Prob'ly Ken can answer this best, but a few things come to mind; The green scrubby's often have soap in them or other contaminants. Polishing the silver would not be necessary in any case, mild soap, water and three good rinses in distilled after they're cleaned, a clean fresh paper towel after.

Possibly, you pushed contaminants from the scrubby into the micro pits in the electrodes. Shining up the electrodes just wastes silver, doesn't accomplish anything and is a possible source of contamination. .just wipe off the loose stuff with something clean.if even that. There
