I have just sent you that info, with the (new 500Kb size) image attached, using

I may have a clue why it failed, I noticed the image originally submitted, was
over 600Kb in size, so may have been rejected because of that …

Well, that seems to have happened this time.

I sent in a Lioness with cub, in golden-hour light, on the 21st of January, and
I’m pretty sure I got a confirmation, but no show …

The same image is in my own gallery, should be visible at:

than he looks :-)

I notice that I forgot to put more detail on where the shot of mine was
taken - though I think many of you know.. Canyonlands NP, Utah.  The

Green river converges with the Colorado a bit further downstream.

Ann, a few weeks ago there was a news item about the Alaskan National guard
relocating the bus that was the central location in the movie “Into the Wild”.
Over the years it had become a destination point for travelers and had cost
several hi cost rescues and several deaths. No mention in the article about
where it was relocated to.

One of my best friends was a state court judge. He took a trip to Alaska
with his son, and went hiking and fishing in the back country for a week.
One day, a Helicopter flew over them, Then again, lower, Then, a third
time. Finally, the helicopter landed in front of them and the park ranger
inside asked them to get inside. After they took off, he circled to show
them a brown bear that had been tracking them for over an hour. He moved
them to a safer location and took off.

Your book will be something to see, Dan. Closest I will ever get to that
lot. Pity you haven't been to Africa - there are Ruwenzori, Kilimanjaro
& Kenya all in E Africa. The glaciers of Kilimanjaro are now almost
non-existent. Nothing to speak of in SA. The Boy Scouts went to
Kilimanjaro from Rhodesia on the back of a 5 ton truck in the 1950's. I

Re: February PUG is up

2021-02-05 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
My post a few minutes ago was flagged as being too large. Here is what I
said (without the quotes of prior posts):

Ann, we were at Portage Glacier in late June 1992. Greg's HS graduation
gift was a trip to Alaska. NO cruise ship; 12 landings and take-offs; 4
train trips; two van tours; and two one-day sails, one on Prince William
Sound close and personal to the glaciers and one into the Kenai Fjords,
plus 980 miles in a rental car, three hikes, and a white water raft trip
out of Denali. Lee was teaching Earth Science then, and she wanted to be
north of the Arctic Circle for the summer solstice. We celebrated it on
the shores of the Bering Sea.

We saw the video presentation in the Portage visitor center, after which
they opened the curtains and the glacier was RIGHT THERE. Greg and I
climbed up on it a bit, searching in vain for ice worms. Now, one has
to take a boat from that visitor center across the lake to even glimpse the
glacier! Climate change is a bitch!

We got so close to Blackstone Glacier that the waves from calving ice
tossed our boat about like a toy. Blackstone was (then at least) one of
the few Alaska glaciers that was still growing.

As to Denali (or Mt McKinley), it is usually shrouded in clouds. I had to
argue with the train company and insisted on taking the train both north
from Anchorage to Denali NP and again south back to anchorage. We never
got a clear view of Denali on the way up, or during our three days in the
park, but coming back to Anchorage it was out there in all its glory. Greg
and I went into the space between the cars to get a better photo
opportunity. We got a fairly good image, but nothing to compare with
Stan's!

I am working on a photo book of a collection of my favorite mountains,
including Denali, Fuji, the Matterhorn, the Jungfrau, the Eiger, Mt
Washington, Rainier, Mt St Helens, Devils Tower, and, of course, El Capitan
and Half Dome.

Re: February PUG is up

2021-02-04 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, again, Brian, for all your hard work on behalf of the group.
Another great job!

It is an interesting and diverse gallery, with a lot of top images. My
personal favorites are:

1. Denali, by Stan Halpin is a clear and well-composed portrayal of one of
my favorite mountains, and one of those most difficult to photograph
(probably second only to Fujisan).
2. Insignificant Landscape, by Darren Addy is a startling image with
incredible light and dramatic shadow. Really belongs on the wall.

I was also moved by the Lonely Icelandic Pony by Henk Terhell. What a
story that image tells. Ann's image of Portage Glacier brings back
wonderful memories of that magical venue; I understand that it is now only
a shadow of its former glory due to the ravages of climate change.

Congratulations to all who participated in this truly excellent gallery!

Apparently so :-)

The car in my image was placed on the Sydney Opera House forecourt and a large
crane used to drop the boulder - to the amusement of a large crowd, I
understand. The whole thing was then moved to its present location.

Thanks again Brian for carrying on with the PUG!
This month - all good! Jan’s ball players, Don’s cross generational shot, and
P.J.’s rock I thought were particularly impressive pieces of art.

Brian, your crushed car reminded me of similar but very different sculpture I
saw in a mall in Amsterdam: a spherical red VW. Was it a metal sphere mocked up
somehow to look like a VW? Or in fact a VW that had been crushed in some large
metal press? In any case, there are at least two sculptors in the world who
have it in for poor innocent little red cars…

I love that it is so varied! after I submitted mine I remembered I had
technically better stuff of a couple of other sports and from that event
too - Actually have attended a rodeo, certainly horse shows way way
back (but no good photos).

Bong's is stunning work (big surprise there) but it is posed. For this
theme Phillip's intense Australian Football shot made the deepest
impression.. and
Larry Wilkin's Beautiful Game came in next .. but liked the whole
gallery a lot, even though I'm not a team sports fan really.

February PUG is Up - All Aboard1!

2012-02-08 Thread Brian Walters

G'day all

There was a late rush of submissions this month, giving us 26 themed
images and a very nice bird of prey in the Open Gallery.

As usual it's difficult to pick favourites as the theme has been
interpreted widely. I especially like Dario's high contrast black and
white as well as Dave's sepia toned siding and PJ's almost monochrome
shot of an old set of locomotive driving wheels. Steve Sharpe's
freight driving through the Canadian winter is very dramatic.

A high standard throughout - hope we can keep it up for the rest of 2012.

As usual you'll find the gallery here:

The main requirements are:

There was a late rush of submissions this month, giving us 26 themed images
and a very nice bird of prey in the Open Gallery.

As usual it's difficult to pick favourites as the theme has been interpreted
widely.  I especially like Dario's high contrast black and white as well as
Dave's sepia toned siding and PJ's almost monochrome shot of an old set of
locomotive driving wheels.  Steve Sharpe's freight driving through the
 Canadian winter is very dramatic.

A high standard throughout - hope we can keep it up for the rest of 2012.

Ann, it still is a station, sorta. Amtrak is in the basement, a small waiting
room and ticket counter near the tracks. The main building is now a Science
Museum, a nice restaurant and then some restaurant spaces that host a series of
failing entrepreneurs who haven't figured out that sales volume is important.
'Tis a beautiful space that has outlived its purpose. When Meg was serving in
Jeff City 10-12 years ago, she would come home by train Thursday or Friday
nights, I would meet her at the train, we'd have a late dinner there . . .
good times.

Yecch! It's been incredibly boring in the Pacific NorthWest this winter. Worst
I've heard is the staccato sounds of a 15 minute hailstorm on the roof, but it
was so warm that by the time I got out there, it was mostly melted or slush.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for a reversal of that trend in the next three
weeks. And look through my archives, I suppose.
