The Battery in my NLS player is down to around 8 hours, now. I don't know why they can't solve the battery life issue. At 10:07 AM 5/4/2017, you wrote: I read quite a lot and while at home, in my opinion, nothing beats the NLS player, with its good sound, long-lasting battery, although the battery life, that begins at 40 hours, slowly degrades to about 16 with prolonged use. The Iphone of course, is also excellent for listening to BARD books, but with so many other apps on the Iphone and now with unlimited data, plus texting and the telephone itself, I prefer to also take the Milestone 312 for the books. The problem is that we are slowly becoming pack horses, when you take into consideration that when travelling, I normally take my Iphone, Milestone, Olympus, ORCAM, laptop and CPap machine. Everything could be improved of course. The NLS players could solve the battery-life issue plus add Bluetooth capability; the Milestone could add Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and an antenna for the FM radio, for now it uses the wire of the headphones as antenna; the ORCAM should be able to save the text it scans, etc. Regards, Humberto -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Hamit Campos Sent: Thursday, May 4, 2017 7:33 AM To: PC Audio Discussion ListSubject: Re: Victor Reader Stream 2nd Generation Cool. RE: Program for general recording on the PC needed.
Rob, the problem I see is that an external synth will not work for other audio. Or, perhaps, I don't know how to make an external synth play other audio. earlier, Rob Tabor, wrote: Good morning Dave and list members, An external synth is certainly a workable solution to your recording dilemma. However, if you go that route I would advise you to use your sound card to run JAWS and use the external synth for other audio for the simple reason that if you lose speech it will be much easier to rule out hardware failure as a cause. For example, if you hear Windows system warning sounds you will be able to rule out hardware failure if you have JAWS configured to run on the system's internal soundcard. Conversely, it will be much harder to rule out hardware failure if JAWS is configured to run on the plugin speech box. It's just a thought to ponder and I hope it helps. Yes.A usb sound card for speech is a good idea. You can even get usb digital speakers that are fine with Jaws such as the Palo Alto Audio Design Musik Digital Multimedia Speakers for arounf $50. Or a usb sound bar for laptops. Be sure it acts as a sound card as well as drawing power from usb. This is the simplest solution I've found. Re: mixer?
Geoff, thanks for the explanation. Now, I know why I'm having volume problems. earlier, Geoff Eden, wrote: Okay, here we go. Both your sound card and your triple talk have similar small chip amplifiers that are, essentially, current pumps. When you put two of them pumping to the same output, electronically speaking, they see each other and the impedance, (resistance) of the circuit changes significantly for both amplifiers and their output will change accordingly. As two things are never exactly the same, one will tend to dominate and the other be suppressed. The solution is to isolate the two audio output streams. If you don't, eventually you risk burning out one of the amplifier chips. If you have the skill you could create a small circuit board and isolate the two output circuits from each other with, probably 10K resistors. If you don't have the skill, then purchase a very low-cost mixer and put both channels into it and feed a small amplifier. Some mixers actually come with an earphone amplifier built into them. I can't make a recommendation, as the mixer I own is overkill and costs about $200. I would bet with a little hunting you can find something for less than 50. Perhaps somebody here on the list can make a mixer recommendation. Jeff -Original Message- From: john schwery Sent: Tuesday, November 20, 2012 9:29 AM To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Subject: mixer? On my NLS cartridge, and on the USB memory stick I used to use with my DTBM, I found I had to place my MP3's in the Audio+Podcasts so I could move from MP3 file to file on the DTBM. Also, as I said in a previous note, your BARD books can go in any directory, as long as you have one book per directory. Looks like the advice I got on using the $DTB folder came from a Victor Stream user. Here's what it says on the BARD Talk FAQ at http://www.bardtalk.com/faq.php: 12. Can I move a thumb drive with NLS books between my third party reading device and my DTB player and have it work with both? Answer: Yes. The NLS dtbm will locate any NLS books on your thumb drive regardless of the folder names in which they are placed. If your third party reading device requires the NLS books to be in a certain folder, you should place them branching off that folder if you plan to listen to them using both the dtbm and your third party reader. For example, if your third party reader is a Victor Reader Stream, you would place the NLS books in subfolders below $VRDTB on your thumb drive so you could listen to them on both the NLS dtbm and your Stream. Remember that bookmarks including your current reading position are stored on the individual device and will not transfer when you switch the media between reading devices. 13. Where do I put MP3 files I want to listen to on my DTB player? Answer: Create a folder on your thumb drive or a writable cartridge called: audio+podcasts. Note, when creating this folder, use the + sign between audio and podcasts. Additional folders may be created under that main folder. Mp3 files will be played sequentially based on their file names. the NLS dtbm will not announce the names of the files because it does not have a built in text to speech engine. -- Christopher chalt...@gmail.com On 4/30/2010 8:24 AM, DJ DOCTOR P wrote: Hello Chris and Ike, On one cartridge, I have all of my books in indevidgeual folders that bares their names. I have a $dtb folder on my cartridge because I let the Humanware Companion transfer my books. I also have an audio+podcasts folder on that cartridge and have no trouble. earlier, Christopher Chaltain, wrote: Well, I'm not sure what to say. I don't recall seeing any instructions that involve a $DTB folder on the NLS player. If I saw any such instructions, I either assumed the person knew what they were talking about, were talking about another player (such as the Victor Stream, which I don't have) or I just didn't pay too much attention since it was already working for me. BTW, I don't know that using a $DTB folder doesn't work. If you want to try what works for me you can. Otherwise, maybe someone else can help you. As I said before, I don't use a $DTB folder. Both on my blank NLS cartridge and my USB flash drive, I extract my BARD books directly into their root directories. This means I get one folder per book, and these folders are in the root directory. I also have an Audio+Podcasts folder in the root directory. I drop my MP3's into this folder. I have a standard player, so when I hold down the play/pause key I end up in my bookshelf, and I can use my forward and rewind keys to select the user's guide, any of the books I have and Audio Files. It sounds like you have the advanced player, so you can get to the user's guide with the info key. If I select the Audio Files entry in my book shelf, I hear the first MP3 start to play. Now I can use the forward and rewind buttons to move through that MP3 file and jump to the next file in the folder. Like I said this works for me. I too am following instructions I got from another list, plus a little bit of trial and error. -- Christopher chalt...@gmail.com -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Dave McElroy WA6BEF Sent: Friday, April 02, 2010 2:01 PM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: Revisiting nls digital player I was following the inscructions from this list. To get to the users guide on my machine, I must hold down the info key and it toggles into it. For my DTBM from NLS, I extract each book I download from BARD into it's own folder in the root directory on the USB flash drive or blank NLS cartridge. Any MP3's go in the Audio+Podcasts folder, which is also in the root of the flash drive or Audio+NLS cartridge. Now when I hold down the play/pause key and go into the Bookshelf, I can go to any of the books I've downloaded, the user's guide or the Audio+Podcasts folder, which shows up as a single book. Each MP3 in that folder is like a different chapter in that book. I do not have a $DTB folder anywhere, which is why I'm thinking we may be talking about two different things and why I'm a bit confused. -- Christopher chalt...@gmail.com -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Dave McElroy WA6BEF Sent: Friday, April 02, 2010 12:42 PM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: Revisiting nls digital player Hmmm. rar files?
I have been using WinZip pro for rar files. Today, when extracting a 5 part archive, WinZip had some problems. I looked at the error window but I didn't see those problems. Is there a free program that handles rar files better than WinZip? If so, what is it and where do I get it? Thanks. Re: College sports via Internet radio?
I get the Iowa Hawkeyes via cstv for $50 per year. This includes any sports broadcasted on their radio network. earlier, Mike Pietruk, wrote: Dean This is now very much a mixed bag. Yahoo College Sports continues to offer its subscription package though the number of schools included is diminishing. Also part of the package are a number of schools offering their feeds for free on the Yahoo website. Schools that are free include Florida, Tennessee, TCU, Texas, Richmond, Arizona, Middle Tennessee, North Carolina State, and Kentucky. To see a 7-day schedule, visit http://sports.yahoo.com/top/collegebroadcast CSTV also continues to also offer a subscription package which, at the moment, I am not all that familiar with. A number of teams stream via over-the-air stations. Examples that immediately come to mind are Michigan State wvia WJR Detroit; Miami via WQAM Miami; Florida State via WBOB Jacksonville; Florida via a number of stations including WWJB Brooksville and WFXJ Jacksonville; northwestern via WGN Chicago, and so on. Hope others can expand on this answer and if you, Dean, get a number of replies perhaps you can summarize your findings via a post here and in a Top Tech Tidbits item. This is truly weird. I was listening this afternoon to the White Sox-Angels game on Gameday Audio using Firefox. I was in the start menu and accidentally hit a l and was suddenly logged off. The pc has only one user account. I returned but thereafter, despite subsequent reboots and shutdowns, was unable to successfully click station links in Gameday Audio using either Firefox or IE6. Everything else, both on the mlb.com site and elsewhere, is working fine. Even the MLB Minor League Audio links work fine. And everything on the multimedia page, except for the station links, works as expected. So here is what happens when using each of the browsers and attempting to click on WGN for the Cubs game or, earlier today, WSCR for the White Sox game. And for any other station, for that matter. In Firefox, nothing happens when clicking on a station link. If I hit ctrl+n, I am returned to my Firefox Homepage. In IE6 if I hit the return key on the link, , I am returned to the same page with the link count slightly varied. Same goes with ctrl+n. This definitely is not a Silverlight issue as I confirmed that it is successfully installed. All other audio works flawlessly including the MLB's minor league game site. I checked another pc and Gameday works fine there. Any ideas anyone. can't get games on game day audio
I can no longer listen to games on the MLB, Game Day Audio. This problem started last Saturday. I installed Silver Light, hoping that would solve the problem. I did a Windows repair, but didn't help. After clicking on a radio station, the game will not load. Sometimes, I get the log on screen and sometimes not. I usually get lines like, waiting on mlb.mlb.com, read gdx.mlb.com and some others. Refreshing the page doesn't help. I have tried closing the player window and clicking the station again. I called MLB support and they don't know the answer. The games come in on my wife's pc but not mine. I have tried both Fire Fox and Explorer. WE have a dsl connection and Belkin router. My connection is wired and my wife's, wireless. I'm running XP home and my wife, XP Pro. Any ideas for help? John -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. Mike, I don't understand how your link works. I saved one that you posted earlier. When I go to that link in Fire Fox, I get the games for March 23. earlier, Mike Pietruk, wrote: Patrick One suggestion which I have used for as long as I can remember. can't listen to games on game day audio
I can't get any games on game day audio. After clicking on a station link, the media window seems to load partially and sit there. It says either transferring data from mlb.mlb.com or something about gdx.mlb.com. It doesn't load far enough for me to log in. It doesn't work in either ie or fire fox. Any ideas as how to fix this? Re: recording with cdex.
Just a couple of notes. Wen entering an email address, you may enter any address, even a phony or old one. When ripping tracks from a cd, by default all tracks are selected. earlier, Kenneth Suratt, wrote: CDex Version 1.51 This is a great little program that can do several things, plus, it is very easy to use. Another good plus to this program is that you need no scripts or anything to make it work with Jaws for Windows. You can use the program to rip music files from a CD, convert existing sound files to MP3 files, and record audio from an external device through your line in jack on the back of your system. You will find step by step instructions on how to do all of the following, plus how to set the program up after installing it below. If you haven't yet downloaded the program and installed it on your system, then just hit enter on the following link to download Cdex 1.51. How to for Cdex 1.51 Setting up the program for the first time Selecting a bit rate for ripping Creating a file format for ripping Ripping music files from a CD Selecting multi files from a CD Selecting all files from a CD Converting wav files to MP3 or MP3 files to Wav Recording from a external device Setting up the program for the first time There are a few settings that must be set once the program is installed. Follow the below steps to set the program up and get it ready to use. 1. Start the program and hit F4 to open the Cdex configuration dialog box. 2. By default you are on the encoder tab. Control tab until you hear, remote CDDB tab. 3. Tab once and you should hear, your email address: edit. Enter your email address. 4. Tab about four times until you hear, auto connect to remote CDDB checkbox not checked. Hit the space bar to check the checkbox. 5. Now control tab until you hear, file names tab. 6. You should be automatically put in the file name format edit box. This is where you can choose how your file name is created using things like artist name, album name, track number and etc. If you plan on ripping Music from a CD, then this is where you tell Cdex how you want your file names created. Below is what each %Number stands for and some examples. You can either leave it the way it is with the default setting, use one of the examples, or create your own. Here is what each %Number stands for: %1, artist name %2, Album name %3, track # %4, track name (song title) %5, CD volume ID %6, CDDB ID %7, track # leading 0 %8, total # of tracks %Y, album year %G, genre \, can be used to specify folder directories Some Examples using the above items: %1\%2\%7-%4 (default), creates the following output, Artist folder\Album folder\track # starting with 0-track name.wav or MP3. %1\%2\%4 creates the following output, Artist folder\Album folder\Track name.wav or MP3. %1-%2-%3 creates the following output file name, Artist name-Album name-track #.wav or MP3. %1\%1-%4 creates the following output, artist folder\Artist name-track name.wav or MP3. 7. Tab two times and you will be in an edit box with a directory. This is the directory where your wav and MP3 files will be saved. To change the directory just hit enter on the directory name and it will bring up a computer tree view. Use your up and down arrows to navigate the tree view, and the right and left arrows to open folders. Once you are where you want wav files to be saved, tab to the okay button and hit enter. 8. Tab one time and you will be in an edit box that displays the directory where recorded files will be saved. To change the directory just hit enter on the directory name and it will bring up a computer tree view so you can select where you want recorded files to be saved. Once you have chosen the directory, just tab to the okay button and hit enter. 9. Your done setting up the program. Just tab to the OK button and hit enter. Selecting a bit rate for ripping The bit rate is the quality at which you will rip the songs from the CD. The default bit rate is 128, but you can select any bit rate between 32 kbs and 320 kbs. For ripping audio tracks from a CD, I would recommend 128 kbs or above. Most people use anywhere from 128 kbs to 192 kbs. To change the bit rate for ripping, do the following: 1. Open the CDex program. 2. Hit f4 to bring up the configuration dialog box. 3. You should land in the encoder page, but if not hit control tab until you are in the encoder page. 4. Tab four to five times until you hear, bit rate combo box 128 kbs. 5. Now you can arrow up and down to change the bit rate to whatever you like. 6. Tab to the OK button and hit the space bar. Your done! mp3sparks, previewing full album?
On all of mp3, I used to be able to preview a full album. On mp3sparks, the player window appears, and just sits there, trying to transfer data. Has anyone gotten the preview to work on mp3sparks? Can't tell you anything about formats yet. Given amazon's record on good accessibility, it will likely be very easy to use so sounds promising. Regards. I used to use that site but I can no longer connect to it. The connection keeps timing out. RE: List Name In Subject Line
Someone asked why the words pc audio are extra verbiage, when one considers if all lists would have the name in the subject line, it adds up. Keep the names out of subject lines and learn to filter messages. earlier, Steve Pattison, wrote: I completely agree with Jonathan. I definitely wouldn't want the name of this list in the subject line! At 09:20 PM 31/05/2007, you wrote: Oh please God, no! Re: comprehensive mp3music site?
Cornell, is that f for search a JFW command? I use Window Eyes. earlier, Cornell Ligon, wrote: HI John, When you go to their homepage, just hit f for the search box and type in your inquiry. With that said, once the page loads with options according to your search, its probably easiest to hit the letter h for headings until you get to the list of music files, artists or whatever. Its relatively easy to use, but a bit much to go through until you get through their format. You can also search music according to genre, decades, album, artist and etc HTH. P.S. All their files once purchased are yours to do whatever you want and their all recorded in 320 kbs, which is supposedly cd quality. You can burn, transfer or whatever how many times you like, and if for whatever reason the music files are lost, they keep a history of all your music downloaded so you can reretrieve the tracks. You dont have to join to listen to files, but it may be worth to take advantage of the free trial period. Their files are the easiest to use via computer and screenreader than any other site Ive been to, but because they have such a large selection, mostly independents, it can be a bit much to navigate through until you get more acclimated to using the site.
