Re: IR camera conversion

2023-02-09 Thread Mark C
I had my K01 converted to IR a few years ago. I sent it to Isaac Szabo and did
a great job. He also converted a Nikon P6000 for me many years ago.

https://www.isaacszabo.com/infrared.html

I opted for the 720nm filter. Check out his fish photos while at that website.

In terms of lenses, the humble DA 18-55mm kit lens is very good in terms of not
having an IR hotspot. Both the original version and the updated WR version work
well, and despite being inexpensive optical quality is pretty good. My most
used lens with this setup, though, is the D FA 15-30 f2.8. No IR hotspot and
optical quality is excellent. My DA 16-45 f4 has a terrible hotspot and the DA
17 - 70 was only marginally better. Haven't tried out many other lenses.

Here;s a little flickr collection of shots with the K01:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/organize/?start_tab=new_set

I also have an IR converted K-10D. I bought it already converted. With a DSLR,
you really need to meter through live view for accuracy with IR, the meter in
the pentaprism is not sensitive to IR light, and while it can be re-calibrated,
it won't be as accurate as metering off the sensor.

Good luck,

Re: PESO - Water Music

2021-11-18 Thread Mark C
Thanks, Rick - I had been wondering what kind of piano that came from.
The soundboard was not far from the shore at all - a couple of yards at
most. And a a nice concrete boat ramp was just a few feet out of the
frame. It would have been easy for someone to lug it there and drop it
in the water, hoping to see it float off, in which case they would have
been disappointed...

Paul, the rectangular shape tells that it’s the frame, strings, and soundboard

The cast-iron frame would weigh about 150-200 lbs, though, and a thin maple
soundboard wouldn’t be bouyant enough to float it. How it got there remains a
mystery-- though a raging torrent could have done it, I suppose.

PESO - Water Music

2021-11-15 Thread Mark C

https://www.flickr.com/photos/markcassino/51683506849

Shot last November, I never got around to processing  and posting this
image - visited this spot today and remembered this shot. Today I didn't
manage to shoot out a whole roll of film - got 9 of 12 exposure in the
bag - so it will be a day or two before I finish up today's work.

Thanks Ann. I added one stop for the yellow filter, with the cloudy sky

Our San Diego hotel sits between the Convention Center (and a harborfull of

our hotel window we could watch the activity there.

Sniffing around the web, I learned that San Diego is Dole's largest terminal,
with four smaller ones on the Gulf and East coasts. Dole owns about 20
refrigerated container ships (each container has its own chiller, using power
from the ship); each ship carries about 300 containers. Most carry bananas,
while others carry pineapples. Other fruit companies lease container space and
ships rather than owning a fleet.

These are unusual for container ships, because they have their own cranes
(Central American port facilities are apparently not relaible that way). This
ship was unloading containers with the front crane at the same time as the rear
crane was loading empties.

More that you ever wanted to know, right? I think I’ll have a banana with my

GESO - Bedford PA

2021-11-07 Thread Mark C
It's been a long time since I posted a GESO, though I am still shooting
as much as ever.  So here is a small gallery of shots from southern
Pennsylvania and western Maryland, taken in late August:

https://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/cumberland-md-bedford-pa?blog=9

Almost everything was shot with an Mz-S and Tamron 28-75 f2.8 lens and a
variety of film stocks, mostly outdated. The shots from Old Bedford
Village were made with a Sigma EX 70-200 f2.8 lens.

We were on a genealogical vacation and my wife was hunting for info on
her ancestors who lived in those parts long ago, so the trip was
confined to small towns, back roads, cemeteries and the boondocks...

Re: How do I correct an old image like this?

2021-10-03 Thread Mark C
When I was trying to restore old photos a while back there were several
where it looked like one color faded much more severely than the others
which would throw off the whole color balance. The only solution as to
manually boost the color that was out of wack. But I was working with
prints, not negatives.

It's hard to judge the colors - skin tones, the wooden chair back, the
wooden picture frames look OK and the ceiling in the upper right is
white, which seems logical. If there was something in the image that I
knew was gray I'd open levels and click on it with the midtone
eyedropper. That usually helps restore color balance.

I inherited a bunch of very old faded prints a few years ago, and it was
amaze how much info would pop out of them just using auto color.

Hi Bill -

Maybe I over reacted but I'm sick of people promoting violence. It leads
to escalation. You criticize someone for not being a polite driver and
not letting you in - well, couldn't you be the polite driver and just
fall in behind them? And the hill he dies on nonsense - that's ridiculous.

I don't expect you to know anything about shootings in my vicinity. My
point was that its a mistake to think you can intimidate someone and
expect them to back down, because there are a lot of people who are in a
place where crashing into your nice truck makes more sense than getting
out of your way. And folks who feel that way aren't just here in the US,
they are everywhere.  It's not about my country or your country, its
about human reality.

Within hours, actually less than two hours, of ordering the new

about filters on the A* 400 f2.8 and its optical diagram does show a
filter in place. never thought to check that. I always used a UV filter
with that lens but wondered if it was really needed.

Re: Is it hopeless? Help needed

2021-05-03 Thread Mark C
I lost my original Q to a swollen battery. Using super glue did not
occur to me, maybe that would have worked. I did a lot of googling on
ways to solve this problem and did not find any useful answers. Avoid
doing anything intrusive to the battery - like drilling a hole in it and
trying to set a screw or hook eye to pull it out. (one of the not-useful
answers I saw while googling.) Apparently lithium batteries can burst
into flames. In my case, I just bought a Q7 which proved to be a much
bigger upgrade than expected.

Good luck

I remember someone recommending diaper bags for photo gear, but that was

Re: 'Why I still shoot with Pentax'

I still use Pentax for the same reason - it still does the job for me. I
also appreciate the quality Pentax puts into its cameras. Over the past
couple of years I've taught a few landscape photography classes and that
has exposed me to other camera systems. Pentax stands out in several
ways - the image quality (especially at at high iso),  the quality of
the view finders, weather sealing, and the many sensor shift features
(IBIS, horizon correction, etc.) all come to mind.

I have a contrarian streak and don't mind not using a mainstream brand.
But I'm also not a brand loyalist - if something better comes along and
changing brands makes sense, so be it. For the time being, Pentax is OK

Re: Comparing Sony A7C to Pentax K-1 II

2020-11-22 Thread Mark C
Thanks for posting that. It's an interesting read, though the article is
largely confined to comparing the cameras' handling/ergonomics and
autofocus. Personally I don't see an large difference between DSLR's and
mirrorless bodies. If the core feature set is equivalent, both can do a
good job with each approach introducing different trade-offs.

Unfortunately, the core feature set is not always equivalent, and while
the K1 is still a solidly competitive camera, camera's like the A7R IV
seem to take things to the next level. (I say "seem to" since I've not
used one.)

These days I'm shooting mostly film and the 6x7 is my most used camera,
so I don't feel a pressing need to upgrade. But obviously the future
will be digital and would like to see signs that there will be an
upgrade path for Pentax full frame digital. Whether that path continues
to be DSLR's or veers to mirrorless is not important to me.

Re: Pentax Mirrorless

I converted my K01 to infrared and use it quite a bit. I use an
inexpensive XIT LCD Loup as a finder - makes the camera rather

useful camera and when I bought it, it was quite a bargain.

Pentax did venture into the mirrorless realm with the K-01,

Walters feels it was a missed opportunity since, without an EVF, it

Re: Monster Adapter K to Sony E AF Adapter

What caught my attention about this adapter is that it seems to be
striving to provide full support to older lenses. AFAIK, most K to E
mount adapters do not support auto focus or even in body aperture

insurmountable hurdles for adapters.  I know folks who have upgraded to
Sony bodies while keeping their existing non-Pentax brand lenses, it
would be nice to have that option for Pentax glass.

It is yet to be seen how well the Monster adapter works and how much it
will cost, though.

That said, I have a Beseler 23C that I've been trying to give away for

BTW - some enlarger lenses are excellent for studio macro work. I took

I agree re creamy bokeh - if people are going to notice the bokeh you
don't want them noticing the details of stuff in the bokeh...

Sounds like the 105mm f2.4 is doing well on you your 645Z. Sharp with
minimal chromatic aberrations? An upgrade path to digital MF using my
6x7 lenses is an option I've been trying to keep open, though I wonder
how well they will perform. And in most cases I have the
Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 6x7 lens, vs the later SMC 67 versions. On
film I don't think the difference is huge, but on digital I'm not sure...

beautiful creamy bokeh possible. I also use a Ricoh Diacord TLR, a 6x6
TLR with a f3.5 Tessar design lens. The results are incredibly sharp
but you really can't get a smooth bokeh. Forms clump together and
highlights in particular render as circles with almost crisp
circumferences. Each lens has its own purpose. The Pentax lens lets you
easily isolate a subject against a soft background, giving the nice 3d
look. But the Diacord is almost magical in creating the appearance of
infinite depth of field, even when only stopped down to f8 or even f5.6.

I think one issue is that there is no real agreement about what makes
for a "good" bokeh. The lens in the Diacord seems to have pretty typical
Tessar type characteristics, including the "clumpy" bokeh. But a lot of
folks seem to like that - especially in the rendering of specular
highlights. Others look for a creamy bokeh with everything running
together.

Re: PESO: 3D pop?

2020-09-27 Thread Mark C
Lens design has a lot to do with how bokeh is rendered. I've been
shooting film almost exclusively this year, a lot with a Pentax 6x7 and
105mm f2.4. That lens  seems to have been designed to produce the most
beautiful creamy bokeh possible.

But a lot of
folks seem to like that - especially in the rendering of specular
highlights.  Others look for a creamy bokeh with everything running
together.

Re: Central Camera in Chicago and PDMLs Year End Quote List

2020-06-02 Thread Mark C
I'm sorry to hear. this. Central Camera is always a stop for me when I'm
in Chicago, and several years ago I had an enjoyable and informative
conversation with Mr. Flesh, who was working the film counter at the
time. He certainly had an interesting perspective on the evolution of
photography over the years. I hope it reopens, though so much of the
store's charm lay in the old and odd items tucked away in the store's
nooks and crannies, probably irreplaceable.

Hi Everyone!

I hope you and your families are well and safe during these very difficult
times.

I thought I’d share a photography related story. Many of you probably know of
Central Camera store located downtown Chicago. It’s a quirky but fun camera
store, which has been in business for 121 years, founded 1899. Don Flesh is
the 3rd generation owner; his grand-father started the business; Flesh is aged
72.

Sadly, Central Camera suffered looting and was burned out. Flesh is confident
he can get the store back up and running, which is good. He is also not angry
and stands “with the African American community in solidarity.”

On the one hand I share this story because, well, this is a photography list
and this is a photography story and I thought photographers on the list would
be interested.

But on the other hand I thought I’d highlight two Flesh quotes that would have
definitely made our PDML Quote List that Mark Roberts puts together every year
had Flesh been a PDMLer.

Quote #1: “I wanted to go in, but the looters, there were so many people
walking by and I was a little bit shy and fearful and all I had was an umbrella
that was closed, and I didn’t think I could knock out everybody. No Rambo
here,” he said.

Quote #2: “Flesh started the live interview by noting that he had run out of
film and his phone had died so he was unable to photograph the scene. Asked
for his parting thoughts, he said, ‘I hope everybody is safe. Everybody should
learn a lesson. What is the lesson? Be prepared. Have more film in your
pocket.’”

I’ve included the link to the article below.

It works in "A", and, - it works in P-TTL-HS (high-speed).

Does anybody know why that is so?
I thought the high-speed mode was an "extra" - that some cameras
could utilize *in addition* to P-TTL, - for faster shutter speeds,
but that all P-TTL capable cameras should be able to work with P-TTL
setting.

(Both K-7 and K-5IIs were working just fine with P-TTL.)

Any ideas?

But today she wouldn't even eat that.

Then when she jumped out of my lap this evening she couldn't walk,
couldn't stand up.

The vet said she had severe kidney failure and could probably live
another week with three days of IV fluids and if I'd learn how to give
her subcutaneous fluids at home. But even with that massive
intervention, she wasn't going to last much longer.

I was afraid she was going to suffer too much so I had her euthanized.
It was time. I wasn't ready & I didn't want to, but it was the best
thing for Baxter.

Re: Ball Head Question

2018-08-27 Thread Mark C

Thanks Paul.

Visted the local camera store this afternoon and they =showed me a Sirui
K-30X which looks to be very good. Unfortunately the store was a mess -
they were getting ready to paint the walls and had pulled all the
merchandise off wall displays and piled it up in the aisles. So they
were only able to find the Sirui and a Manfrotto to show me, though more
were out there somewhere...

I'm planning on  picking up the Sirui - checking the reviews it looks to
be very good, and has their own safety lock system for AS plates, which
addresses the one minor concern still on my mind. After trying it I
realized that I don't need a lever control, the oversized knob works
fine. Overall it looks like a good ball head at a decent price.

Re: Ball Head Question

2018-08-27 Thread Mark C
That's an interesting video and it touches on some of the concerns I had
with the AS plate system, namely whether it has a safety catch that
would prevent accidental detachment. But I watched some videos of the AS
system and it seems that some of the heads - or maybe its a factor of
the plate - have a safety catch the keeps a loose plate from falling off
the head. Having to use a hex tool instead of a d-ring / wing nut type
tightening setup was also a concern for me, but it looks like there are
AS plates with d-ring type tighteners. It seems that in terms of variety
of plates available, the AS system offers a lot of options. I didn't
know about the many accessories that you can get that can also mount on
AS plates - like macro flash brackets - that look pretty interesting.
I'm going to visit the local camera shop this afternoon and try some
things out first hand.

It seems that wanting a lever vs knob knocks out a lot of heads.
Manfrotto has a lot of lever models but they do not use arca swiss
plates. Really Right Stuff has a few but they are 2x-3x the cost of
other brands. There is an inexpensive "Vanguard" brand that meets all
of my requirements, but its a brand I never heard of and is very
inexpensive, so I have doubts

Any thoughts?

Re: Ball Head Question

2018-08-26 Thread Mark C
Thanks, Larry - those are two very good suggestions. The Induro BHD1
looks to be very close to what I want. It doesn't have a lever lock per
se, but the knob is looks to be pretty large with good grips, so it
should work even with gloves. I'll be taking a closer look at the Induro
line up.

Have you checked benro/induro? They are a great value, I go a couple of sizes

Nicely detailed capture of a beautiful bird.

Thanks, Rick. You are right about the collections. The 19th Century
Landscapes exhibit was excellent but the overall collections were very
engaging. The "folk and self taught" collection was my personal favorite.

I like these Mark.

We visited the MAM in November (b!), and loved it. One of my
photos from that trip is in the Annual.

It's a gorgeous building with a very intriguing collection.

Lately I've been taking the Q7 as my sole camera on weekend excursions

Thanks, Ann. The museum itself is ran architectural masterpiece, both
visually and in terms of having a relaxing environment with views of the
waterfront.
