Re: Wal-Mart and film processing

2007-10-11 Thread Igor Roshchin

A bit delayed, but maybe it is helpful.

Of all the non-specialized labs, I like Wal-Mart's one-hour service.
It looks like its relatively consistent acceptable quality.
They usually don't mind redoing the prints if you don't like the
colors, they do matte finish, and by doing it locally there is a
smaller risk of a mixup.
I've used Wal-Mart 1-hour service in IL, MA, various parts of CA,
and probably elsewhere..

As for send-out labs, I had parts of my negatives lost and had
somebody's else negatives put together with mine when I tried to used
send-out services from Sams Club and from K-Mart. So I decided that
the savings were not worth my frustrations.
Later on, that thought brough me to professional photo labs...

Handwashing. It's all about handwashing. There are
astonishingly few things that are actually transmitted
through the air.

At the University of Rochester years ago, about 2/3 of
the pediatric residents picked up a nasty cold virus
called RSV during their first year. A very aggressive
hand hygiene program cut that to 10 percent. Similar
studies abound.

I would bet that your general pediatrician friend's
hand hygiene isn't up to snuff...

Rick is spot on. I film in a whole variety of situations every day,
including schools and hospitals. At the end of every job, once back at
the truck, I have some antiseptic wipes and my hands get the once over.
I do get flu, but usually caught from my wife and/or son.

BTW Rick are you still on for the International OCD Cleaning convention ? ;-)

Hi Scott

here's the wikipedia list of red shirts
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redshirt - I assume it is the penultimate
one you are referring to? Perhaps we could try fitting pictures to
the other definitions as well? I kinda like the cannon fodder theme.

Alastair

Redshirt (college sports)
Redshirt (character), a stock cannon fodder character in fiction,
particularly in Star Trek: The Original Series
Redshirts (military history), one of the followers of Giuseppe Garibaldi
Redshirts (military history), Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army
The Red Shirts, South African shack dwellers' movement, Abahlali baseMjondolo
Red Shirts, a paramilitary organization in Mexico in the 1930's
Kuilix, a Pend d'Oreilles woman whose name meant Red Shirt or Red One
Delphine Red Shirt, an Oglala Lakota Sioux writer
Red Shirt, South Dakota
Red Shirt (Factory), a post civil war Southern organization
Red Shirts (South Carolina), supporters of Wade Hampton in South
Carolina for the gubernatorial election of 1876
Khudai Khidmatgar, a non-violent movement of Pashtuns against the
British Empire in the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan
Red Shirt School of Photography, a growing trend in the 1950s,
pioneered by National Geographic photographers, to have subjects wear

  Rick

Thanks, Rick. I think a little overlap isn't necessarily bad. Unless
one had a model train set with real plants, it would awfully hard to
satisfy nature, landscape and macro with one photograph. But perhaps we
could turn them into two themes instead of three. Nature/landscapes and
macro/close up. These allow quite a lot of interpretation within the
same theme while not limiting participation due to a lack of specialty
 lenses.

Same for fashion/glamour and portraits. I have a feeling, though, that
combining them into simply a portrait theme would probably leave us
without too much fashion and glamour. I like fashion and glamour.
 Especially with long legs.

As for Red shirt, I thought you would know about that one. Look it
 up. g

I guess we need a couple more themes. I'll dig some more. How does
 aerial photography sound to everyone?

Seriously, Bill laid it out rather plainly during a previous discussion
of PUG themes, and I'm trying to abide:

 William Robb wrote:
The PUG is supposed to be as inclusive a gallery as possible. This
 means
that themes should be doable with fairly basic equipment, and that the
subject shouldn't be exclusive to certain parts of the world.

   William Robb

I think the themes thus far adhere to that philosophy rather well,
allowing much more liberal interpretation than flower or Halloween.

--- Scott Loveless [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I've put together a list of 12 themes for 2008.
  I've tried to stay away
from the more abstract themes and focus more on
  photographic genres, in
hopes that some of us will actually go try something
  new. The list with
  notes (not in order, necessarily):

  Documentary/photojournalism

'Tis the season - I thought February would be a good
  month, allowing
plenty of time to go through your
  Christmas/Festivus/New Year/whatever
  photos.

  Fashion/glamour

  Portrait

Photowalking - you guys are good at this, so it's
  pretty much a done
  deal. :-P

  Macro/close-up

  Red shirt

  Landscape

  Nature

  Equinox/synchronicity (x2) - I thought it would be
  nice to do this
twice, but I'm open to other suggestions. The
  equinox is near the end
of March and September, putting some serious time
  constraints on those
of us with other things to do. Having the relevant
  PUGs in May and
November would give everyone ample time to edit.

Etc - Yes, this is a theme. Walt Hamler
  proposed it and several
people said something like Cool! Basically, one
  month devoted to
whatever the hell you feel like shooting. A
  Super-PESO, if you will.

As you can see, there is quite some overlap of
  themes, such as nature,
macro and landscape, for example. I would expect
  nothing less than a
very liberal interpretation from this group.

This list is not concrete, obviously, so I'd
  appreciate your thoughts.

wireless control or second curtain sync, but otherwise looks like a
decent compact unit. The spec sheet suggests that it's compatible
with all P-TTL as well as TTL cameras, and has auto and manual

Speaking of flash units, looks like the Pentax AF-200FG compact flash
unit is now available. It's a little pricey for no HSS, dedicated
wireless control or second curtain sync, but otherwise looks like a
decent compact unit. The spec sheet suggests that it's compatible
with all P-TTL as well as TTL cameras, and has auto and manual
control too. Might be that nice stuff it in the bag in case I need
 some beach fill kinda flash.

I've got a different need, as I use my flashes in Auto on my 645 Super, I need
swivel to do bounce-flash in the landscape orientation due to the side-mounted
hotshoe (My Super Ricohflex is the same, but also needs PC Sync on the flash, a
feature the Pentax flashes lack as far as I'm aware).

 Hi!

Ladies and Gentlemen, has any of you actually tried the DA 16-45/4 on
film? I'd like to know what is the shortest focal length that can be
used on film (full frame) wide open with corners of the frame that are
 printably sharp.

It covers the full fram at about 20mm, but I expect the corners wont get
sharp (if at all) until closer to 24mm.

Re: Lightroom Question -- Subdirectories

[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Er, cough, er, yes, Godfrey. I get all that -- the difference between the
library and OS folders. I just needed to print out your post because it was
dense to read, not because I don't get it. Although you may have forgotten, I
am
computer programmer. I may not know assembly language, and I may not
understand some hardware things, like how a RAID card works, but I am highly
highly
computer literate.

Although maybe it will help someone else. :-)

Okay, it seems Lightroom will not behave the way I want when it comes to
subdirectories. I made the mistake of not importing the top directories,
although Lightroom didn't seem to allow me to. But I imported my Elements 5
catalogue and that is probably how top directories got skipped. I would prefer
that
subdirectories pictures only show in the subdirectory film strips not in the
top directory film strips. The way Lightroom currently works, it makes my
subdirectory structure sort of useless. So I guess I will have to make all
subdirectories top directories.

I already see two features that I wish Lightroom had.

1. An option/preference that can be selected to make pictures only show in
subdirectory folders, not top directories.
2. A batch synchronize folders routine. Where one can pick out a HD or a top
directory and have Lightroom synchronize the whole thing. Import pictures
added since the last time the batch synchronization has been run. In my
current
library setup, for instance, my drive J is not at the top level. If I could
have drive J at the top level (with no film strip), then I could click on it
and synchronize folders and it could synchronize the whole drive. So some way
to do a batch synchronization like that would be nice.

Thanks for your answers though, you answered my questions in your first post.

Marnie :-)

The site seems to be having problems again. I'm getting:

Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80004005'

  System resource exceeded.

  /aspupload/detail.asp, line 19

  .whatever that means :-)

  Cheers

Re: WTB - SMC-A 20mm 2.8

2007-10-11 Thread P. J. Alling
Unfortunately, the M and K equivalents are only f4.0 so they won't
really meet Cotty's requirements. I can't condone his unnatural
experiments but he has a right to do them...

Pentax A-series lenses sell out fast everywhere in the past year.

For Cotty's purposes, an M or K series lens of similar quality would
do the same thing, of course, since he's going to remove the little
 bugger's pecker. ];-)

Godfrey,
The lens designs for the M and K 20mm are different and f4.0.

Re: What's that Site?

2007-10-11 Thread P. J. Alling
Just out of curiosity I decided to look at the ratings for the K10D.
This site mixes equipment ratings with store ratings and seems to offer
no way to disambiguate the two. It seems really awful to me. I doubt it
would be much use for product research.

Did some playing this past weekend with the onboard filters with the Fn
 button.

Shot this old trapper property, the cabin was burned down this spring,
and only the shed and and hu...sub office remain.

I shot in colour and used the sepia filter set to low.

In PSCS i applied a bit of cyan photofilter.

I know its not as great as what PS could do, but its pleseantly ok.

K10D, 16-45 and well you know

 Dave
