[OSM-talk] representing OSM to data providers
Hi, As I explore possible data sources to be included in the OSM database (of course always with the restrictions/permission/license requirements in mind), I have come to realize that there are a lot of people/institutions willing to provide geodata. Oftentimes there's catch, which usually is that I provide them the output, I then immediately point them to www.openstreetmap.org where they can freely use the data. However, in this side of the hemisphere, paper work and institutional affiliation is necessary for you to engage in such data exchange discussions. Since OSM is my volunteer/hobby/passion effort, I am not affiliated with any organization to represent negotiations for OSM. How do I overcome such bumps? Can I officially say I represent the OSM project (I'm not even a member of OSMF)? Does OSMF have some sort of template communication saying: we request for XXX data to be part of the OSM's database? Any thoughts? Please don't make the discussions too legal:) cheers, maning PS Metro Manila, Philippines is getting better by the week! Thanks to the increasing number of contributors. Starting with a list of towns that we have reasonably-well mapped, such as: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Towns_in_Surrey we can download each of the wiki pages and look for geotags in them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_OpenStreetMap/OJW_list_n otes Once we know where the town is, we can either render a map of it, or create an SVG map, or create a template with some new mediawiki extension[1]. In this example, I just downloaded (automatically, of course) an image from [EMAIL PROTECTED], and uploaded it to wikimedia commons: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:OpenStreetMap_render_Banstead.png Once a map is available, we don't necessarily want to force it onto the wikipedia article just yet. But we can leave a message on the talk page saying that a map is available, showing what it looks like, and giving instructions how to use it in the article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Ashford%2C_Surrey There is some software available which can do all of the above: http://trac.openstreetmap.org/browser/applications/rendering/forWikipedia/w ikipediaMaps.pl so now the debate could be: do we want to? regards, OJW [1] http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Collaboration_with_Wikipedia I think it would be great to have OSM mapping more widely distributed, however I'd be concerned that if this is a static process maps could end up on wikipedia which are constantly out of date because they are very much work in progress. Small photos are also handled faster by JOSM. Indeed, but I'm always finding I want to zoom in on something in the photo because of what I inadvertently caught in the background so having a slightly higher resolution is helpful. Re: [OSM-talk] administrative boundaries that run along roads - in the Mapnik layer
Good call Andy. I have moved admin boundaries to its own style in osm.xml and put it in its own layer that paints last. Works fine. Whilst about it I have devised hierarchical mapnik styles for all 7 admin_levels that have been used so far (2,3,4,5,6,8,10). This will mean that boundary=admin will have to be supplemented by an admin_level=foo tag as well to show correctly. If I can get it to work I will use Else Filter for the moment for cases where no admin_level is present yet. All done late last night so not commited to SVN yet, but hope to get it in next style sheet that is deployed. Feel free to patch osm2pgsql as you suggested. Incidentally, would it be possible for someone to patch osm2pgsql so that instances of =true, =yes and =1 were seen to be the same thing? That way there would be no need for long strings of AND =true, =yes and =1 in order to filter for instance on bridges, tunnels etc. Cheers STEVE Steve Chilton, Learning Support Fellow Learning and Technical Support Unit Manager School of Health and Social Sciences Middlesex University phone/fax: 020 8411 5355 email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.mdx.ac.uk/schools/hssc/staff/profiles/technical/chiltons.asp Chair of the Society of Cartographers: http://www.soc.org.uk/ SoC conference 2008: http://www.abdn.ac.uk/cartographers08/ -Original Message- From: Andy Allan [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 11 February 2008 10:48 To: Steve Chilton Cc: Adrian Frith; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [OSM-talk] administrative boundaries that run along roads - in the Mapnik layer Hmm. Since the layer tag is supposed to be for defining the relative vertical displacement of physical features, I think I will rustle up a patch to osm2pgsql to strip off layer tags for non-physical features like admin boundaries :-) If we (or any renderer) want the admin boundaries showing above roads, it should be controlled through the rendering process rather than using layer=. For example, I would move the administrative rendering rule in osm.xml to a separate style from minor-roads, and then put that style in a separate layer. These boundaries run often down the middle of roads, railways or rivers. They show up very nicely on the Osmarender/[EMAIL PROTECTED] layer as dashed red lines - see for example http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=-33.95lon=18.45zoom=12layers=0BFT On the Mapnik layer, however, they show up only where they do *not* run along roads or railways - it seems that the other features are rendered on top of the boundaries. Should we not be rendering administrative boundaries above real features? My understanding is that this would require a change to the z_order code in osm2pgsql. Is that correct? The point is that for when part of a road belongs to a route, you'll either need to: * split the ways at the start and end point of that route for the road and at the ways in between to the relation * or we'll have to make a new segment relation with that part, and add that one to the route relation. So that's what I mean with the extra layer of segment relations. Greetings Ben ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/talk

Re: [OSM-talk-nl] EUR 15K grant for software development
Gefeliciteerd. The objective was to give body to a proposal we were preparing for NLNet [2], which would include a grant for software development. The resulting discussion on talk / dev and discussion within the Dutch chapter led to a proposal submitted on Dec. 1st. The proposal is in Dutch and encompasses much more than the software development. It is available here [3]. Last month NLNet granted our request for funding -- at least, the software development part. So now we have EUR15k to spend on various development projects! Great, huh? This is how we think we should proceed: 1. I'll set a page up on the Wiki up to enable us to finetune the projects we're going to be supporting (asap). Starting point will be the central issues outlined in the proposal: a. Monitoring and Rollback b. Mobile Editor c. 'Map annotation for the rest of us' 2. We'll have a review period to finalize the project definitions. This can't last too long, NLNet wants to see progress. Two weeks max. 3. After the review, I submit the definitive project plans to NLNet for approval. 4. On approval, anyone (individual or group) would be able bid on the projects. After that, we agree on who's doing what and we can start implementation. NLNet will require close monitoring, a transparent process, definition of milestones and progress reports throughout the year. This will be an excellent opportunity to catalyse some of the OSM development projects, don't you agree? Let's hear your thoughts on this, I'll let you know when the wiki is done. Re: [talk-au] Copyright in Australia (Was: Tagging questions)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote on 13/02/2008 10:05:26 AM: The Australian situation seems to be unique - a combination of some unique, potentially restrictive, copyright rulings, coupled with massive area and large numbers of seldom travelled tracks with no street signs leaves those of us trying to map the rural areas in a bit of a bind. (To continue our academic discussion!) I don't think the copyright situation is more restrictive in Australia than in the UK. The UK has much the same copyright law, many of the same precedents, and in addition to this explicitly recognises a database right in their copyright legislation. It could be argued that even if using a street directory for a list of names was legal in Australia, the servers being located in the UK may breach UK law. Now in the US, of course, there is no database right, no copyright on database on facts. --- If you are interested in this stuff, have a read of the IceTV judgement at http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/cases/cth/FCA/2007/1172.html The IceTV case concerned the production of a TV guide to rival the Channel Nine produced one. IceTV won that case, and Channel Nine were relying heavily on Desktop Marketing v Telstra as the basis for their arguments. There are some parallels with OSM. Copyright was held to subsist in the Channel Nine TV guide - the substantial effort involved etc. IceTV generated their own guide, initally by watching TV for a month straight and recording all the programs the torture period - as it is called in the case. Subsequently, they made amendments by consulting the yahoo TV guide, amoungst other things, looking for changes to the weekly schedule. The amending of the IceTV guide based on this was not held to be an infringement of Nine's copyright in the original guide (even though their copyright did subsist in the aggregated guide released by yahoo). The somewhat unhelpful conclusion reached, was that each case turns on its own facts, and has to be tested by the nature and extent of what was copied. -- Next time you are driving across that remote forest road, consider how lucky you are to be working on OSM rather than the Open TV Guide project. What is the page of the wiki (if any) that runs me through using JOSM to add roads, roundabouts and how to link things correctly to existing ways? Any company would have to produce evidence that you had actually copied from their database - just having a list of streets identical to another is no proof that you copied it, rather than sourcing it from the physical world. That's why Sensis persist in having errors in their database - purely to catch anyone doing wholesale copying without verifying against the real world, to identify the fake streets. Re: [talk-au] Copyright in Australia (Was: Tagging questions)
I don't really understand why you guys are wanting so much to get a free ride. The really important thing about OSM is to create a map that we can be sure does not infringe anyone else's copyright. It really doesn't matter how long that takes. In my mind, if there's the slightest doubt about any particular source then it should discounted out of hand. If people have to visit every single street on the planet, then so be it - that's the fun part of the project anyway. 80n On Feb 11, 2008 9:29 PM, Ian Sergeant [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Matt White [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I reckon the multi source approach should also be valid for street name sourcing - that way you aren't relying on a single companies *substantial effort* required be careful here. if copyright subsists, because of substantial effort, then copyright subsists. you can't argue that copyright doesn't subsist for a work used in one way, but does for a work used in another. once copyright is shown to subsist, it only then matters whether you are using within the bounds of what is permitted for a copyrighted work. it is likely copyright subsists in a street directory list of street names. the only question then is what amounts to permitted use under the copyright provisions. Is looking up a street directory by multiple people to confirm an address before travelling there fair use? It is easy to argue in favour of this. The street directory was intended for this purpose. Is looking up a street directory to validate a competing street directory, rather than paying for or otherwise putting effort into verifying the source? I wouldn't like to be in court arguing that case.. Also - don't forget there are contractual terms of use in google maps, etc which prohibit this. This really only leaves a couple of sources of this street name data. (in Australia, and apparently only Australia, we have to wear the consequences of the DtMS v Telstra judgement which in essence says that factual items can be copyrighted in a substantial effort was required to collate and present them). The court in Desktop Marketing v Telstra, certainly believed they were disregarding US precedent, and following UK precedent. The issue will probably never be argued in a UK court, because they have strong protections in the form of a database right legislation, and will likely never have to rely on copyright to protect factual information.

Une véritable mine d'or.

These all need to be finished by mid-April though (so first 4 vs second 4 doesn't really seem to make much difference). The likes of Oxfordshire should, I imagine, be a lot more complete, but I'm certainly going to need help with the other counties. I'm going to start off with generating some sample maps of the individual counties and see how things go from there. I'll then most likely start comparing with NPE maps and ask some of you to confirm missing features and/or add them to OSM myself. I'm sure I'll keep you up to date on my progress anyway.
