Thanks, Alan.

Yes, the Blue Mountains is dominated by Eucs and the volatile oil in

We're on the plains on the eastern side of the mountains and are less

Bracket suggestion

2013-10-21 Thread CollinB
Periodically I have to go out in the field (to the tear-down area) and do a
quick shot of a transmission case.
But using an on-camera flash just doesn't cut it. Not enough light for good
dof and, worse yet, straight-on reflects some of those flat edges too bright
for a consistent exposure.
I'm thinking what I'd like is some sort of bracket that would allow me 2
slaves, to the right and left about a foot, with diffusers attached.
As far as flashes I'll probably go with some punch, like some old Sunpak 611
units with diffusers attached. But perhaps 2 decent shoe-mounts will do
fine as well.
But a bracket for holding two of them is tough to locate.
Thoughts? Suggestions?

Are you shooting with a K-5 or K-5 II? If so, you can go to ISO 1600 without

want to complicate the rig.

Thanks, Dan.

I really wish I could get down to the other wildlife preserve this time
of year. The lakes there are really beautiful at times, with lots of
cypress trees jutting out of them. It's really too bad that they close
the place down during the fall and winter months, but it stays flooded
throughout most of that time of year, so I figure they don't have much
choice. They'd be dragging people out of there every other day if they
didn't.

Re: Bracket suggestion

2013-10-21 Thread Stan Halpin
Must you have the flashes attached to the camera? If you use the pop-up as a
wireless controller, then put one or two or however many flash heads you need
around your subject positioned as needed. E.g., put a couple of flashes on
light stands to either side of your tripod.

Or, assuming you are using a tripod, just use long exposures, f11 or f16 for
DOF. Take two or three shots if needed for extra DOF, then stack them in
Helicon Focus or similar.

Thanks, Bob.

I see exactly what you're talking about, now. Unfortunately, when I try

makes the horizon look even more off-kilter to my eye.

Must you have the flashes attached to the camera? If you use the pop-up as
a wireless controller, then put one or two or however many flash heads you
need around your subject positioned as needed. E.g., put a couple of
flashes on light stands to either side of your tripod.

Or, assuming you are using a tripod, just use long exposures, f11 or f16
for DOF. Take two or three shots if needed for extra DOF, then stack them
in Helicon Focus or similar.

The idea of stands would be good except that this is a rather unstructured
area and I end up shooting the units wherever they are at the moment.

Thanks for the input.

For an on-camera bracket in your situation, you don't need elegant or

Walt,

I guess I've got things around me intense enough so that I
don't need everything to be as saturated. ;-)
But you do as you do, - that's your vision of the world.

Yep, - I think the vertical (and horizon) is proper now.
The slope of the land is not a problem. The axis of the symmetry is
now horizontal.

I see that the crop at the top and at the bottom (around the tallest
group of trees in the middle) became tighter now.
While it might be the result of the tilt, - but it seems to me
you would have more space along both edges remaining.
I would let a bit more air there.

Best,

Igor

Pentax K-01 follow-up? (or other Pentax K-mount mirrorless)

2013-10-21 Thread Ciprian Dorin Craciun
(For the meat of the subject you could skip directly to the
paragraph THE DILEMMA. Below I add some context to it.)

As I've mentioned yesterday in the thread Which camera brand
would you choose, if you started from scratch? I currently own a
new-ish Pentax K-30 and an old FujiFilm FinePix S5600 / S5200.

Although the K-30 serves me well, it fails to completely replace
my Fuji S5600 for a simple reason: it's too large and heavy to easily
fit into my laptop backpack (especially when I travel without
photography in mind). (Even the Fuji is at the limit, however I
managed to log it with me almost every day in the last few years, and
everywhere I traveled.)

Thus I'm looking for a portable replacement for the Fuji. I've
looked at m4:3 (Olympus and Panasonic), Pentax Q, the Ricoh GR / GXR,
Fuji, both fixed and interchangeable lenses, etc. I've even looked at
point-and-shoot from various manufacturers, (including Pentax,
Olympus, Nikon and Cannon) which I've disregarded due either lack of
manual control or too small sensors.

All (except the PS) were nice and compact replacements, however
they all failed to beat the Pentax-K01 in two respects: they are more
costly (at least in my country), and they don't take K-mount lenses of
which I already have two.

== THE DILEMMA ==

Therefore my question (or questions) is: is there any chance that
a K-mount mirrorless will appear in the near future (i.e. 6 months
till it hits the shelf)? Or should I buy the K-01 while it's still
available in stock (I know it's out of production)?

Or have I missed something which advises against the K-01? (I
must note that I haven't read too many reviews...)

Feedback is much appreciated,
Ciprian.

For an on-camera bracket in your situation, you don't need elegant or
multi-purpose. So go to Ace Hardware, buy a strip of aluminum. Drill a hole
through which you'll attach the strip to the camera with a 1/4x20 bolt,
another couple of holes on the two ends to mount the flash heads. Done.
Unless you want a fourth hole for mounting a short dowel to use as a handle.

You might want to incorporate some sort of anti rotation feature as I can see
the entire bracket rotating around the attaching screw on the camera. Also be
careful about the length of the attracting screw as too long a screw can easily
damage the camera.

Heya Jostein,

I live about 40 minutes south of SFO by the main road (Hwy 101) in Santa
Clara. Depending the specifics of whom else might want to get together in
this area, I will arrange time to meet when you're in the area here. I'll
send you my mobile phone number so we can coordinate better.

Re: PESO: Lake on an Early Autumn Day

2013-10-21 Thread Walt Gilbert
I'd have to change the crop to a non-standard aspect ratio, but I could
get a little bit more.

Still, the horizon-corrected version leaves the image more unbalanced to
my eye -- to the point of physically tilting my head to the right.

Nevertheless, I do appreciate the suggestions. It'll give me food for
thought the next time I set up shots of that type -- and maybe even
cause me to consult the electronic level on the K-5!

As for the colors, I guess that's just a quirk of mine. I've always

However, two things disturb my eyes:
1. The (infamous) horizon, or rather vertical in this case is a bit
tilted CW: you can see that the subject and its reflection are not
on the
same vertical line.
It is a small amount but sufficient for the eye to catch.

2. I don't know how it is on your screen, but on mine it seems
to be slightly oversaturated (or the contrast is too high).

  Have a think.

I think the wisest advice that I've seen about giving a critique comes from
the incomparable David Hurn in the book On Looking At Photographs. If you
can find a copy, buy it - right after you've bought the even better On
Being a Photographer.

The other side of this is probably a useful guide on how to seek advice or
criticism in such a way that you can make use of it, and not just have your
ego destroyed unnecessarily.

There's too much for me to type out as a quote, but here is some of what he
says.

[...] you will be asked to comment on a photographer's work. So what do you
say?

[...] the honest answer is [...] I will happily look at your photographs
[...] do not expect me to comment because I do not know you or your
concerns. When finished, say thankyou, with a smile.

If you are expected to give more [...] ask a lot of questions When/where
was this taken? what do you intend to do with the photographs now that you
have made them and so on.

[...]

Understand that whether or not you like the pictures is unhelpful and
irrelevant. Gauge the photographer's intent in making them [...] it might
require a question or two. There will be a discrepancy between the
photographs and the ideal images for the stated purpose. Offer guidance and
advice on how to get from _here_ to _there_. The advice might be technical
or concern issues of presentation or suggestions regarding publication /
exhibition. In this way your remarks will be practical, useful and relevant.

[...]

helping a photographer to achieve his / her goals is not a therapy session
between the ignorant. [...] avoid giving opinions based on _your_
prejudices, emotions or past history. These are not germane to the pictures
or relevant to anyone but yourself.

I'm no stranger to snowy roads. I've looked briefly into buying snow chains,
and got the impression that cheap ones would be easier to find in towns
closer to the Sierras. I have a set for my own car that goes on and off in a
couple of minutes, and will try to find something with a similar patent.

What worries me more is actually that some of the most interesting roads
close for the winter at some point around the time I get there. I've been
unable to find any fixed dates for closures, so I guess it depends on local
weather conditions. Fingers crossed... :-)

Re: Gearing up for California

2013-10-21 Thread Alunfoto - Jostein Øksne

Thanks Ken!
The statistics from previous years indicate the 120 will stay open for at
least another week from now. Fortunately. :-)

The roads into the wilderness are more of a gamble. The one to Devil's
Postpile, for example, seems to close as I get there:

http://www.nps.gov/depo/planyourvisit/hours.htm

But I'm sure there's plenty to see with a bit of improvising along the way
too. Sometimes it's much more fun to shoot the landscapes that people don't
consider iconic. And sometimes even simply for that reason.

Personally I'm not a strict advocate of the business of landscapes being

I'm no stranger to snowy roads. I've looked briefly into buying snow
chains, and got the impression that cheap ones would be easier to find in
towns closer to the Sierras. I have a set for my own car that goes on and
off in a couple of minutes, and will try to find something with a similar

Very well done! I normally wouldn't spend the time looking at a GESO, but your
images were well worth the time.

Simply Marvelous!

I especially like Is and Rosenrot, but they are all inspiring.

Re: Pentax K-01 follow-up? (or other Pentax K-mount mirrorless)

available in stock (I know it's out of production)?

Or have I missed something which advises against the K-01? (I
must note that I haven't read too many reviews...)

The only thing that I don't like about K-01 is that you cannot attach a
EVF to it - you absolutely have to focus/compose by the screen. In the
bright light this may prove an issue. You could buy this accessory that
attaches to the back of the camera and blocks the stray light, but it
would make your camera significantly bigger.

Beside that - if you can handle the ergonomics - it's fine.

I don't grok though why you have so much trouble with using your Pentax
lenses on other cameras. All mirrorless (or most of them) cameras can be
used with Pentax lenses via adapter. I have one such adapter for Leica
M-mount, so that I can use my A50/1.2 on Ricoh GXR. You still get focus
peaking and semi-auto mode (you set aperture on the lens, camera sets
the rest - shutter speed and ISO). It works really well.

As for your original question - I couldn't possibly tell whether a
follow up to K-01 will come. I would say that it is possible but with
rather low probability but it is just a guess.

The only thing that I don't like about K-01 is that you cannot attach a EVF
to it - you absolutely have to focus/compose by the screen. In the bright

The lack of an EVF was also a concern to me. However even though
my old Fuji had one, I've seldom used it (mainly due to low resolution
and small size), thus my feelings are mixed about this...

I don't think that an adapter would be the best approach, mainly
because I own only two digital lenses (and if I'm to buy new ones it
would be of this sort). Thus no aperture ring. Besides that I'm not
sure that manual focus is that accurate on these lenses...

As for your original question - I couldn't possibly tell whether a follow up
to K-01 will come. I would say that it is possible but with rather low

That was my feeling also...

Thanks for the feedback!

Re: PESO - Tailgating?

2013-10-21 Thread Chris Mitchell
When Karin and I went to the White Sox game in Chicago, we were
mystified by lots of things including the signs that said something
like tailgating is permitted in lots A and B before the game only.
To us Brits, tailgating is following someone too close or following
someone through a barrier to avoid payment or security so we wondered
why anyone would want to do it before a game, but not after. We did
work it out after a while.

That common language again...

This was shot with an OptioMX. I used to carry it in the car
