Oh damn I just notitced that the ppa version is 3.2.2.1 as well. :( (Not Gnome-shell 3.4.) So if the modal + 3.2.2.1 didn't fix it it's either an other problem or it just doesn't work for you. I can't recommend 3.4 as I don't know if it's really stable. Maybe waiting for the next Linux Mint

Hi Deepak. did you make sure you used the Gnome solution at point 3 and not the Cinnamon version? Because Alt+F2 is for Cinnamon, for Gnome it's just F2 then enter r and hit Return. If a crash happens the shell should restart itself. Sometimes it doesn't (what seems like what you described).

UPDATE: I booted into recovery mode, ran sudo apt-get remove fglrx. Booted into mint12, installed the full catalyst drivers (12.3) direct from ATI website. This fixed the Italic tooltips for me and seems to have reduced the Shell crashes but they are still present. Will shortly test a 3d game
