Just a few things I've found this weekend @ Home Depot/Lowes a. 5x7 Aluminum Step Flashing 10 pieces ~2.00 (85-068) (roofing Dept) nice flat rather thin aluminum pieces(Amerimax Home Products) too thick for good pinholes but flexible enough to play with. Also real good for doing modern tintypes with Liquid Photo Emulsion. Make sure you get a pack that isn't bent or creased... b. Really nice large trays cheep. Look for Refrigerator trays. I guess people put their refrigerators in them to stop condensation from running on the floor. They are a few inches hi and bigger than the size of the footprint of a large refrigerator. The are less than $10 each. Nice for processing that really big paper negative.. c. Bellow Patching compound. Equinox Photographic - equi...@pond.net . Put it on with a small brush or Q-Tip. Flexible seal...just nice stuff. (not at HD/Lowes..) well enough rambling hope this helps someone. KOPH'n andy

Anyone care to enlighten us with some expertise? The main factor when considering coverage is focal length. Thus, the accepted photographs will be seen by thousands of people all across the country and entrants will have a tangible benefit from the competition. Also, the prize-winning photographers will be chosen for an exhibition at the photography gallery of The University of the Arts, Philadelphia. Because their work was seen in The Photo Review, past winners have been given one-person exhibitions, have had their work reproduced in other leading photography magazines like DoubleTake, and have sold their work to collectors throughout the country. $1,000.00 in cash prizes will be awarded. An entry fee of $25 for up to three prints or slides, and $5 each for up to two additional prints or slides, entitles all entrants to a copy of the catalogue. Subject: [pinhole-discussion] Using photo paper in film holders Greetings, This is my first post. Been following for a few months and getting encouragment to continue my pinhole endeavors. I have a Besseler cardboard 120 pinhole camera that I have used on and off, and am now ready to venture into the world on homemade cameras. The Besseler takes great shots, but is a little light in weight and hard to steady unless left alone on the ground or strapped to a tripod. I have a Bender 4x5 kit my brother gave me and I want to make an 8x10 and use film holders for both. My question is can I use photo paper in a film holder? I'm just getting into darkroom work and would like to start off slow by using paper instead of film. I've never used a film holder and am currently looking to get one to study it and take dimensions for building the camera. Going to make the 8x10 from 1/4in ply. Working on a camlock system to lock and seal the holder against the back of the camera. Saw the one listed in a link either here or on the forum with the swing up door on the back - that looks simple enough to make too. Any suggestions would be great. Also, I'm planning to use .001 brass shim stock for the pinhole. Any disadvantages with oxidation of the brass? I imagine stainless would be best, but the brass was easy to get and cheap. Hopefully I'll have one of the cameras by April for the Pinhole Day activities. I wish I could get my camera could go down to 25 mm. Mark, if you want to trade... Personally, I think tabletop could get pretty interesting. What equipment are you employing, that you can do this? That's a separation of 1 lousy inch from pinhole to film plane, isn't it? I'd love to try that myself. My monorail and bag bellows **AND** recessed lens board allow me a fat, gross, long-length 50 mm. What is your trick? Okay, another dumb question. With that kind of coverage on tabletop, it kind of seems like you're going to get the doorway behind you in the image, plus six miles down the length of the hallway, to say nothing of your own entire carcass. So I'm kind of wondering, why are you working with 25 mm? That it distorts, would be one good reason. But you'll get distortion with 40-60 mm, won't you? Do you have to stick to 25 mm? If I didn't like it that I was getting so much into the frame, that probably would be my first point of reassessment. Give yourself some bellows. I mean, unless you can position your camera so it's a quarter of an inch from your subject matter. I tried that recently w/ table top myself. The camera actually cast a shadow onto my subject. I'm not sure what Yahoo has to do with it either(?). As the unnamed person to whom you refer, I will respond. I would have sent Joaquin an email, but there was no link to do so. I still do not know how to contact him through the website. Oftentimes people here post URLs to sites that they have created and images they are newly offering. The comments here are constructive and helpful. When giving opinions, some of us want to help the individual display their offerings in the best possible light, thus the comments about the site design. When I feel that one could better show what they have to offer, I present my opinion. A person with the greatest images in the world with an unusable website will disappoint, and be disappointed. I offered to the site designer an opinion that a link that takes one to a confusing JavaScript (not Java) prompt, as opposed to a page with the link's description, would yield lost sales. The designer of the camera is not being well server by the designer of the site. Certainly, this is information that Joaquin would like to have, as it would be unfortunate to have such an interesting design not be successful due to a failure by a Webmaster. Joaquin did indeed contact me (thanks Joaquin), so I was able to get some information from him. However, my feeling is that people find it helpful to receive feedback on all aspects of their presentation. For those photographers out there who are working on their own websites, they can only be commended for their efforts, and thanked for sharing their vision. For those camera designers who are depending upon someone else to present their wares to the world, I have a much hasher view when I see that their webmaster's design is more about their design, and less about the camera's design. Subject: Re: [pinhole-discussion] large format ortho Hi: By providing a longer range and shorter exposure times, preflashing the film allows ortho to record shadow details much more effecctively. I use an enlarger, and an exposure timer to do this. Its just about the only thing I use an enlarger for now :) I set the enlarger so that it will expose an area larger than the film I use. I stop it down. To determine the flash duration I did a series of test exposures until I found the longest exposure that would NOT fog the film once it was developed. With my setup and developer its around 12 seconds. If you don't have an enlarger you may be able to do something like turn on a very dim light - a 7 watt nightlight or something like that for a few seconds. You essentially have to be able to illuminate the film under a very low light level for an accurate amount of time. The amount of time is determined by finding the longest exposure the film can tolerate without fogging. If you don't have a really accurate timer, you would have to use a dimmer light source and expose it longer. I could probably get away without using my timer, and use my wrist watch, or count to 10 etc. (all of this can be done under safelight) The film acts like it has a threshold of exposure. No latent image will be formed until the exposure level has surpassed this theshold. For pinhole this means that while taking the picture, some time is spent simply getting past the threshold without recording any image information. If this theshold is surpassed prior to exposure (by pre-flashing) the exposure times will be shorter - resulting in a faster film. ...snip

I'm not clear on what you've got: * 4x5 polaroid single sheet film (where each film is in a separate light tight paper sleeve)-- I think you could fake a back with this type: you dummy up a back where you slide the sheet in, the catch catches on something inside so you can (partly) pull the paper sleeve out, take your exposure, slide the paper sleeve back in, release the catch, pull the whole thing out, and use a rolling pin from the fat end to spread out the chemicals. I got a back to do this for $40 at the last camera show I went to. * 4x5 pack film -- I didn't know they made pack film in this size, but they apparently do! This looks like it would be harder to fabricate -- the pack itself does most of the work (keeping negative positive separate, bringing them together as you pull the tabs out though the rollers) -- but the rollers need to be hard, clean, and pretty precise (right size, right spacing, right tension) to work well, and the places where the tabs pop out would take some thought to dummy up. Some of the cheapie polaroids used spreader bars rather than rollers, and this might be easier to fabricate -- basically it's two smooth slabs of metal held almost, but not quite, together with a heavy spring. The film is pulled through the bars and they pop the chemical pod and spread it out... -- Philip __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Here is what I did to measure the same in my Nikon camera, before I got hold of the Nikon specs: Make a hole 1/2 or so in the center of your bodycao, mount that bodycap on the camera'd body, set the camera for the maximum exposure time it allows (30 secs in my case), press the shutter, take a cotton swab and insert it thru the bodycap hole until it touches the film plane, make a mark on the cotton swab at the height where the pinhole would be installed, remove cotton swab and measure the distance with a rule. Children, don't try that at home!! Nikon cameras have a distance of 46.5mm from the film plane to the lens flange, Canon EOS have a distance of 44mm. What will the optimal pinholediameter be? It depends which formula you use. anywhere from 0.009 to 0.010 would be fine for an optimum pinhole, if that is what you want. Will my built in exposure be able to measure the light and set a correct exposure? It should, under bright light with relatively fast film. It really depend on the EV sensitivity of the EOS meter system. What else should I think of? Stop thinking, do it and try it, it works!! Your memory isn't going to cut it. This way YOU'LL KNOW more than 90% of the other people out there. You'll know, you'll learn and you can put this small problem behind you forever! However, for those who love technical discussions, have fun while the rest of us make pictures. I have just started this practice of keeping notes on every exposure. I have a little black book that I keep with my camera stuff and I write down the date, the subject matter of the exposure (sort of), the subject brightness range, sometimes where I placed zone III and VII (like bottom of tree trunk=III, white cow=VII), and how many seconds or minutes I exposed it for. This really helped when I was trying to figure out the speed of HP5+ for me, and helped me close in on correct development times. One problem I ran into yesterday: I started an exposure around 6:30 pm and according to my calculations it was to be 20 minutes. When I came back 20 minutes later, the scene had changed a lot. I metered again and it was two stops darker in the shadows! So I figured a new time for that amount of light and averaged the two, which turned out to be 80 minutes. Went away and of course it got darker some more while I was gone. It was plumb thick dark when I came back. I developed that film tonight and sure enough, it was underexposed. I guess you could say the moral of the story is, don't try to make a picture when it's getting dark. But, that's when the wind dies down and leaves stop moving around. It would be nice if there was a way to figure exposure when the light is constantly changing. --shannon

[pinhole-discussion] Not necessarily Pinhole but the entire artistic community....
I received this today thought it was important to forward this to the community. A number of us try to either make a living or supplement their living with our art. sorry for the intrusion andy To all artists: About a month ago a few artists were invited by Congressman Rush Holt to attend a meeting in Washington DC to discuss the unfair laws pertaining to artists and especially concerning estate taxes. If an artist dies, under the present law, his or her unsold paintings are given a value, and the estate is taxed accordingly. Before an artist's passing, however, the same work is given no value by the IRS. Also, as you know, if an artist donates a painting to a charity, the artist can only deduct the cost of the paint and paper, but the person who buys the artwork can donate it to another charity and can then legally call it all a tax-deductible expense. It is incredibly unfair! But there is hope! Artists are trying to get support for a new bill which would correct the inequities artists suffer under the present laws. The new law is being introduced by Congressman Nadler of NYC, but it is being held up from a vote in the Ways and Means Committee by Congressman (and Chairman) Bill Thomas of Bakersfield, California, who will not even let the Nadler Bill come up for a vote. It is recommended that artists write: Chairman Bill Thomas, Committee on Ways and Means, 1102 Longworth House Office Building, Washington, DC 20515.

It's jsust that I've been quite busy since April 28, working on this project and other priorities, and I have not had much time to report. In a nutshell, it's worked beyond our expectations. We have a 12 1/2 feet wide by 8 1/2 feet high pinhole image of incredible beauty, probably one of the largest ever made in modern pinhole history. Thanks to the support of Wyndham Montreal, we were able to have a 10th floor room for the WPPD weekend facing one of the most impressive landscape of Montreal, right in the centre of the cultural area. We started setting up our equipment in the room early Saturday afternoon and worked to make the room completely light tight. By midnight we had everything pretty well completed, all we had to do was to lower the 3 strips of 50 by 8 1/2 feet photographic paper (kindly supplied by Ilford Imaging Canada as a full roll of 100 feet) down the frame we had built and open the shutter, to officially start our WPPD2 experiment. We chose a 40 focal length to get as wide angle as possible on the landscape (the image covers from Place Ville Marie to Place des Arts, with the Mount Royal in the background, for anyone familiar with Montreal). We did a bit of a backswing with the frame to extend coverage of the landscape on the side of Place Ville Marie. There was some question over what diameter pinhole to use. The optimal would have been 1.34 mm giving us F/755, much to small given the overcast weather expected for April 28. In the end, I chose 1.8mm diameter, giving us F/564. This is only a few minutes exposure even on paper on a bright sunny day, but under overcast conditions and with reciprocity playing its trick, I knew that this would be relatively safe. In the end, a snow storm forced us to close the shutter around 12:45 on Sunday, earlier than we had anticipated, in order to avoid a white out of the image. While the tests strips we had placed on the extremities of the frame suggested then that we might be underexposed, the centre, by that time was quite over exposed. I guess we had forgotten that we would experience very heavy vignetting with such a short focal length (further compounded by reciprocity failure at the extremities). By Monday morning we were all packed up and leaving the hotel to move on to the next stage: the processing of the paper negative. Given the facilities we were using, we couldn't get started until late evening and we also had to build handmade processing tanks (5 x10 feet) from 2x4 lumber and heavy gauge plastic. We used 100 litters of developer and fix (way too much in retrospect) to fill the trays and unrolled each strip of 50 x 8 1/2 feet into the trays, one after the other, out into a quick stop bath and then into the fix. The negatives were then washed thoroughly and installed back to dry on same the wood frame we had used for exposure at the hotel. The result was just astounding. Imagine a 12 1/2 feet by 8 1/2 feet negative image with incredible details in every areas of the image (you can count the number of chairs on a hidden roof top sundeck of the Museum of Contemporary Arts and see pretty well inside the buildings closeby, enough to count how many chairs there are around the desks or worktables). Every details of the architecture landscape are clearly visible in the image but strangely distorted in some areas of the image through wide angle expansion and in other areas through telephoto compression. Because of the length of the time exposure (a little over 12 hrs), the whole city looks unnaturally empty from the constant agitation surrounding this area as if it had been deserted from all its inhabitants after a major disaster. Only the buildings, the trees, the sign and lamp posts and the cars parked on the street are visible with incredible details. Very daunting. The next stage for us is to do a contact print of the paper negative into a positive image. This is the trickiest part and we are still working on tests strips. We need to illuminate an area 12.5 x 8.5 feet, and there is about 7 stops density difference between the centre of the image (closest to the pinhole) and the edges. At this stage, we are working with a single lamp projector 15 feet above the print and centred just above the zone of heaviest density. I let you imagine the fun of changing contrast filtration between each tests...! The goal is to avoid having to do any burning and dodging by carefully configuring the way the light spreads over the image and to make 11x14 tests strips

To put it another way (perhaps more clearly, perhaps not), it is not about how sharp the photo is and it is not about how unsharp the photo is. What it IS about is what the photo looks like. Sometimes being as sharp as possible helps, sometimes being blurry helps. It is certainly true that the optimal size pinhole is a good starting point, but the photographer may need to use a different size to get the photo they want. Serendipity can be a great creative tool, but using the scientific tools that are available (such as the formulas) can work jus as well from a creative standpoint. Note that I said pinhole photography above. Pinhole camera making is not always the same thing. Often, that IS about getting the sharpest photo possible. That is more of an engineering issue than a creative one. The best answer that I can think of to the question What size pinhole should I put in my camera? is: Use the size that will produce the type of photo that you want. However, we decided several weeks ago not to promote these items ourselves because we did not want to turn pinhole day into a commercial event. At the same time, we wanted to make some items available to those who want them, to commemorate WPPD2. No one should feel that you need to buy any of these items to support pinhole day - that is not an issue. If you would like one of these items for your enjoyment, they are available and of good quality (based on the ones I have bought and others comments). I would like for everyone to know the finances of this. It cost us nothing to set up this service with cafepress.com. Guy Glorieux designed the white t-shirt and I designed the other items. We set the web site with the items and CafePress.com prints items as they are ordered. They seem to do a very good job, but have been a little slow to ship things in the past couple of weeks. For each item sold, we get one dollar, regardless of the item, and they get the rest. The check is sent to me and I'm keeping records of what we receive. So, we're not talking about a lot of money. But, what we receive will be used only for WPPD expenses. And so far, those expenses are very small - domain name registration, and some web server expenses. It is very unlikely we will collect more than our annual expense for the web site. Details of the project can be found at the following URL (Zernike has offerd to build and host the web site which is still in progress): http://www.zeroimage.com/Guy/PinholeHotel.html We will be a team of four photographers. The room will be on the 6th floor, kindly offered by Wyndham Montreal Hotel, for the period from saturday noon to monday noon. This will give us lots of time to do the set-up ahead of time. The image will be printed on Ilford RC VC paper, with a yellow filter on the pinhole. We'll be working with 3 strips of 50 in. x 9 feet from a roll of 100 feet. The pinhole should be about 0.1'' diameter with a focal length of 10 feet. This works out an f-stop of F-1200. With a yellow filter and paper at ISO 3, this should work out to an exposure time of about 1.5 hrs on a sunny day. There are no reciprocity failure charts for paper, but it is just as real as for film. So I'll have to make some tests before next week but I expect to end up with an exposure time of maybe 8-12 hrs. I just hope that it'll be sunny weather outside. If it's rainny, we can either move the paper closer to the window and shorten the focal length to open up the F-stop or work with a larger pinhole diameter and get a somewhat more blurry image. The plan is to calculate the focal length/F-stop based on the weather outside so as to be able to open the shutter at 00:00hr on Sunday April 28 and to let the exposure run until 24:00hr. We'll be using RC paper and, once we have the paper negatives, we'll make a 4' x 8' contact print from each of the three 50'' x 9'. (You soak the paper negative and the unexposed paper positive, squeegee them together and do you exposure). I have not yet got around to making tests but I do not see any major difficulties here, assuming that I managed to get through the first stage of processing the paper negative. We'll be using wallpaper tanks to roll and unroll the paper in the chemistry. Washing and drying will be the tough parts. The final paper negative and positive (3 each) will be mounted on thick board to make a twin triptych - either all 3 positive and all 3 negative or alternating 1 positive and 1 negative. I have been thinking about this before, but never took the time to try it. Now I had to do a print film and used the border of the page for some tests. I only exposed some polaroid pictures until now, so I am not sure if the sharpness actually equals a real hole. But as far as I can tell from the first tests, it seems to work quite well. The good thing about this technique is a) it is very easy to make a perfectly clean hole of exact size b) it is the only way to make holes of other shape, like stars (if you don't have a laser) The way to do it: Use a vector graphics program (like corel draw and many others). Draw a black square of 25*25 cm. Put a white shape in the center of the square, using a size of 1 mm. (I used one dot and two different stars from the wingdings font) Combine the two objects and reduce the whole thing to 2.5*2.5 cm. This way you can be sure that the hole will be 0.1cm . (If you need other sizes, it should be not too difficult to calculate) Then you can duplicate the object as often as the size of the page allows it. Save it as print file and send it to your service bureau. Unfortunately, I don't have much time at the moment for playing around with them, but if somebody else would like to try it: I have made enough filmholes, so that the first 10 people who send me their snail-address can get a set of them. I have the 1200 dpi version of the 2450 with the accessory transparency scanner think it's great. It will do from 35mm to 8x10's (If you have he storage for it).. RE: [pinhole-discussion] Test site -Comcast
Since I've received several comments like this Comcast members get 25mb of online storage that is shared by something called mywebpages myfilelocker. You instantiate them by signing on to Comcast home page http://www.comcast.net/comcast.html with your account name password. The left side sign on box will be replaced with a couple of selection elements including the above 2. Comcast gives you 7 assignable email names I (think) they all get separate spaces...but I haven't confirmed this yet. andy -Original Message- From: pinhole-discussion-admin@p at ???
