Some wide angle distortion that I'd probably try to get rid of or tone

Okay. Quite frankly, until you reminded me, I forgot it could be called
a spiral staircase. It is, after all, only one level and I tend to think
of spiral staircases as being more than one level.
The spiral is supposed to be one of the more common shapes in nature.

Re: Backstory, I probably should have added that the island became a
major Naval Station during WWII. My friend and I drove seaward side,
lots of crumbling barracks. But hard to navigate, closed streets, etc.
