes an eternity to get to where you want to be as I have found no way to just punch in where I left off, such as I can do with Winamp and I assume VLC.which.BTW-I have given up on that one as I have concluded that for whatever reason, VLC just plain won't play these DVDS! Another thing that sometimes will happen is that I'll put the DVD in; Windows Media will come up and start playing the video.with no audio! Other times, I'll get the Windows Media logo.but no video! So you see that there is no consistency here! So I don't know if I have a possible problem with my computer or just what is going on! So again.thanks to all who have been following along; if you have any ideas of what I can do to solve this problem, by all means jump in there and give me your thoughts as I really would love to find an easy way to watch this DVD without all this hassle! If my portable DVD would fully charge, I would just watch it on that! But alas.that portable DVD (for whatever reason) _will_not_charge all the way! So that's another problem I need to figure a way to solve! Again.thanks to all who are reading these posts! Happy New Year to all! Tom Kaufman

Thanks Chris; I actually did look in the VLC preferences, but didn't really see anything that made a lot of sense to me! As for making DVDS (I possibly can settle for just making MP3s if that's what I have to do) but yes; have heard a lot about DVD Audio Extractor. What I really would eventually like to do is to actually make copies of these DVDs that maybe could be shared with people who do have vision! But I will definitely keep DVD Audio Extractor in mind! Thanks again for your response and input! Before I do anything, I need to figure a good way to get these DVDs to play on my computer! Well I don't understand; this file is a piece of music that a friend of mine wanted to c heck out! So I'm not understanding how they got it to play...yet I cannot! All I know to do then is to write to them (they're not necessarily "computer sabby" so if I were to tell them something like "not the right file extension or "this is a "plalist thing"...they'd have no idea of what I mean! The "favorites" _is_ part of the stream! Therefore, you can "favorite" a station right from the stream! RE: accessible software media player that can bookmark
Chris: you're close; in Winamp, you have a deal where you can hit a command (control-J" and put in a specific place to go in a file, thus, if you know (and of course this has to be learned beforehand) and it's no problem, for Winamp has a way were you can look and see where you're at in a file; you hit that "control-J" and it'll take you to the exact spot where you left off! Now Winamp may have a "bookmark" thing too (not exactly sure of how this works) but the method that I have described works well for me! I'm not saying that VLC doesn't do this, but I've yet to figure out how you'd do that with VLC! The RF2200 is available through eBay - that’s where I got mine from - though in varying conditions obviously so - if you plan to embark upon this project - it would be helpful if you can get sighted assistance to look at the photos associated with each available on eBay so you can get an idea of what you may have to do regarding restoration and repair. Hello list: I don't know if I'm having a senior moment or what, but am trying to delete a bookmark in the Winamp player; thing is, when I hit the delete button, it then just starts playing the file! So what is it that I'm doing wrong? Am running Windows 7 and Jaws 17, if that is of any help! Got one more thing I'm going to try and will let you know if that does the trick! Thanks in advance! The radio does not have a keypad for direct entry of frequency's however there are some controls which allow you to step through the bands, you can for example tune with the tuning knob or up/down buttons, the knob can use slow or fast tuning. You can also step through the bands in 1MHZ steps so if you're on 10MHZ you can skip to 11MHZ and so on. The bands wrap around so suppose you get to 20MHZ and press the up button or turn the tuning knob clockwise you'll hear 2 beeps and the radio will start at 10MHZ again. Actually Short Wave - despite the absence of a keypad for direct frequency entry - is a real plus on this radio and amongst the hottest I've seen on a cheap radio such as this across the whole Short Wave spectrum. The radio can be used outside the U.S. thanks to the 9/10KHZ step switch located in the battery compartment. > On 2 Jan 2016, at 3:05 AM, Dave Marthouse <dmartho...@gmail.com> wrote: > > Dane, > > Does this new radio handle single sideband? Sound bars are usually bought proportionally to the size of your TV. for example, if you have a 40 inch TV, you want to buy something closed to the size of the TV. then you have to decide if you want a sub woofer which can be wired or connected with bluetooth. they can be put in a corner or behind an easy chair. I have a Vizzio TV so I bought a Vizzio soundbar so the TV remote controls the soundbar as well. a lot of times if you have a different brand of TV, different than the soundbar you bought, you have to mute the speaker in the television or you get an echo. that is some of the things to consider. -Original Message- From: Joe Paton Sent: Wednesday, December 16, 2015 7:28 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: Sound bar request for information from someone who has one Hi Vicky, Because the sound we like is a personal and subjective, experience, you are really best off, listening before you buy. Tapin Radio Scheduling Problem
Hello list: I've encountered a problem with scheduling programming with Tapin Radio! Most all of the other stations I have tried to set up an event for, there seems to be no problem! However there is one station that (for whatever reason) it will not schedule the event) the station in question is KCBS in San Francisco; it lets me go through all of the steps just fine! However when I get to "Create Task button" I get the message that says "system cannot find the path specified! Can someone please tell me how to make Tapin let me schedule a recording from this station? Thanks! Tom Kaufman

RE: Help With JBL Flip 2 Needed
Just to be clear, I didn't necessarily buy the speakers on account of the possibility that the Victor Stream may one day accommodate Blue Tooth! I was looking for a speaker that would give me good stereo sound...but that was portable; just so happens that these JBLs _are_ Blue Tooth! Will most likely not need that side of the speaker, so am not really concerned with that; I mainly wanted something with good sound and something that wouldn't be too hard to carry, should I want to listen out on my front porch or something! I didn't really think of HumanWare as a place to get speakers; I had been told about this one I ended up buying and they seem to be pretty doggone good, considering the size and all! Again, I'm not having shots but just a pair of speakers would have been for the purposes of the Victor Reader Stream, if one day - by chance - Humans Beware came out with a Bluetooth model then look at the option then as there will be a whole new set of Bluetooth gadgets around if and when that day ever arrives. I even tried pressing the n as in nancy keyit stops. Can someone help, if you don't mind, please? You have wasted a lot of time going off on tangents. I strongly recommend that you read the following and make sure that you understand what you are being told. Put your DVD in the drive. Start VLC player. Use Control+D to bring up the disk dialogue. Tab through this dialogue and make sure that the DVD appears in the field that indicates the disk that will be opened. If your target DVD is not in that field because you have more than one DVD drive then use the browse button to move to the correct drive. Once you have verified that you have the correct disk selected, use the shift+tab button to go back to the play button. Press space on the play button and after 10 to 30 seconds (depending on the preference of the DVD manufacturer), the DVD will begin to play. To play or pause the DVD use the space bar. Use P only if you want to start playback from the very beginning. The playback menu can be reached by Alt+L . In the playback menu you will find: Title - which will tell you the length of the titles on the DVD Chapter - which tells you about the chapters of the selected title Program which will probably show as being unavailable Speed Custom bookmarks Jump forward (see the keyboard shortcuts below) Jump backward See below Jump to specific time see below Previous title Next title Previous Chapter Next Chapter Play Stop Previous Next Record So, to do what you say you want to do in your original message, press space to make sure your DVD is playing, press space again to pause playback then use Alt+l to go to the playback menu then go down to the next title and press enter. Wait for a few seconds for the program to adjust and then press space to resume playback. The following shortcut keys can be used rather than the jump item in the playback menu: Shift+Arrow Left/Arrow Right Very short jump (3 seconds) Alt+Arrow Left/Arrow Right Short jump (10 seconds) Ctrl+Arrow Left/Arrow Right Medium jump (1 minute) Ctrl+Alt+Arrow Left/Arrow Right Long jump When you are finished, control+q will close VLC. Do not use the X or N keys in VLC or you will have unexpected consequences. There is no need for you to use the pass next key function of your screen reader for any command in VLC.

I use a little headphone amplifier made by a company called Headroom. It takes 4 AAA batteries. What I like about it is that it has a high and low impedence switch so it caters for all kinds of headphones. You get a short cable with it which allows you to connect your mp3 device or whatever to the 3.5 mm input of the amplifier. It also has a usb socket so you can use it as a sound card also. I think it was called the Egghead or something like that. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Mary Otten Sent: 21 May 2015 05:50 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: improving headphone sound with a portable amp? Hi all, Several years ago, I purchased a pair of AKG Q701 headphones for use with a home stereo. These are, in my opinion, outstanding phones, especially considering the price is around $200 or a bit more on Amazon. They are wonderfully comfortable to wear for extended periods of time, more so than any other phones I've seen, bar none. Recent reviews indicate some dissatisfaction, since these are now apparently being made in China, rather than Austria, the home country of AKG. But that's not the point of this message. I have tried my Q701 with the headphone output of my iPhone and find the output of the phone isn't sufficient to drive the Qs well. So I looked into the possibility of a portable headphone amp, such as the fiio e12, which has pretty decent reviews on Amazon. It is not clear to me, however, how you get the signal from the lightning port on the phone to the little amp, as it doesn't seem to come with a cable. You can purchase a separate LOD from fiio, but it has the old style 30-pin connector. You could then purchase an official Apple lightning adapter at some ridiculously inflated price, of course, and then I suppose the set up would work, although I don't think this amp has a DAC, and I'm not sure if you'd need one of those anyway. So, the question. What are folks doing who have head phones which are not driven adequately by the crummy output stages found in portable devices like phones etc? Mary
