Re: 31/1.8 vs Sigma 35/1.4 art
Larry, Good friend of mine has Sigma lens in Canon mount. He's using it on 5dmk3. The results are excellent. Wide open center sharpness is really good. The rendering of this lens is also very pleasing to his and actually to my eye as well. So if you really need 1.4 over 1.8, you cannot really go wrong with Sigma. As for ergonomics, I suggest you visit a closest to you camera store and give it a try. Good luck with your hunt. Boris On 19 Oct 2016 08:13, "Larry Colen"wrote: I do a lot of my photography in really low light. The 2/3 stop between f/1.8 and f/1.4 doesn't seem like much, but when you're talking the difference between 1/13 and 1/20 Second, it can be a huge difference. Similarly, doing night landscapes, the 2/3 stop can be a big deal with star motion in the background. Does anyone have experience with both the 31 limited and the 35 art? I can't justify buying the faster lens without selling the 31. It's been a workhorse lens for me, particularly since it was my only fast "standard" in APS. I've heard good things about the sigma, and even if it isn't as sharp in some situations, the faster aperture would make an even bigger difference in others. Thanks Godfrey. The closer to the horizon, the more interesting the atmospheric effects, but sharpness is lost. I just shot when I happened to notice that the moon was visible from my front yard, but I think I lucked out in getting some of the close to the horizon color but not a lot of atmospheric distortion. Re: PESO - An Iconic Place
Brian, I like both versions. Regarding your question about the B one: I see B alright on my screen, but I would have boosted the exposure just a bit. I am not sure which version is better. At first, I saw only the B, and couldn't figure out where the color version was. And I thought B was probably superior. Then I just clicked on the forward arrow. And liked the color one as well. But they are very different. The color version reminds me of the impression I had from Badlands National park, when we came there shortly before the sunset: I thought "Martian Chronicles" should be shot there. Re: 31/1.8 vs Sigma 35/1.4 art
Larry, I perfectly understand your dilemma. But... Selling 31/1.8 to purchase Sigma 35/1.4 is like selling your left kidney to finance the surgery on your right one. IMHO, 31/1.8 is just too good of a lens to let it go. It is almost as good as 77/1.8. The rendering of both of these is so great that it would be a high bar to match it, save to exceed it. (I am talking about low light performance.) Of 3 fast primes that are always traveling in my bag, FA 50/1.4 is the least used, - exactly for the reason explained. (Actually, in my most recent trip, I've decided to leave that at home, to save on the carry-on weight. No regrets from that decision. I've used all lenses I had with me.) Igor Larry Colen Tue, 18 Oct 2016 22:14:07 -0700 wrote: I do a lot of my photography in really low light. RE: PESO: My Fox
Igor wrote: I haven't seen foxes here, but our diggers are armadillos. I am too lazy to get outside at wee hours to see them. And there are might be someone else who keeps re-digging the same hole in front of the house. (I've sort of given up on closing it back every time.) Other large-scale pests in our yard are deers. A block down the road, people are actively feeding them, so there is a flock that is almost fearless. And they come to chew the roses. I've finally found a spray ("deers and rabits") that deters the dears. I am not sure if something like that can also be effective against foxes.. Cattle used to graze in Epping Forest ( a few minutes' walk from me) and at one point we used to have to shift three quarters of a ton of mobile pot roast out of our garden fairly regularly. I'd love them back now to take photos of them. We have deer as well, but our lot are very timid and it's unusual to get anything close up. We used to have loads of rabbits, but the fox population has dealt with that! Send your deer over, we have an excess of roses. RE: PESO - An Iconic Place
Brian Walters wrote: I was thinking of using this for the November PUG but decided I'd rather use something local. I always liked the colour version in the late afternoon light but wondered about a black and white version. So, here's the black & white version: http://lyons-ryan.org/PESO/slides/_IGP1804-K5-1-peso.html The colour one can be viewed using the right hand arrow at the top. Thoughts? Tricky. I like both versions, but the light puts the colour version just ahead for me. RE: PESO Orb Spider
Larry Colen wrote: We had a particularly pretty orb spider in the front yard. This one was a lot redder/oranger than most of ours, unfortunately the color doesn't really come through, I forgot to shoot a grey card. Nice, but I can't say I like getting to close to them. Here's one of mine, which I chose to make sharp in places to give a different view: http://flic.kr/p/MFtosh Malcolm -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
