Quoting Alan C c...@lantic.net: Apart from the hot, dry weather, I suppose the multitude of Eucalyptus species is a big factor too? Bracket suggestion
Periodically I have to go out in the field (to the tear-down area) and do a quick shot of a transmission case. But using an on-camera flash just doesn't cut it. Not enough light for good dof and, worse yet, straight-on reflects some of those flat edges too bright for a consistent exposure. I'm thinking what I'd like is some sort of bracket that would allow me 2 slaves, to the right and left about a foot, with diffusers attached. As far as flashes I'll probably go with some punch, like some old Sunpak 611 units with diffusers attached. But perhaps 2 decent shoe-mounts will do fine as well. Are you shooting with a K-5 or K-5 II? If so, you can go to ISO 1600 without generating noticeable noise. That should easily give you F!! DOF with a flash like the AF 540 and a good broad diffuser. Thanks, Dan. I really wish I could get down to the other wildlife preserve this time of year. The lakes there are really beautiful at times, with lots of cypress trees jutting out of them. It's really too bad that they close the place down during the fall and winter months, but it stays flooded throughout most of that time of year, so I figure they don't have much choice. Interesting article. But there are a couple of technology trends that might have made it more substantive. For instance, I anticipate that in the next two years we will see more Android and even Windows cameras. Iirc, Nikon has an Android unit. Pentax K-01 follow-up? (or other Pentax K-mount mirrorless)
(For the meat of the subject you could skip directly to the paragraph THE DILEMMA. Below I add some context to it.) As I've mentioned yesterday in the thread Which camera brand would you choose, if you started from scratch? I currently own a new-ish Pentax K-30 and an old FujiFilm FinePix S5600 / S5200. Although the K-30 serves me well, it fails to completely replace my Fuji S5600 for a simple reason: it's too large and heavy to easily fit into my laptop backpack (especially when I travel without photography in mind). (Even the Fuji is at the limit, however I managed to log it with me almost every day in the last few years, and everywhere I traveled.) Thus I'm looking for a portable replacement for the Fuji. I've looked at m4:3 (Olympus and Panasonic), Pentax Q, the Ricoh GR / GXR, Fuji, both fixed and interchangeable lenses, etc. I've even looked at point-and-shoot from various manufacturers, (including Pentax, Olympus, Nikon and Cannon) which I've disregarded due either lack of manual control or too small sensors. All (except the PS) were nice and compact replacements, however they all failed to beat the Pentax-K01 in two respects: they are more costly (at least in my country), and they don't take K-mount lenses of which I already have two. == THE DILEMMA == Therefore my question (or questions) is: is there any chance that a K-mount mirrorless will appear in the near future (i.e. 6 months till it hits the shelf)? Or should I buy the K-01 while it's still available in stock (I know it's out of production)? Or have I missed something which advises against the K-01? (I must note that I haven't read too many reviews...) Feedback is much appreciated, Ciprian. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Another thought I had - For an on-camera bracket in your situation, you don't need elegant or multi-purpose. So go to Ace Hardware, buy a strip of aluminum. Drill a hole through which you'll attach the strip to the camera with a 1/4x20 bolt, another couple of holes on the two ends to mount the flash heads. Done. Unless you want a fourth hole for mounting a short dowel to use as a handle. Re: Bracket suggestion
You might want to incorporate some sort of anti rotation feature as I can see the entire bracket rotating around the attaching screw on the camera. Also be careful about the length of the attracting screw as too long a screw can easily damage the camera. -Original Message- From: CollinB coll...@brendemuehl.net Subject: Re: Bracket suggestion I may even have some in the garage. I'd have to change the crop to a non-standard aspect ratio, but I could get a little bit more. Still, the horizon-corrected version leaves the image more unbalanced to my eye -- to the point of physically tilting my head to the right. Nevertheless, I do appreciate the suggestions. RE: On Getting Criticism
-Original Message- From: PDML [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of kwal...@peoplepc.com This was written with regard to writing, but much of it applies to photographers and their photography, as well. Agreed and it also applies to giving a critique of a photograph. A respected outdoor pro I'm friends with will always offer a way to improve an image when he's asked to critique it. I think the wisest advice that I've seen about giving a critique comes from the incomparable David Hurn in the book On Looking At Photographs. If you can find a copy, buy it - right after you've bought the even better On Being a Photographer. The other side of this is probably a useful guide on how to seek advice or criticism in such a way that you can make use of it, and not just have your ego destroyed unnecessarily. There's too much for me to type out as a quote, but here is some of what he says. [...] you will be asked to comment on a photographer's work. So what do you say? [...] the honest answer is [...] I will happily look at your photographs [...] do not expect me to comment because I do not know you or your concerns. When finished, say thankyou, with a smile. If you are expected to give more [...] ask a lot of questions When/where was this taken? what do you intend to do with the photographs now that you have made them and so on. [...] Understand that whether or not you like the pictures is unhelpful and irrelevant. Gauge the photographer's intent in making them [...] it might require a question or two. There will be a discrepancy between the photographs and the ideal images for the stated purpose. Offer guidance and advice on how to get from _here_ to _there_. The advice might be technical or concern issues of presentation or suggestions regarding publication / exhibition. In this way your remarks will be practical, useful and relevant. Re: Pentax K-01 follow-up? (or other Pentax K-mount mirrorless)
On 10/21/2013 9:28 PM, Ciprian Dorin Craciun wrote: == THE DILEMMA == Therefore my question (or questions) is: is there any chance that a K-mount mirrorless will appear in the near future (i.e. 6 months till it hits the shelf)? (I must note that I haven't read too many reviews...) The only thing that I don't like about K-01 is that you cannot attach a EVF to it - you absolutely have to focus/compose by the screen. In the bright light this may prove an issue. You could buy this accessory that attaches to the back of the camera and blocks the stray light, but it would make your camera significantly bigger. Beside that - if you can handle the ergonomics - it's fine. I don't grok though why you have so much trouble with using your Pentax lenses on other cameras. All mirrorless (or most of them) cameras can be used with Pentax lenses via adapter. I have one such adapter for Leica M-mount, so that I can use my A50/1.2 on Ricoh GXR. You still get focus peaking and semi-auto mode (you set aperture on the lens, camera sets the rest - shutter speed and ISO). It works really well. As for your original question - I couldn't possibly tell whether a follow up to K-01 will come. I would say that it is possible but with rather low probability but it is just a guess. I don't think that an adapter would be the best approach, mainly because I own only two digital lenses (and if I'm to buy new ones it would be of this sort). Thus no aperture ring. Re: PESO - Tailgating?
When Karin and I went to the White Sox game in Chicago, we were mystified by lots of things including the signs that said something like tailgating is permitted in lots A and B before the game only. To us Brits, tailgating is following someone too close or following someone through a barrier to avoid payment or security so we wondered why anyone would want to do it before a game, but not after. We did work it out after a while. That common language again...
