What a great PUG! I think the Black and White EQ is my favorite.
Kenneth, looks like you've got a car's headlight or taillight on your
 picture there :)

Derby, how did you get that adorable child to hold so still? What a
great focusing job. And I love the Mirco Car, Andy :) The lighting
on the Applelight is so well captured, and all of the flower photos
are so well done - I expected a bunch of flower pictures this month
but I am not disappointed. That caterpillar is especially lovely too,
fits right in with all the flowers, the colors are spectacular and the
 focus is spot on.

What a great gallery everyone! :)

 said:
Dear, I really think you should post those and get the yack and quack

everyone. I laughed so hard, I felt I had to.

I finally got around to trying that technique where you turn the zoom ring
while the shutter is open. Plus, I really practiced with PSE 5 level
adjustments and adding grain (why should Frank have all the grain-fun).

 K10D, DA* 50 - 135, shutter exposure was 2 seconds at f16, ISO 100. Auto
levels, some sharpening, and grain. I focused at 50mm then turned the ring
while the shutter was open to finish in 2 seconds at 135mm.

 Comments critique welcome.

I was pretty meh about the new camera but that presentation was very
appealing. I' kinda want one now. Not that I'm going to get one. I'll
probably have to wait until the K40 or 50D to justify a new camera.
He didn't mention the 20FPS burst mode either... hmmm.
Honestly, I'd like a much better noise situation with the high ISO shooting
in the K10 (the *istD was better here) but other than that, the K10 is great
for me so far.

The vines really add to the oldness of it.

Re: PESO: Fishing

2008-01-23 Thread cbwaters
I agree with Bob here. I'm not really sure what the building is. Also, it
took me way too long to notice the fishermen on the bank to the right. If
that's your title, you might try to actually include them in the photo :)
OTOH, I do really like the look of the photo. The colors and light are very
nice to look at. You seem to be good at getting a colorscape that looks
very nice. I've been meaning to ask you how you do that.

 Dave,
You are trying to give Ralf some competition. ;-)
I enjoy this picture, colors of the open water, composition, details,
 but...
The main building/structure in the back is visually confusing to me.
I suppose that's the architect's fault, but I have trouble wrapping my
 head around it.
Is that a big arched facade hiding behind a big gray sail or a ship
 headed our way.
 Regards, Bob S.

OT: Computer Q

2008-01-21 Thread cbwaters
Hello,
This might be an easy question and I think I already have the answer but
it's beyond my usual and minute area of total understanding, so:

My printer can hook to my computer via USB, wired, or wireless networking.
I recently acquired a wireless network router/hub thingie so I have retired
my DSL modem and now have a few extra network ports now at my desk. I've
had my last couple of printers on USB and before that, well... that's been a
while anyway.
Should I configure the printer as a network device?
I don't have any other computers who might take advantage of the wireless
capabilities (yet).

uber high tech space camera: several million dollars
70-200 F2.8 lens for said camera (available soon, really...honest)
nylock nut for the bolt that holds the tether to the camera
Apparently costs too much.

PESO: X2

2008-01-14 Thread cbwaters
We went to Florida last weekend to retrieve the kids from their Christmas
holiday beach vacation with Grandma Grandpa. (Kids get to go to the beach
for two weeks and we have to stay home working until they have to go back to
school. Then we get to drive a thousand miles to get them back home...)
hmmm.
Anyway... We went to a state park where they had lots of interesting birds.
http://cwaters.smugmug.com/gallery/4169363#243523049-A-LB

This one was cropped some, sharpened some, and the color was punched up a
tad. It was a cloudy day, I was on a tourist-filled airboat, and I only had
the 50-200 on the K10. Pretty good for the conditions, I think.

We were staying not very close to the beach. When the sky looked to be
clearing, we decided to try and catch the sunset. We missed the sun but the
clouds remaining light were impressive. I wish I'd have brought my tripod
from the car but the SR was certainly helpful.

Re: Question for automobile enthusiasts on the list

Bah...
My 81 Mustang (Rustang) was a Fix Or Repair Daily.

I do so like the Buy American concept these days. A friend was giving me
some grief about replacing the Nissan with another Nissan a while back. I
asked him where his Chevy was made(Canada). He didn't know. My Xterra was
made in Tennessee.
Of course the money went to Nissan in Japan, but I don't think that the
sentiment was ever really about who actually got the money. Who cares if
the money sits in brokerage accounts here or there? The Buy American idea
was intended to keep American workers employed, right?

OT: It's hart, being outdated

2007-12-28 Thread cbwaters
Youse guys often talk about obsolescence.
I'm running into a problem with my computer more often these days. Some of
you might have older computers than I have so you should just quit reading
now because I'll sound like I'm whining for nothing.
It seems the upgrade parts, being so far out of production are either scarce
or more expensive than newer/higher performance parts. My guy told me today
that the PC3200 memory my computer uses is actually getting more expensive
because production has ramped down to make newer stuff. I'm trying to find
a decent but cheap video card but I don't have an AGP slot, let alone a
PCI-E slot. PCI cards cost more.

Oh, I suck... but I still feel like I have a valid problem. I can't afford
to throw away computers that work well enough (mostly) and buy new
technology for the sake of keeping-up but I've fallen behind the curve now
and being three or four generations behind current sucks too...

Anybody got a 256MB PCI video card lying around?

it's smarter to bite the bullet and upgrade.

Re: OT: OMG...

2007-12-23 Thread cbwaters
That was a very insensitive thing to say. Absolutely unacceptable in
polite company. This is ostensibly a family-friendly list.
Perhaps you have not had the experience of having somebody you know
wither away and die from cancer. If that's true, you've been very lucky so
far. I hope that luck holds out for you. If you have, then I would say that
you are possibly the most insensitive person out there.
I try really hard not to get swept-up in the average flame war.
We have many people on this list from all over the world. Most of the
regular posters are quite easy to get along with. True, some are more work
to deal with but they generally have some redeeming qualities that make the
work worthwhile. Many of us have been coexisting here for a very long time.
You need to go back from whence you came and learn how to get along with
people. Your redeeming qualities have so far remained quite hidden. Maybe
you're not as difficult in person but your internet bravado isn't endearing
at all.
Please make some attempt to get along with people or hit the road. When
you've gathered what it takes to be part of a community, you're welcome to
return to talk about cameras and pictures.

This isn't really a personal thing. Honestly, I'm more interested in the
equilibrium of the list than poking at you.

Please have a nice Christmas.

   Wow. That's bizarre.

Hardly, jpeg is lossy compression. It grabs a square of pixels and
averages them, you lose both dynamic range and resolution with
jpeg. PNG is lossless and opensource. The other problem with jpeg
is that because of the way it handles compression, it chokes on
film grain. There isn't a way to feed a jpeg encoder a image with
allot of film grain and have it spit out a reasonable result.
People use it because they just don't know any better.

You're talking about displaying photographs on the internet, which is

to be a way of sharing information quickly and easily. Image
  compression
quality takes a back seat most of the time around here, and no one

seems to be complaining about it.

Your elitist attitude is grating. If you really don't care about what
others think of your photos, why bother posting them in the first
  place?

I thought they may enjoy it, I was wrong, instead they looked for
something to complain about. Typical of the bulk of people really.

I've got more bandwidth than God when I'm at work. I work for the
company formerly known as UUNET. I've got straight 100MB Full-Duplex
connections directly to the alter.net backbone. Your site is still too
slow. PNG is NOT a format for rendering photographic output. If fact
you probably couldn't have picked a worse format (Well, GIF, but it's
got all the bad points of PNG with the addition of patent
encumbrance). JPEG is the only commonly supported graphics format
suited to web display of photographic images. Yes, it does have some
bad points, but a max quality JPEG with smaller, lower-quality
thumbnails will produce similar quality output (visually
indistinguishable for the full-size image) with far better page render
speeds (because your thumbnail's won't be 20x the size they need to
 be).

Re: How to deodorize old Pentax?

2007-12-13 Thread cbwaters
Peter,
I bought a pristine black MX (for $20! You may hate me if you wish.) from
somebody on Craig's List a couple years ago. It was in a never-ready case
and the previous owner was obviously a smoker. I'm not. The thing REEKED
of stale yucky smoke.
I left it out on my counter, bedside table, dresser, in the car, In the
camper (PDML West), in my camera bag, and even at my in-law's place once.
Using it and leaving it out in fresh air made it not smell anymore.

Now it's closed-up in a bookcase with some old books. I fear it'll smell
again soon if I don't show it some love.

 Hi there!

I have a Pentax S1A that I want to get overhauled and working again.

Here's the thing though, I am trying to deodorize it first. The camera
has spent the last 30+ years inside it's case and the back of the
camera (curiously not the front) seems to have this strong sweetish
aroma coming from the black textured area that makes me dizzy. I have
let it sit in the open air for the last 2 months and nothing changed.

I have tried dish soap, potassium hand soap, castile hand soap. No
luck. I've tried leaving it in a casserole container with baking soda
for several days, no luck either.

I still have on my list to try: vinegar in a bowl in the container
overnight, paste of hydrogen perioxide mixed w/ sodium bicarbonate in
order to generate massive oxygen and scrub at it, zeolite overnight,
newspapers overnight, charcoal overnight, spray it with febreze
 (cyclodextrins).

I suppose a last resort would be to strip the grip material off and
replace it, but I'd like to avoid doing that because it's in perfect
 condition.

 Advice appreciated.

 Thanks!

PESO: Emily Vs. Lake Michigan

Taken at the same time as my Is it Winter photo, here's my daughter Emily.
Born and raised in Georgia (just west of Hotlanta), it appears Emily isn't

I'm just lazy but sometimes I see how the flaws make the image more

I took several shots of this carousel and chose this one as the best

the hand-written signs and also the single clear face near the center

I think shutter speed was around 1/15 or 1/8. I didn't have a tripod so
I set the camera down on some immovable object - I forget what - and
 used the self-timer.

Current camera classics? WAS:Re: Mouldering film camera survey

2007-12-07 Thread cbwaters
Godfrey,
you view is certainly logical, if a bit dispassionate. I tend to impart a
soul and personality to my possessions (and indeed items I want but will
never own for lack of funds).
I'm wondering if you had posters of cars, bikes or whatever on your walls as
a teenager.
I admire gadgets and equipment. I'm sure I give them more importance than
they're really worth.

I guess my point with the post was to say that nobody will have any of the
current crop of digital cameras in five to ten years time. We'll have
dumped them for newer models or binned them because they're dead and cannot
be repaired. And to contrast that with the thread about cameras we own and
can't quite bring ourselves to sell even if we're not using them is
interesting

God help the poor prat who tries to send Pentax his K10 for service or even
a CLA in 2015 let alone 2037.

Old things are interesting because they're old and remind us of good
times of the past we had with them, using them. It has nothing to do
with whether they were designed to last 30 years or not.

Same here. I bought my MX (black) in 1979 from Techno in the Euston Road
(London) for either 106 or 104 GBP, body only. Also a 28mm 2.8 on the
same day, although I can't remember the price of the lens. Drives,
winders, more bodies have come and gone since then, but the camera and
lens (and a winder) sit retired on a shelf with a couple of other cameras.

I'll be buried with the MX ;-)

PESO: Is it winter?

2007-12-05 Thread cbwaters
This is a marina in Petoskey, MI.
Composition isn't quite right. Maybe I could crop it (and fix the tilted
horizon) but the flaws will likely serve to remind me about the day. We
were meeting down there at the park before going up the hill to eat at a
pizza place the serves the Heap of Meat pizza. It's got a great name and
it's a mighty fine, too. The wind was blowing about 20mph. It was probably
about 25*F. One of the kids found out the hard way that the slide in the
playground had a puddle at the bottom. And I didn't have any gloves so my
fingers were cold.

Adam's lovely portraits of his Better Half inspired me to send off one of
 mine:

 http://bp0.blogger.com/_EaTEtfR4WJw/R0sahwEIbcI/BBE/X1HA7-iBUjo/s1600-h/nov_26+003.jpg

I've gotta tell ya, she takes a horrible photo. I mean, I've taken
dozens of her, and very few are worthy of anything but the trash heap.
She's a lovely-looking woman in real-life, and when we first met she
told me she doesn't photograph well. I told her, Don't you worry,
I'll get a good one of you! It's been almost a year and a half now,
and I have ~very~ few palatable photos of her. I know that part of
the problem is that she absolutely freezes up when she sees a camera.

This is one of the few that don't make either of us cringe, and even
then it doesn't do her justice. I kind of like her smiling eyes.

This was taken at the Gelato shop at which I took last week's PESO
(the Norman Rockwell one, according to Bob W). While we were there,
she took this one of me:

 http://bp3.blogger.com/_EaTEtfR4WJw/R0xYSQEIbgI/BBk/G_pELxjeZLo/s1600-h/nov_27+002.jpg

She's a pretty good photographer (owns an Oly PS), but don't judge
her by this one: Look at what she has to work with. g

 cheers,
 frank

Awaiting takeoff

2007-12-03 Thread cbwaters
I was in Michigan again right after Thanksgiving for my sister's wedding(see
my earlier post for the funny photographer story).
Our plane home was delayed so we sat in the airport in Flint for a couple
hours I took this out the window while somebody else's plane home was
getting ready for takeoff.
K10 and FA 28-105. I adjusted the white balance and may have upped the
sharpening a little in the conversion.
http://cwaters.smugmug.com/gallery/3930734#228209720

By the way, they let me take my tripod as a carry-on. Our big suitcase was
too heavy on check-in (odd because it actually had less stuff than when we
flew up...) They wanted us to take 5# out or pay a $50 overage charge. The
first thing I thought of was the tripod so it came out. Some other stuff
came out and was packed into the garment bags. It wasn't until I was in the
line at security that I started to think about how many ways the tripod
could be used as a weapon... I heard the screener say Oh, that's a bunch
of camera lenses... and a really nice camera... tripod... ok, it's all
good. I was pleased because I didn't know what we were going to do at that
point if they balked.

Well, they can't take your stuff from you BUT...Most times by the time you
get to the screeners you've waited a while and you're not inclined to go
back to your car or house to deposit the offending gack. They'll gladly
deposit your property in a bin from which there is no getting your stuff
back. TSA sells your stuff.

Very nice public service.

I haven't flown for over two years. Last time it was with my bike,

Weekend's war story

2007-11-27 Thread cbwaters
My sister got married on Saturday.
Bride's Father, brother(me), and groom were at the home where the wedding
was to take place a little more than an hour before the nuptials were to
commence when the telephone rings.
The groom answers the telephone and goes all pale with a weird look on his
face. The photographer has hit a power pole on this road and he thinks the
lines are going to crash down on his car. Brother and groom head down the
road in a 4x4 (the road is crap in the Summer and today it's covered with
ice...) to see what can be done. Power is still on at the house.
In a forest full of trees, he's hit the only available power pole and it's
lying on the ground when we arrive on the scene.
The road to the house is blocked with live power lines and the bride, her
mother, HER mother, and my wife are minutes from the scene.
T-65 minutes and counting.
The Sheriff arrives down the road but can't come up because his car won't go
on the road.
The fire company arrives.
The ambulance arrives (nobody's hurt, thankfully)
We hear that the power is now off at the house.
I took the 4x4 to the main road, traveling over the gas-pipeline that runs
past the house.
The bride's party arrives, seeing the police and I explain the situation.
They can scarcely believe my tale.
Others are beginning to arrive so we ferry them up the pipeline in the 4x4s.
Make-up is hard to apply in a home with no lights.
Hair can not be curled.
Toilets can't be flushed because the home has a well and no power to pump
the water.
The photographer shoots the photos of the bride and her party preparing.
It's not like he's going anywhere, his Jeep is totaled.
T-10 minutes and I'm still at the road, waiting for guests who might be
late. I'm wearing Levi's and a T-shirt.
at T-5 I'm hauling booty back to the house. I get dressed in a suit and tie
faster than ever before.

The wedding goes off with almost no hitches. (no matches are around to light
the unity candle...)
I shot video (conscripted). I shot some photos but my kids later made fun
of my recharging AF280T...
The photographer rode with us to town for the reception.
He was thoroughly mortified but very relieved that he'd been stranded out in
the woods with a bride and family whose power he knocked-out right before
the wedding and we didn't even kill him.

He offered the kind neighbor lady who's telephone he'd used to call us a
major hook-up on her daughters' senior photos.
He'd been engaged to make photos of the wedding and provide the images at
the lowest cost possible. I think he's going to give my sister a major
hook-up as well.

I was really amused by the whole situation. My sister was alright and not
terribly off-put. the power was on again by the time we returned from the
reception.

The photographer shall remain nameless here. It really wasn't his fault.
It was NOT Tom VanVeen :)

Thanksgiving

2007-11-22 Thread cbwaters
It's Thanksgiving day here in America.
Yesterday was the busiest travel day of the year (or Sunday will be... it's
neck and neck). All the airports and highways are usually clogged to the
breaking point or beyond. Family members across our nation were stressed to
the max trying to get their herds and shit together to make the trip to
Grandma's or Aunt's house to have a family gathering that can be one of the
best days of the year.

Accidents happen. Weather happens. Cars break down. People get drunk.
Inter-family fights that can cause rifts that last years or for
ever...happen. People who have nobody might eat TV dinners alone. We
Americans have hundreds of thousands or troops overseas. They and their
loved ones are sad today and probably more than a little afraid.

Holidays cover the whole spectrum.

But there's turkey, stuffing , green bean casserole, cranberries and of
course the NFL. So it's not all bad right?

I had the turkey feast with my family last night. I'm working tonight
because the Falcons (Atlanta's pro football team) have a game. It's the
first time in my 35 years that I've not had turkey, family and football all
together on this day. It's a little weird. But I cant *really* complain.
I have a job that pays alright, a home that's warm or cool as the weather
demands, more turkey than I can eat (where are those leftovers anyway?), and
lots of family who love me.

It's tradition on Thanksgiving to take stock of the things you're thankful
for.

I'm thankful for you lot. Admittedly, you're not in the top tier on my list
evil grin Family and love take that spot pretty well. But my friends on
this list and others on the internet are a nice piece of life.

So thanks guys and gals for being there, being funny, being thoughtful (yes,
really), and being friendly (mostly).

Cheers.

Very nice colors and tones, a little darker in the foliage (details
tend to mush together) than I'd prefer.

The cropping is a little too tall/oblong to my eye. Trimming a little
off the bottom and about twice that off the top might improve it,
 something to try anyway.

I pitched the Epson POS

2007-11-19 Thread cbwaters
I've ranted about my dissatisfaction with my Epson stylus photo 925 before.
I replaced it on Saturday.
We had tickets to see the Police last night. We'd purchased the tickets
online so I had to print them out. I did this as soon as we made the
purchase but something was up and it printed all goofy so we couldn't read
the important information (like where to sit). I waited until last week to
decide to print them again but then we were out of paper.
Wife got us some paper on Saturday morning so I tried printing but guess
what? It's out of black ink!
No way I was paying for ink again. That thing had me up the wall and this
was the last straw.

So now I have a HP that scans and copies (Photosmart c6280). It's not rated
too high on cnet but meh, who knows? It can hardly be worse. It has six
ink cartridges so, presuming they are actually available separately, I can
just buy blue if that's what's gone... we'll see.

Now... I really need to figure out how to calibrate and profile so I can
print some decent photos. Maybe there's an online tutorial or something
somewhere?

Cory
has an Epson for sale. :)

Christian, they were bloody fantastic.

The opening act, as it happens, was Fiction Plane. They were pretty good
too. they're a trio with Sting's son as the base player and by some cosmic
stretch of the imagination, he's the singer... Wonder where on Earth they
got that idea.

PESO: Lighthouse

2007-11-19 Thread cbwaters
This is the lighthouse in Marquette, MI. Some of you may have seen this
house before but I've never seen a shot from this direction. I guess I was
probably trespassing on federal property :)

Anyway, taken with the K10, the DA 18-55, my tripod, and maybe a polarize.

It looks a little different online that it did when I was messing with it in
the computer, but that's nothing new.

 Hi all,

Thought I'd just drop by to say hi, since I happen to be in the
 neighbourhood.

Around here we are currently having typical late fall weather - rainy,
windy, decreasing daylight and some (quickly disappearing)snow falling.
Temperature still a few degrees above Celsius zero though.

Although I haven't been posting in a long time I've still stayed
 subscribed.
It's nice to see that this list continues to be a good one, providing good
advice on all aspects of photography as well as being a generally friendly
community, the occasional and obviously inevitable personal thrifts aside.
Good to see so many old-timers still around, good to see new members
 having
 joined.

I haven't had the time to follow everyone's work as posted in PESOS,
 GESOS,
the PUG etc. but still it is inspiring to follow how much members continue
to work on improving their shooting.

As some of you may recall, I'm now shooting Canon since going digital two
 years back.

Last winter my father passed away at old age after a number of years of
declining health. He left me (and my sister) some funds, why I've had the
opportunity to invest in some additional photo equipment.
I've bought some good lenses and accessories, the 40D camera (keeping the
20D as a second), some studio equipment, a good flatbed scanner (Epson
V700), printers as well as having upgraded my computer etc..

By all this it feels like a new start in many ways. I will be able to work
at a more professional level and hopefully in the long run make
 investments
 pay.

I'll be back with some questions in separate messages.

 Till later,
 Lasse

 Hi Dave -

I'm about 45 minutes from GR and Holland.

The waterfront in Holland offers a lot of good photo
ops. The city is built around a good sized lake that
connects to Lake Michigan. There is a pretty
distinctive lighthouse - 'Big Red' where the lakes
join. The lighthouse is on the south side of the
channel, but is best shot from the north, looking
across the channel. There's a state park there with
some low dunes, woods, beach stuff.

Grand Haven, about 30 minutes to the north, has a good
size lighthouse as well. Very nice boardwalk along the
beach that runs along another channel from the
renovated city center all the way through another good
sized state park. There's a Coast Guard station there
and the opportunity to catch the cutters in action.

To the south of Holland - another half hour - is
Saugutuck, an artsy lakefront community with one of
the biggest and nicest beaches / lake shore parks in
 the state.

Weather along the lake is always unpredictable. There
is little color change here so far this year - very
late season this year. The woods along the lake always
change late - so I doubt that you'll see many peak
color areas next week. I was shooting in the Allegan
Forest yesterday - it pushes right up within 20 miles
of Holland. Aside from the sumac and some weedy trees,
it was as green as late July.

Here's a shot of the Holland lighthouse -

 http://www.markcassino.com/galleries/lighthouses/020901.htm

 And Grand Haven -

 http://www.markcassino.com/galleries/lighthouses/0308l01.htm

Oh yeah - sunsets along the lake can be nice as well.

Re: Culling and Editing (Long)

2007-10-10 Thread cbwaters
Doug,
I'd add that you're taking pictures of an event so the end-product should
represent either the whole event or all of some aspect of the event.

It's quite important to tailor the product to the consumer. Like you said,
the local SCCA, who provided the corner workers, is looking for pictures of
their people and maybe some overall event representation shots. The winning
cars (I didn't attend and haven't watched it on Tivo yet so no spoilers,
eh?), and maybe a spectacular wreck like you captured last year.
But what's the point of the other gallery you're working on? Is it to
showcase you're work to prospective employers? For you and your other nut?
(that's a not very inside joke, y'all) or to bring home to mom?

You could end-up making several galleries to suit all your needs.

As for size... well that depends on how many great shots you got. You could
make a gallery that included shots of every car but that would be too big to
wade through.
I've made some that seemed too small for the occasion (06 GFM but I didn't
get many good shots) and one that was arguably too many shots (07 GFM).
Ultimately it's all about how you like it and how your consumer likes it.
Clear as mud, right?

What I've been doing is coming back to those from time to time

move a few to the keep pile, and the rest I leave where they are.
Sometimes this takes several passes, and I usually give it enough time
that the images aren't fresh in my mind when I restart the culling
 process.

 Hmmm. I guess I should've mentioned that I'm often on a deadline,
though sometimes self-imposed. For example, the Petit le Mans ran
October 3-6. I shot it uncommitted as well as uncredentialed, so no
one was expecting any product from me. The deadline-to-printer for my
main consumer, however, is tomorrow, 10 October.

Luckily, they primarily want shots that feature corner marshals. So
that meant only dealing with about 25% of all of the shots to begin
with. But I'll still have to go back to the other 75%, and soon.
Anyway, it took a full ten or twelve hours to do the post and upload the
results for the consumer to access. I've got more than three times that
for the remaining 75% due to details.

OTOH, I have the notion to go through all of the motorsports shots, in
particular, and create a portfolio. Now /that/ is a difficult weeding
out process. And it brings the characteristics of the gallery
questions to the forefront, too. And it's wholly unconstrained by time.

Hey. They probably ran it through C-41 chemicals. I've found that if
you're not giving them color print film, it's best not to even talk to
the person behind the counter. More often than not, especially at chain
stores, they don't have a clue. Their employer should take a few
minutes to explain to them that there is more than one type of film.
They apparently can't be bothered to do this.

Just put it in the envelope, make some notes like Ektachrome! Process
E-6 in the little box at the bottom, and drop it in the bin. If you
have to hand it over to the guy behind the counter, make sure he knows
that you don't want it processed there and that it should be sent out.

G'day All,

While in North America I had to get a shot of a Bald Eagle. Lucky for
me GFM had one in stock :-)

On the Friday Saturday I didn't have much luck. I got lots of shots,
but nothing I'd admit to. Then on Sunday Cory I started to fall
asleep during one of the presentations so we headed down to the
enclosures to see what was happening there. Despite my hardware
limitations (next time I'm bringing something longer :-) I managed to
get this one that I'm quite pleased with (~150kb):

It's clichéd, but I don't care. I got my eagle :-)

Any and all comments welcome.

I guess the bottom line is that dedicated by itself is
 an empty phrase.
dedicated is not an absolute notion, but a relative one.
it is relative to a (family) of camera body(s).

Dedicated is an absolute term, and means that the flash will communicate
with the camera body to set the shutter speed and aperture (in the case of
 programmed exposure cameras).
This is by no means an empty phrase, though you probably would have needed
to be around the camera industry 25 or so years ago to know what the
 original meaning was.

A manual flash is a single output unit which only communicates output
 triggering with the camera.
An auto flash is a variable output unit which only communicates output
 triggering with the camera.
A dedicated flash communicates shutter speed and aperture setting
information with the camera, and causes the camera to set the shutter
 speed
to X-sync and sets the aperture to match the flash output range.
A TTL flash communicates flash output with the camera for the purpose of
 regulating output.
A dedicated TTL flash communicates shutter speed and aperture setting
information with the camera to set the shutter speed to X-sync and sets
 the
aperture to match the flash output range and communicates flash output
 with
the camera for the purpose of regulating output.
Recently, as cameras have thunderbirded, and morphed into lens based
computer systems, the method of communication had changed, but the
principles haven't changed all that much.

 Now you know.

Re: Thinking of AF280T flash

Boris,
I have both the AF 200T and the 280. They both seem to work well in their
auto setting with my K10. Of course, TTL is out, but I think I used them
mostly in auto on the *istD anyway.

Subject: Thinking of AF280T flash

 Hi!

I have AF220T unit which is a good flash, but it can only give me a
full discharge on K10D. I don't want to buy either 540th or 360th
flashes. They are too expensive and 360th does not swivel.

It seems that AF280T has both manual control on the power of discharge
and its own light sensor. Do you think it would be a reasonable flash
for K10D (in fully manual mode) that both tilts and swivels and can
measure light on its own for better exposure?

Anyone on the list using AF280T with their K10D? Anyone willing to enable
 me?

 Thanks.

Re: Thinking of AF280T flash

2007-09-24 Thread cbwaters
Sorry for the late responses, I see you've gotten some answers already. I
had to go to work today so I'm a little slow on the reply.

When I say it works well, I mean that I generally get decently exposed
pictures when I use the flash on my camera.

In Auto Green or Red, the flash chooses the appropriate aperture. I
sometimes change the shutter speed or aperture to get the exposure I want.

I haven't used the manual modes on the flash because it's a bit out of my
depth, sadly.

I use no gear between the camera and flash. Pentax told me that this flash
was ok with this body.

Cory, when you say work well you mean that flash measures the light
on its own and it gives correct exposure as a result, right? If so,
how does flash knows which aperture I chose?

 Thanks.

There are a couple of us here.
Doug Franklin and Maybe Evan Hanson(?)

We're rubbish at getting together though.
I'd love to make an attempt to have dinner of coffee or whatever though so
let me know when you're going to be here and we'll see what we can do.

We'll be in Atlanta for a family wedding in October. We will most
likely be busy the entire time but we *might* have some free time on
Thursday afternoon/evening. Are there any Pentax folks down there?
