Just a few things I've found this weekend @ Home Depot/Lowes

a. 5x7 Aluminum Step Flashing 10 pieces ~2.00 (85-068) (roofing Dept) nice
flat rather thin aluminum pieces(Amerimax Home Products) too thick for good
pinholes but flexible enough to play with. Also real good for doing modern
tintypes with Liquid Photo Emulsion. Make sure you get a pack that isn't
bent or creased...

b. Really nice large trays cheep. Look for Refrigerator trays. I guess
people put their refrigerators in them to stop condensation from running on
the floor. They are a few inches hi and bigger than the size of the
footprint of a large refrigerator. The are less than $10 each. Nice for
processing that really big paper negative..

c. Bellow Patching compound. Equinox Photographic - equi...@pond.net . Put
it on with a small brush or Q-Tip. Flexible seal...just nice stuff. (not at
HD/Lowes..)

well enough rambling hope this helps someone.

Hi all,

Now that WPPD 2003 is now over I want to thank every one that made it
all possible. That not only goes to all the folks you see listed at
http://www.pinholeday.org/gallery/2003/index.php?epage=credits, who
deserve a big round a applause, but every one who submitted a
photograph. I found it hard to believe that there were 1082 submissions
from 43 countries.

Thanks for a great WPPD and see you next year.

James

The camera is said to have a 60mm focal length. Does anyone have
experience with images made that wide, nearly 8.5 inches, from such a
focal lenth (at f/360) on 120 film? Are the edges even useful at that
extreme?

I guess what I'm getting at is this camera a gimmick? Will the user
most likey have to crop only the center portion of the neg. for a
usable image and not really get the full 22cm effect?

What do you think?

Thanks, Andrew

 Andrew Amundsen a...@tcinternet.net wrote (snip):

My inquiry is regarding how an image would look from such a
long neg.? The stated aperture size is f/360. Would the edges
suffer from extreme distortion? I'm surprised that the coverage
would even fill that length of 22cm!?

They share no images produced with said camera so I have
doubts, with my limited understanding of pinhole imagery, to
how good the detail would be at the extremes?

Anyone care to enlighten us with some expertise?

The main factor when considering coverage is focal length. To
get an idea of how a particular FL will cover various formats,
you could make say an 8x10 a camera of the same focal length,
shoot some images, then mask off the negative size you are
 considering, be it 6x6, 6x9, 6x22, 4x5, 5x7, etc.

INFLUENTIAL GALLERIST BILL HUNT TO JURY THE 2003 PHOTO REVIEW
PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

Bill Hunt, the influential Directory of Photography of New York's
Ricco/Maresca Gallery, will be the juror for the 2003 Photo Review
Photography Competition. The Photo Review, a highly acclaimed
critical journal of photography, is sponsoring its 19th annual
photography competition with a difference. Instead of only installing
an exhibit that would be seen by a limited number of people, The
Photo Review will reproduce accepted entries in its Summer 2003
issue. Thus, the accepted photographs will be seen by thousands of
people all across the country and entrants will have a tangible
benefit from the competition.

Also, the prize-winning photographers will be chosen for an
exhibition at the photography gallery of The University of the Arts,
Philadelphia.

Because their work was seen in The Photo Review, past winners have
been given one-person exhibitions, have had their work reproduced in
other leading photography magazines like DoubleTake, and have sold
their work to collectors throughout the country.

$1,000.00 in cash prizes will be awarded.

An entry fee of $25 for up to three prints or slides, and $5 each for
up to two additional prints or slides, entitles all entrants to a
copy of the catalogue. In addition, all entrants will be able to
subscribe to The Photo Review for $30, a 20% discount.

All entries must be received by mail between May 1 and May 15, 2003.

For a prospectus and details, send a self-addressed, stamped
business-size (#10) envelope to: The Photo Review, 140 East
Richardson Avenue, Suite 301, Langhorne, PA 19047. The prospectus may

RE: [pinhole-discussion] Using photo paper in film holders

2003-02-25 Thread andy schmitt
Hey Patrick
Welcome...
Stainless steel isn't the best... Silver then Brass. I don't see .001 silver
in the hobby store so I use brass. It works just fine.

Please look through ebay buy an old Kodak (etc) 8x10 film holder. They are
a pain in the a** to make light tight why reinvent the wheel.. 8o)

Paper works just fine in a negative holder.

You can prototype your design in black foam core gaffers tape.. works fine
you might not even take it to plywood. I say this after not using foam
core myself but what can I say, I'm masochistic.

keep in touch have fun

Subject: [pinhole-discussion] Using photo paper in film holders

Greetings,

This is my first post. Been following for a few months and getting
encouragment to continue my pinhole endeavors. I have a Besseler
cardboard 120 pinhole camera that I have used on and off, and am now
ready to venture into the world on homemade cameras. The Besseler takes
great shots, but is a little light in weight and hard to steady unless
left alone on the ground or strapped to a tripod. I have a Bender 4x5
kit my brother gave me and I want to make an 8x10 and use film holders
for both. My question is can I use photo paper in a film holder? I'm
just getting into darkroom work and would like to start off slow by
using paper instead of film. I've never used a film holder and am
currently looking to get one to study it and take dimensions for
building the camera.

Going to make the 8x10 from 1/4in ply. Working on a camlock system to
lock and seal the holder against the back of the camera. Saw the one
listed in a link either here or on the forum with the swing up door on
the back - that looks simple enough to make too.

Any suggestions would be great. Also, I'm planning to use .001 brass
shim stock for the pinhole. Any disadvantages with oxidation of the
brass? I imagine stainless would be best, but the brass was easy to get
and cheap. Hopefully I'll have one of the cameras by April for the
Pinhole Day activities.

Thanks,
Patrick

description I used on ebay, and if you want to see a photo of it goto,

Up for Bid are Bellows from a copy camera. I believe that these are the
biggest bellows that I have ever seen. The rear opening is 29 and
front is 13. I was unable ot extend them fully, my guess is that will
extend 6 to 8'. When I took the photo they were extended 4'. I believe
that bellows are light tight, but I cannot guarantee it.

A while ago there was a thread about an article by H. D'Arcy Power:
Advanced Pinhole Photography from The Photo Miniature from July 1905.

I got a photocopy through interlibrary loan and created an Adobe
Acrobat document which I've posted on my website
http://idea.uwosh.edu/nick/pinholephoto.htm

I looked into the copyright issue and anything published before 1923 is
in the public domain (http://www.unc.edu/~unclng/public-d.htm) so I'm
pretty sure I'm not infringing anyone's copyright.

I'm afraid it's kind of big, 3.6 MB, but that's not bad for a 46 page
article scanned at high resolution (text and line art at 300 dpi,
images, grey scale at 150 dpi).

I've turned my interlibrary loan wizard loose on the citations he gives
to other works and maybe will get those posted also.

[pinhole-discussion] New find for paper negatives...

2003-02-08 Thread Andy Schmitt
Hi all
As I am known to do, I just purchased 5 rolls of something I had never heard
of from Ebay... 'cause it was cheep!
What I got this time was Kodak Pagi-Set RC Phototypesetting paper. 8x150'
rolls ...
Was I surprised when I noticed it was processed under a #1 (red) safelight.
Stuck it under an 8x10 negative did a test strip processed it in Dektol
1:2. Low behold I actually got a stable image. This stuff is like having
single weight RC paper with a matt finish so...
Looks like paper negative time.
I'll let you know what happens... If you ever get a chance to get some, try
it.

Ow yes... Don't get Linagraph Direct paper... (Cat 198 6520) ... it doesn't
appear to be sensitive to White light at all...man do I have a bunch too...
it comes in 12x400' rolls.
Well enough of this.
Have a great weekend

You're biting off a very big chunk. Taking on a new method, thirty day time

easiest and most foolproof is cyanotype. you will need large format contact
negs for any of these anyway. Cyanotype exposure can be maddening in northen

I've bene getting the BEST mail lately - Thank you to

I just spoke with a gallery owner and showed her my
new series of pinholes I shot while in England. My
boyfriend shot images with a digital camera and we are
trying to have a show that has both our work. It's
actually very interesting to see digital versus
pinhole. The oldest technique and the newest, of the
 same place.

He is going to print them in the most recent
developing practice - like Iris printing, and I want
to do an old process like platinum palladium, or
something along those lines and I'm thinking I want to
print BIG. I want 30x40. But may go 20x24. I think he
 is printing small.

Curious if you know of any workshops in alternative
printing practices that you recommend. I've seen some
 - there is one in Yosemite on Platinum.palladium that
 looks amazing.

I LOVE the collodion look but that's done on the glass
plate before exposure. ( Can you do collodion with a
 pinhole?? )

Any workshop experiences or advice will be great.

I would like to start printing in a month. I just need
to decide which process would look the best for this
type of imagery. Since I was holding the camers for 45
second exposures - the images are pretty soft. and
 have motion to them.

Hello all. I'm a frequent reader/infrequent contributor to this list.
Recently I stumbled upon an interesting 40-page article on Advanced Pinhole
Photography by D'Arcy Power in The Photo Miniature for July, 1905. It turns
out that Power was a member of the Royal Academy of Surgeons and made
significant contributions in general surgery as well as the bibliography of
surgical history. He was born in 1855 and outlived this article by 36
years--a long life. Anyway it is a solid article--a copy of which I'd be
happy to share with folks here if they sent me a note and a return (8x10)
envelope with a few first class stamps on it.
Feel free to contact me if interested.
 Best, John Ptak

One thing I especially like about the super short focal length pinhole is
that it kicks me in the rear with lousy images every time I stand more than
18 from my subject. Using 50mm on a 4x5 means that you run the risk of
having your subject poke you in the eye while you're trying to maneuver
close enough. It also FEELS weird and overbearing to place a 4x5 studio
camera mere inches from something. The whole experience makes for a very
strange, enchanting, but also humbling encounter with reality.

Sounds fantastic! Yesterday I got an idea while I was experimenting w/ the
360 mm pinhole on 4x5. If I held a polaroid at a certain distance that
reproduced the scale of the actual scene, then I figured I'd know how to
frame a shot w/o a polaroid. Next I tried it with a polaroid shot w/ the 50
mm. I couldn't do it, though. As soon as I started holding it close enough,
my ^#%@ nose kept getting in the way. I wish I could get my camera could go
down to 25 mm. Mark, if you want to trade... Personally, I think tabletop
could get pretty interesting. What you want, though, is an empty airline
hangar for a backdrop...

I'll defend a 1 Fl on 4x5. The first camera I ever built had 0.75 Fl and
I've had great fun with it. It has a wonderfully wide acceptance angle and
makes a nice round image on 4x5 film. Placed 0.75 inches away from the
object it gives a life size image.

I need to ask you a dumb question. You are able to get 25 mm of focal
length
on 4x5? What equipment are you employing, that you can do this? That's a
separation of 1 lousy inch from pinhole to film plane, isn't it? I'd love
to
try that myself. My monorail and bag bellows **AND** recessed lens board
allow me a fat, gross, long-length 50 mm. What is your trick?

Okay, another dumb question. With that kind of coverage on tabletop, it
kind
of seems like you're going to get the doorway behind you in the image,
plus
six miles down the length of the hallway, to say nothing of your own
entire
carcass. So I'm kind of wondering, why are you working with 25 mm? That it
distorts, would be one good reason. But you'll get distortion with 40-60
mm,
won't you? Do you have to stick to 25 mm? If I didn't like it that I was
getting so much into the frame, that probably would be my first point of
reassessment. Give yourself some bellows. I mean, unless you can position
your camera so it's a quarter of an inch from your subject matter. I tried
that recently w/ table top myself. The camera actually cast a shadow onto
my
 subject. Impossible.

I am novice pinhole photographer looking for some advice regarding

still life compositions with my 4X5 Pinhole Camera (25mm focal length).

My issue is that I am trying to limit the elements in my composition, but
tend to pick up a significant amount of the surrounding area no mater how
close I am to the still life composition. Is it possible to limit the
surrounding area? I've seen other pinhole still lifes with a limited
composition--perhaps this was accomplished in the darkroom?

Many thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Yes, its hard to tell with out looking at the print, but from my experience
the most easy (not always the cheapest) way to spot a picture would be to

Oftentimes people here post URLs to sites that they have created and images

A person with the greatest images in the world with an unusable website will

I offered to the site designer an opinion that a link that takes one to a

Joaquin would like to have, as it would be unfortunate to have such an
interesting design not be successful due to a failure by a Webmaster.

Joaquin did indeed contact me (thanks Joaquin), so I was able to get some
information from him. However, my feeling is that people find it helpful to
receive feedback on all aspects of their presentation. For those
photographers
out there who are working on their own websites, they can only be commended
for
their efforts, and thanked for sharing their vision. For those camera
designers who are depending upon someone else to present their wares to the
world, I have a much hasher view when I see that their webmaster's design is
more about their design, and less about the camera's design.

I have been a fan of pinhole photography since my college days where I
studied under Wiley Sanderson, Mary Ruth Moore and Dr Robert Nix at the
University of Georgia...Bid deal, I know... I have a 4x5 multi focal length
and a 8x10 that I don't currently us due to not having a darkroom at the
moment...I now typically use a body cap pinhole on my old 35 mm.
My question to the group is...Does anyone use transparency film for pinhole
use and if so, what problems might be associated with that in contrast to
the typical negative film? I ask this because I have seen that the
Ilfochrome or Cibachrome is such the standard for the highest quality color
printing. Any thoughts comments or contusions?

Hi:

By providing a longer range and shorter exposure times, preflashing the
film allows ortho to record shadow details much more effecctively.

I use an enlarger, and an exposure timer to do this. Its just about the
only thing I use an enlarger for now :)

I set the enlarger so that it will expose an area larger than the film I
use. I stop it down.

To determine the flash duration I did a series of test exposures until I
found the longest exposure that would NOT fog the film once it was
developed.

With my setup and developer its around 12 seconds.

If you don't have an enlarger you may be able to do something like turn on
a very dim light - a 7 watt nightlight or something like that for a few
seconds.

You essentially have to be able to illuminate the film under a very low
light level for an accurate amount of time.

The amount of time is determined by finding the longest exposure the film
can tolerate without fogging.

If you don't have a really accurate timer, you would have to use a dimmer
light source and expose it longer.

I could probably get away without using my timer, and use my wrist watch,
or count to 10 etc. (all of this can be done under safelight)

The film acts like it has a threshold of exposure. No latent image will
be formed until the exposure level has surpassed this theshold.

For pinhole this means that while taking the picture, some time is spent
simply getting past the threshold without recording any image information.
If this theshold is surpassed prior to exposure (by pre-flashing) the
exposure times will be shorter - resulting in a faster film.

Hi list,

Finally about to get started building a new darkroom
and need to raise some cash. Thought someone here
might be interested. I have one 25-sheet box of Tri-X
film I'd like to sell. It's factory sealed and been
properly stored (expires December 2003). I'd like to
get $55 for it, buyer pays postage (is it safe to mail
in ordinary mail, I wonder?). Also, I have a nice
Meade 4 telescope with tripod for sale. If interested
in either, contact me off list. Sorry this is off
topic, but thought a pinholer might be able to use the
film. (Both items are in northern California).

Colin

P.S. Also slightly off-topic, but I think there was a
discussion here not too long ago about digital
printing. Just wanted to say that yesterday I saw
actual prints done using the Piezography system (BW)
and the Lightjet system (color) for the first time.
They are simply beautiful. First thing tomorrow
morning I am making an appointment with the local
company doing the work. I want to learn all about it.

I believe the 553 fits a 550 back. They show up on ebay frequently are
WONDERFUL. I like them much more than the single sheet backs the film is
about 1/2 the price of single sheets. I picked up a couple of them so I can
load several type of film...still cheaper than single sheet...
You might find one used at a photo shop. There was a rumor last winter about
the demise of the 550 style of film but my Polaroid rep has assured me it
is false... for what thats worth...

thing, but a homemade Polaroid back presents a bit
 more of a challenge.
..snip..

I'm not clear on what you've got:
* 4x5 polaroid single sheet film (where each film is
in a separate light tight paper sleeve)-- I think you
could fake a back with this type: you dummy up a back
where you slide the sheet in, the catch catches on
something inside so you can (partly) pull the paper
sleeve out, take your exposure, slide the paper sleeve
back in, release the catch, pull the whole thing out,
and use a rolling pin from the fat end to spread out
the chemicals. I got a back to do this for $40 at the
last camera show I went to.

* 4x5 pack film -- I didn't know they made pack film
in this size, but they apparently do! This looks like
it would be harder to fabricate -- the pack itself
does most of the work (keeping negative positive
separate, bringing them together as you pull the tabs
out though the rollers) -- but the rollers need to be
hard, clean, and pretty precise (right size, right
spacing, right tension) to work well, and the places
where the tabs pop out would take some thought to
dummy up. Some of the cheapie polaroids used
spreader bars rather than rollers, and this might be
easier to fabricate -- basically it's two smooth slabs
of metal held almost, but not quite, together with a
heavy spring. The film is pulled through the bars and
they pop the chemical pod and spread it out...

Hi

A friend of mine makes gum, cyanotype and van dyke brown prints with paper
negatives by peeling the paper backing off the resin coating. The image
attaches to the resin and it very thin. You then need to use a frame to
hold it flat during exposure but the exposure times are very reasonable and
the prints are beautiful.

He also has a mate that works in a hospital who gets him boxes of out of
date X-ray duplication film. This stuff is great because you can enlarge
35mm negatives onto 8x10 sheets of this film and end up with large negatives
for contact printing.

Cheers,
Tim

Hi:

you can make cyanotypes from a paper negative. It just takes a long time.
A friend of mine has done this - he needed to expose these for three hours
in the sun.

You could try waxing the paper negatives to make them more transparent.
People have had success using melted parafin wax.

How do I measure the distance from the filmplane til the pinhole?

Here is what I did to measure the same in my Nikon camera, before I got hold
of
the Nikon specs: Make a hole 1/2 or so in the center of your bodycao, mount
that bodycap on the camera'd body, set the camera for the maximum exposure
time
it allows (30 secs in my case), press the shutter, take a cotton swab and
insert
it thru the bodycap hole until it touches the film plane, make a mark on the
cotton swab at the height where the pinhole would be installed, remove
cotton
swab and measure the distance with a rule.

Children, don't try that at home!!

Nikon cameras have a distance of 46.5mm from the film plane to the lens
flange,
Canon EOS have a distance of 44mm.

What will the optimal pinholediameter be?

It depends which formula you use. anywhere from 0.009 to 0.010 would be
fine
for an optimum pinhole, if that is what you want.

Will my built in exposure be able to measure the light and set a
 correct exposure?

It should, under bright light with relatively fast film. It really depend
on
the EV sensitivity of the EOS meter system.

What else should I think of?

Stop thinking, do it and try it, it works!!

I've often told beginners to not be too surprised if close up shots
of plants don't work out, because even the slightest breeze will move
flowers enough too blur them with a long pinhole exposure.

Last night sitting on my back porch in the heat, wishing for a cool
breeze, I realized that it actually was absolutely still. This Peace
rose had been blooming it's little heart out and had some huge
honkin' blossoms way out at the end of some pretty long stems. Common
sense told me it would never work, but fortified by the shorter
exposures available on a new wide angle (f125, 4 x 5, 2.5 inch F.L.)
camera, I gave it a shot. That late in the evening it took a four
minute exposure. The picture is uploaded to the discussion list
gallery at
http://www.???/discussion/upload/gallery2002.php?pic=dvoracek
_rose.jpg

I will fess up to giving it one pass at sharpening in Photoshop, but
I do that with every picture I scan, pinhole or not.

I still can't believe that flower held that still for that long.

I have just started this practice of keeping notes on every exposure. I have
a little black book that I keep with my camera stuff and I write down the
date, the subject matter of the exposure (sort of), the subject brightness
range, sometimes where I placed zone III and VII (like bottom of tree
trunk=III, white cow=VII), and how many seconds or minutes I exposed it
for. This really helped when I was trying to figure out the speed of HP5+
for me, and helped me close in on correct development times.

One problem I ran into yesterday: I started an exposure around 6:30 pm and
according to my calculations it was to be 20 minutes. When I came back 20
minutes later, the scene had changed a lot. I metered again and it was two
stops darker in the shadows! So I figured a new time for that amount of
light and averaged the two, which turned out to be 80 minutes. Went away
and of course it got darker some more while I was gone. It was plumb thick
dark when I came back. I developed that film tonight and sure enough, it
was underexposed.

I guess you could say the moral of the story is, don't try to make a picture
when it's getting dark. But, that's when the wind dies down and leaves stop
moving around. It would be nice if there was a way to figure exposure when
the light is constantly changing.

donates a painting to a charity, the artist can only deduct the cost of
the
paint and paper, but the person who buys the artwork can donate it to
another charity and can then legally call it all a tax-deductible
expense.
It is incredibly unfair! But there is hope!
Artists are trying to get support for a new bill which would correct
the inequities artists suffer under the present laws. The new law is being
introduced by Congressman Nadler of NYC, but it is being held up from a
vote
in the Ways and Means Committee by Congressman (and Chairman) Bill Thomas
of
Bakersfield, California, who will not even let the Nadler Bill come up for
a
vote. It is recommended that artists write:
Chairman Bill Thomas, Committee on Ways and Means, 1102 Longworth
House
 Office Building, Washington, DC 20515.

See the link above for a suggestion that exposing pinhole with nothing
but UV makes a sharper photo. I've been thinking about buying one of the
appropriate filters from Edmund Scientific and trying UV pinhole this
summer. Has anyone done it?

Thanks for the tip, Andy, but I think you are missing my point.

Which is: the 4 x 5 enlargers I've used insist that 4 x 5 is the image
as framed in a negative carrier. Once you get away from the negative
carrier, and try to print the whole negative, you'll find that the
diameter of the circular housing of the enlarger is too small to cover
the whole sheet, and you'll end up losing the corners of the negative.

At least that's been my experience on three different enlargers, and
I'm keen to know if there are 4 x 5 enlargers that have a large enough
head to encircle the whole 4 x 5 negative.

As to a carrier, I just got two sheets of glass, had the edges smoothed
out by the supplier, and hinged them with gaffers tape. That part
worked fine. I was just losing my corners (and my mind).

Another reason why digital is looking better and better.

Thanks, Eric

get yourself some anti-Newton glass bigger than the negative 1/4 marine
plywood (no voids). Cut out the wood bigger than the negative (but smaller
than the glass...) on 2 pieces. Cut the wood to fit your enlarger. I would
flat black the wood after you smooth it out.
If you want to be fancy you could route out the plywood so the glass is
nestled inside it on each side... a hinge to keep it aligned might be a good
thought too...
I'm going to do one this summer so let me know how you come out... I'll do
the same.

I shoot 4 x 5. I like printing the whole sheet of film, that is, all
the way to the edges, including where the film holder shows and the
identifying notches. But on most of the enlargers I've tried, including
Omegas, it's impossible to get the whole sheet. I've rigged up a glass
sandwich to hold the negative, but the apparatus still manages to roundly
clip off the corners.

Are there any 4 x 5 enlargers that will handle the full negative or do I
need to go to a larger size?

Thanks in advance, Eric

I agreee totally about getting an Omega D series enlarger. I've had a D2V
for about 20 years now and it's still great. Just found a point source head
for it and will be printing electron microscope negatives. Extremely
versatile assortment of heads: cold light, condenser, color fits many needs,
worth the cost. IF you want to enlarges neg to larger dimensions get the
longer column.
Always good to look locally if you can to avoid higher shipping costs. Save
the $ and invest in a good lens. Look for a package deal as the additional
parts- negative holders, lens cones, replacement condensers can get a bit
pricey if bought separately. I found it cheaper to have a machine shop cut
me neagive carriers than pay the photo-shop price.
Good luck,

Well, it will be the size of your film cannister. Of course, you can

Do you mean, the image diameter will be the same as the diameter of the film

Subject: [pinhole-discussion] The Wyndham Montreal Pinhole Camera
Project

Jeff,

You have not missed any postings on the subject. It's jsust that I've
been quite busy since April 28, working on this project and other
priorities, and I have not had much time to report.

In a nutshell, it's worked beyond our expectations. We have a 12 1/2
feet wide by 8 1/2 feet high pinhole image of incredible beauty,
probably one of the largest ever made in modern pinhole history.

Thanks to the support of Wyndham Montreal, we were able to have a 10th
floor room for the WPPD weekend facing one of the most impressive
landscape of Montreal, right in the centre of the cultural area. We
started setting up our equipment in the room early Saturday afternoon
and worked to make the room completely light tight. By midnight we had
everything pretty well completed, all we had to do was to lower the 3
strips of 50 by 8 1/2 feet photographic paper (kindly supplied by
Ilford Imaging Canada as a full roll of 100 feet) down the frame we had
built and open the shutter, to officially start our WPPD2 experiment.

We chose a 40 focal length to get as wide angle as possible on the
landscape (the image covers from Place Ville Marie to Place des Arts,
with the Mount Royal in the background, for anyone familiar with
Montreal). We did a bit of a backswing with the frame to extend
coverage of the landscape on the side of Place Ville Marie.

There was some question over what diameter pinhole to use. The optimal
would have been 1.34 mm giving us F/755, much to small given the
overcast weather expected for April 28. In the end, I chose 1.8mm
diameter, giving us F/564. This is only a few minutes exposure even on
paper on a bright sunny day, but under overcast conditions and with
reciprocity playing its trick, I knew that this would be relatively
safe.

In the end, a snow storm forced us to close the shutter around 12:45 on
Sunday, earlier than we had anticipated, in order to avoid a white out
of the image. While the tests strips we had placed on the extremities
of the frame suggested then that we might be underexposed, the centre,
by that time was quite over exposed. I guess we had forgotten that we
would experience very heavy vignetting with such a short focal length
(further compounded by reciprocity failure at the extremities).

By Monday morning we were all packed up and leaving the hotel to move on
to the next stage: the processing of the paper negative. Given the
facilities we were using, we couldn't get started until late evening and
we also had to build handmade processing tanks (5 x10 feet) from 2x4
lumber and heavy gauge plastic. We used 100 litters of developer and
fix (way too much in retrospect) to fill the trays and unrolled each
strip of 50 x 8 1/2 feet into the trays, one after the other, out into
a quick stop bath and then into the fix. The negatives were then washed
thoroughly and installed back to dry on same the wood frame we had used
for exposure at the hotel.

The result was just astounding. Imagine a 12 1/2 feet by 8 1/2 feet
negative image with incredible details in every areas of the image (you
can count the number of chairs on a hidden roof top sundeck of the
Museum of Contemporary Arts and see pretty well inside the buildings
closeby, enough to count how many chairs there are around the desks or
worktables). Every details of the architecture landscape are clearly
visible in the image but strangely distorted in some areas of the image
through wide angle expansion and in other areas through telephoto
compression.

Because of the length of the time exposure (a little over 12 hrs), the
whole city looks unnaturally empty from the constant agitation
surrounding this area as if it had been deserted from all its
inhabitants after a major disaster. Only the buildings, the trees, the
sign and lamp posts and the cars parked on the street are visible with
incredible details. Very daunting.

The next stage for us is to do a contact print of the paper negative
into a positive image. This is the trickiest part and we are still
working on tests strips. We need to illuminate an area 12.5 x 8.5 feet,
and there is about 7 stops density difference between the centre of the
image (closest to the pinhole) and the edges. At this stage, we are
working with a single lamp projector 15 feet above the print and centred
just above the zone of heaviest density. I let you imagine the fun of
changing contrast filtration between each tests...! The goal is to
avoid having to do any burning and dodging by carefully configuring the
way the light spreads over the image and to make 11x14 tests strips

GeorgoffCadV8.JPG is growing on me as a real favorite. This particular 1935

right side gave me fade pale white to diffraction which I could not have
done if I had planned it. What's the word, serendipity? Yeah, I'll take
it.

This piece of garbage camera has given some great shots simply by virtue of
it's portability: 35mm does have it's advantages!!

A word to the prudent:

I have purchased many packs of Polaroid film on e-bay and the result has
been mixed. No matter how well sealed and preserved (in freezers and
refrigerators) over more than half of the film is bad! The biggest problem
is that the chemicals which process it, when pulled through the rollers, is
dried up. Either nothing is there or only a little and as a result most of
the shots are never developable. I have since stopped purchasing Polaroid
3.25x4.25 black and white and color film on bargain sites like e-bay - it is
just too depressing and frustrating.

Pinhole photography is not about sharpness, it is about pinhole
photography.

To put it another way (perhaps more clearly, perhaps not), it is not
about how sharp the photo is and it is not about how unsharp the photo
is. What it IS about is what the photo looks like. Sometimes being as
sharp as possible helps, sometimes being blurry helps.

It is certainly true that the optimal size pinhole is a good starting
point, but the photographer may need to use a different size to get the
photo they want. Serendipity can be a great creative tool, but using
the scientific tools that are available (such as the formulas) can work
jus as well from a creative standpoint.

Note that I said pinhole photography above. Pinhole camera making
is not always the same thing. Often, that IS about getting the sharpest
photo possible. That is more of an engineering issue than a creative one.

The best answer that I can think of to the question What size pinhole
should I put in my camera? is: Use the size that will produce the type
of photo that you want. In other words, the answer is That depends...

it's made of poplar. there's a wooden frame inside to hold the film/paper

i sanded a finger tip off, blackened a fingernail on a belt sander, and
burned two fingers on a hot screw that i was grinding with a cutoff wheel -
this is how my last few months have been going .. everything i produce is

Thank you James. All of us involved appreciate your kind words and the many
thanks we have received in email, the exhibition guest book, and here on the
discussion list.

We on the coordinating team also appreciate the (unsolicited) reference to
the t-shirts and other wares available. However, we decided several weeks
ago not to promote these items ourselves because we did not want to turn
pinhole day into a commercial event. At the same time, we wanted to make
some items available to those who want them, to commemorate WPPD2. No one
should feel that you need to buy any of these items to support pinhole day -
that is not an issue. If you would like one of these items for your
enjoyment, they are available and of good quality (based on the ones I have
bought and others comments).

I would like for everyone to know the finances of this. It cost us nothing
to set up this service with cafepress.com. Guy Glorieux designed the white
t-shirt and I designed the other items. We set the web site with the items
and CafePress.com prints items as they are ordered. They seem to do a very
good job, but have been a little slow to ship things in the past couple of
weeks. For each item sold, we get one dollar, regardless of the item, and
they get the rest. The check is sent to me and I'm keeping records of what
we receive. So, we're not talking about a lot of money. But, what we
receive will be used only for WPPD expenses. And so far, those expenses are
very small - domain name registration, and some web server expenses. It is
very unlikely we will collect more than our annual expense for the web site.

We are feeling very proud of this year's event, and very excited about what
we believe was a very large turnout on April 28. The photos that are coming
in We can all celebrate the success of this year's pinhole day (no t-shirts
required!)

Thanks again to everyone who helped make this a fun day for a lot of people,
and to everyone who got out there and had some fun!

Subject: [pinhole-discussion] The Wyndham Montreal Hotel Giant Pinhole
Camera Project

Hi all,

For those that are interested, I'll be turning a hotel room in Montreal
into a giant pinhole camera on April 28. Details of the project can be
found at the following URL (Zernike has offerd to build and host the web
site which is still in progress):
http://www.zeroimage.com/Guy/PinholeHotel.html

We will be a team of four photographers. The room will be on the 6th
floor, kindly offered by Wyndham Montreal Hotel, for the period from
saturday noon to monday noon. This will give us lots of time to do the
set-up ahead of time.

The image will be printed on Ilford RC VC paper, with a yellow filter on
the pinhole. We'll be working with 3 strips of 50 in. x 9 feet from a
roll of 100 feet. The pinhole should be about 0.1'' diameter with a
focal length of 10 feet. This works out an f-stop of F-1200. With a
yellow filter and paper at ISO 3, this should work out to an exposure
time of about 1.5 hrs on a sunny day.

There are no reciprocity failure charts for paper, but it is just as
real as for film. So I'll have to make some tests before next week but
I expect to end up with an exposure time of maybe 8-12 hrs. I just hope
that it'll be sunny weather outside. If it's rainny, we can either move
the paper closer to the window and shorten the focal length to open up
the F-stop or work with a larger pinhole diameter and get a somewhat
more blurry image.

The plan is to calculate the focal length/F-stop based on the weather
outside so as to be able to open the shutter at 00:00hr on Sunday April
28 and to let the exposure run until 24:00hr.

We'll be using RC paper and, once we have the paper negatives, we'll
make a 4' x 8' contact print from each of the three 50'' x 9'. (You
soak the paper negative and the unexposed paper positive, squeegee them
together and do you exposure). I have not yet got around to making
tests but I do not see any major difficulties here, assuming that I
managed to get through the first stage of processing the paper negative.
We'll be using wallpaper tanks to roll and unroll the paper in the
chemistry. Washing and drying will be the tough parts.

The final paper negative and positive (3 each) will be mounted on thick
board to make a twin triptych - either all 3 positive and all 3 negative
or alternating 1 positive and 1 negative.

Cheers,

Guy

just fix it for 1/2 the time in the tube then dump it into a fixer tray.

One of the big reasons to fix in a tray using the BTZS tubes is to get the
fixer to the back of the film so it will remove the pink anti-halation
backing during fixing. The only knock on the tubes is that you do tend to
have problems with the antihalation dye remaining on the back of the
negative. Hypo clear will help get rid of it.

Just remember, if you're using an 8x10 filmholder, that 8x10 paper is

Subject: [pinhole-discussion] Pinhole on film

A while ago somebody asked about pinholes exposed on film.
I have been thinking about this before, but never took the time to
try it.
Now I had to do a print film and used the border of the page for
some tests.
I only exposed some polaroid pictures until now, so I am not sure if
the
sharpness actually equals a real hole.
But as far as I can tell from the first tests, it seems to work
quite well.

The good thing about this technique is
 a) it is very easy to make a perfectly clean hole of exact size
 b) it is the only way to make holes of other shape, like stars (if
you don't
 have a laser)

 The way to do it:
Use a vector graphics program (like corel draw and many others).
Draw a black square of 25*25 cm.
Put a white shape in the center of the square, using a size of 1 mm.
(I used
one dot and two different stars from the wingdings font)
Combine the two objects and reduce the whole thing to 2.5*2.5 cm.
This way you can be sure that the hole will be 0.1cm .
(If you need other sizes, it should be not too difficult to
calculate)
Then you can duplicate the object as often as the size of the page
allows
 it.
Save it as print file and send it to your service bureau.

Unfortunately, I don't have much time at the moment for playing
around with
them, but if somebody else would like to try it:
I have made enough filmholes, so that the first 10 people who send
me
their snail-address can get a set of them.

I would like to see the results!

 Christoph

PS: some of my pinhole photographs can be seen on www.chwirsing.de
(made
with a zero2000, not the filmholes yet)

By box formation do you mean in a square? How about making a disk for a
shutter with a hole corresponding to each pinhole. To expose rotate the
disk and the holes in the shutter coincide with the pinholes. As a light
trap you could have a raised rim around the disk and if the disk covers
enough area outside beyond the pinholes, then light leaks should not be a
problem. For transporting the camera you could even have a lens cap over
the set up to ensure total darkness.

The negative was made in an 8x10 wide angle camera using 8x10 ortho film

Both prints were contact printed on handcoated paper, (Stonehenge) one

The salted paper print was exposed in the sun for ~ 5 minutes, the

Both were developed in plain water. Salted paper prints need to be fixed,
cyanotypes just need plain water.

The image is of a window of one of the local artist supply shops. They

Please have a look at my pinhole website. It's not finished yet, I hope to
add captions to all the photos and give some information about the cameras
used. Then there is the links page and all the other bits I have forgotten.

Just click on the 'pinhole photography gallery' banner.

http://www.s-rees.co.uk/

Although I haven't contributed much to this list I do enjoy reading the
posts and looking at all the photos.

I must say thanks to Roger Armour for re-kindling my enthusiasm for pinhole
photography.

bretton--
i have done quite a few digital pinholes, but the only way i
figured out to do it feasibly was with a digital slr (i used a
canon d30), and taking the lens off, i used a coke can-converted
to pinhole lens capthis worked quite well, but definitely
NOT without pixels. i have a few on my website
www.meggould.neti ended up making big enlargements with
these (A3 and bigger), and the pixels are impressively large, as
the cameras aren't really designed for long exposures (mine were
mostly around 10 seconds), making images with lots of noise.
problem with 4 x 5 back in a ready-made pinhole 4 x 5 back is
the light-tight-ness, as the digital backs have a scanning
arm-device thing, and the dowels to keep the film holder in
place are definitely not compatible. something could certainly
be rigged up though, i imagine. though i don't know of any that
has the possibility of a long exposure either

Hello all,

This pinhole shot is for amusement only

http://www.users.skynet.be/asveyou/pinball

Sorry for the metaphor, as a french speaker, I'm not so sure about
its relevance but I couldn't resist any longer.

Sometimes a photographer's life looks like that... Smashed into the
playground, you've got to turn lamps on, collect bonus on great
shots. The bolder is your trajectory, the better you succeed. And
finally, if you have been really good, you can SHOOT AGAIN :-)

Happy Valentine's Day everyone...

The new Merlin-XD pinhole camera is ready. You put the
chemistry right in the camera to develop the pictures in room
light or outdoors. Details can be found at
www.paintcancamera.com

There's also a lot of good info on building cameras obscura
and projects for teachers students of pinhole photography
to enjoy.

Cheers
Jim

Many thanks,

Too bad this is already over. I had just been checking this produce out
and a similar one for inkjet printing. Here is a link to their web site.

http://www.horizonsisg.com/metalphoto/

It went for $21.50 which was probably a steal. I guess I need to check
my pinhole messages more often.

andy, that's rediculous, all you have to do is test it to find out for
 yourself:
scrape a small piece of copper down to bright metal with sandpaper and
immerse the copper in used fixer... silver will begin to plate in less
than
a minute... now try it with developer!
can you locate these articles for us?
 jim

That's not a test for silver content, just a test to see if silver will
plate out under those chemical conditions. Developers with high
sodium sulfite concentrations are supposed to dissolve some of the
silver
grains.
