OK. I think I did. Please let me know if it didn't work properly.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Customizing styles and keeping them in templates in Writer?

2023-11-24 Thread bunk3m
 Thank you Eric.

I have a number of templates. For example, templates for different types
of reports, memoranda, letters etc.

I did create a default template initially. I thought it would be something
like the "normal" in MS Word. It contained all the styles. Then I created
one a template for a report based on the default. Unfortunately neither
the default or the report template kept the list styles or paragraph styles
created in either. The only thing that stuck was the fonts but those are
set as default in the User Preferences and not in the template.

I'm not sure how making one of these templates the default will fix the
missing styles within each of the templates as it hasn't worked so far.

[libreoffice-users] Customizing styles and keeping them in templates in Writer?

2023-11-24 Thread bunk3m
Hello,

I'm using LO 7.6.2.1 on Win11 and Mac.

I can't get the styles to work and stick in templates. I've used styles
and templates in MS Word for 30 years before switching to LO in the past 5
years. I've read the help, Writer User Guide and Designing with LO 2nd Ed.
and apparently have missed something conceptual as I can't get the styles
to stick within the templates.

I've created the styles in blank documents and then saved the document as a
template.I expected that the paragraph, font, list formats & styles that I
created would be saved in the template and reusable in subsequent documents
created from the templates.

But when I use the templates to create a new document, none of the
previously created styles are there. I find I have to recreate all the
styles again as they aren't anywhere within the template. So far it's been
a colossal waste of time.

I've found that all the "Youtube University" and User Guides are
superficial when it comes to styles. My goal is to set up a set of
corporate styles that can be used by numerous people in our organization to
ensure consistency.

Can someone direct me to some more detailed documentation on how the styles
are supposed to work? Perhaps with some more detailed documentation I can
figure out what or how these are supposed to work ... or file a bug reports.

Thank you in advance.
B.

[libreoffice-users] Bump -> Rotated text on Line object?

2023-09-12 Thread bunk3m

Hello all,

As my message appears to have become lost, I am asking again.

I need some help figuring out how to format text on a line.

Is it possible to have text horizontal while the line drawn is at an
angle? If yes, how?

More details below.

Using LO 7.6 Draw on Mac.

Background:
I have a chart with many text boxes that have text centred inside. The
boxes have an outline.

To show "flow" from one box to the next I have joined the boxes with
lines with arrows.

When you double click the arrow line you can add text to the arrow line
object. This is great however the text for the line object ends up
aligned ALONG the line. So if the line is at 45 deg, the text is at 45 deg.

To make the text easier to read the text, I'd like the text to be at
aligned in the reading direction ie. horizontal Something like my line
art diagram below

 /
/
 text
  /
 /
/

Is this is even possible? If yes, where is the formatting command? If
no, I'll add an enhancement request.

Thanks in advance.

PS I'm on digest mode. Please reply to list and cc me directly

Re: [libreoffice-users] Calc airithmetic snafu

2021-11-30 Thread bunk3m
Or perhaps leave the actual number in the first column and just use a
cell format for the "km".

i.e.

1) Leave 2.4 in the cell
2) ctrl+1 (cmd+1 mac) to open format cell
3) then in the Format Code type " km" behind the number format.

And now your 2.4 will show "2.4 km" in the cell.

And you can do your arithmetical calculations on the cell as you've only
changed the visual number format.

Greetings,

If you do not like adding columns, you could do the following:

1) Select everything (CTRL-A)
2) Do a search & replace to remove all the "km" indications. This
should also convert the entry in the cells to numbers at the same time.
3) Keeping what is still selected, go to Cell > Format (CTRL-1), and
set the number format to User defined with the format as # ##0.0" km".
This will have your numbers displayed with the proper units.

I hope this helps.

1. The formula =Value(Left(C1,Find(" ",C1))) will be insensitive to

2. When I remove units from a list, usually I'm working a large
amount of
data and find that the whole spreadsheet works better when source
data like
this isn't the result of formula. That is, it doesn't take so long to
refresh when I'm only waiting on 10,000 calculations, and not
10,000,000
calculations.

So to avoid those annoying long refresh times, instead of creating
the
source data with formula I copy the column to a new one, ensure there
are
adequate new columns behind it, then convert the column to data with
"Data
-> Text to Columns" and choose to break on space only (in your case,
sometimes I have to list out the first letter of units, but then I
lose the
units, so instead I find/replace the new column to introduce tab
characters
before doing the text to column action. (And if you trust yourself to
recognize mistakes in the text to columns steps before "undo" is
gone,
copying the column to another one isn't required.)

Sorry for the late response, I'm on digest mode.

While this isn't a one keyboard shortcut, you can do the following:

I use the following to achieve the delete current row when in a cell.

When in the cell,
press shift+spacebar (highlight row)
and then the ctrl+- (to delete row)

That suggests you are running Linux.

The image Dave is referring to was taken from a Windows 7 install of
the Calc Guide 6.2. We (The Documentation Team) always take captures
of the guide we are writing about. As much as we would like to, we
cannot cover every possible visual difference between each operating
system.

The conclusion to this thread is that Ctrl+- opens the dialog in both
Linux and Windows (cannot speak for macOS), but the D key only
functions as described by Brian under Windows, which is why Linux
users don't see the underline. Although less convenient, Linux users
can use the up and down arrow keys can be used to select the required
option.

Since I believe such underlines were implemented on Unix/Linux before
Windows, it's disappointing to me that the functionality isn't there in
the Linux implementation.

And in this case where there's a functional difference rather than a
visual difference, it would be nice to see that documented.

But thanks for explaining the situation. PS I think you mean R key
rather than D key.

If I understand correctly, HSQLDB is being replace by Firebird. So I'd

[libreoffice-users] Base created from xlsx file - move to proper DB

2020-03-18 Thread bunk3m

Hello all.

I thought I had gotten the data from a flat file (xlsx) into Base. I
was trying to import and create a new database.

My work requires my data to be in the company OneDrive. When I try to
open the connected flat file, I get errors that the file location or
parameters are not OK. So all the work I did is lost. This is likely a
bug but I don't have time to report this at the moment.

Apparently I incorrectly used: "File:Connect to an existing database" as
that just appears to connect to the flat file but won't actually create
a proper table in Base. While I can understand the use case for just
accessing a flat table, I'd like to import not just connect.

There has to be an easy way to import the data without having to
manually create a table and then import the csv file. What am I missing?

I'm just trying to get data into Base easily.

LO v6.4.0.3 on Win10 64B.

Thanks in advance.

[libreoffice-users] Calc link problem on Mac

2019-05-22 Thread bunk3m
I'm looking for some help in debugging an issue that I've had since LO
5.4 on Mac. (I've been using LO since it forked.) I'm now running LO
6.3alpha

When I attempt to link a cell in one spreadsheet to another, the linking
action using "=spreadsheet/cell location" transposes the link location
to lowercase and I get ERR:501/ERR:507/ERR:509.

ie.
correct link:
'file:///Users/me/Documents/Time & Expense
Forms/TIMEEX201703.ods']'Details of Expenses 3'!I54

link when made on the Mac or edited on the Mac it looks like this:
'file:///users/me/documents/time & expense
forms/timeex201703.ods']'details of expenses 3' I54

I have tried the exactly same linking with exactly the same spreadsheets
using LO on Win & Linux and there is no problem. As soon as I try this
on the Mac it breaks.

I've posted a bug and it's now nearly 2 years old. It was temporarily
fixed in one beta version but I can't find it anymore.

I've been testing alpha and beta builds with the hope that this issue
would be resolved but no luck.

I'm frustrated that the bug is still open and want to help figure out
why there is a problem but I don't know what to try. I use the linking
daily but am stuck on Excel because I can't get it to work on LO.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks.

Install nodejs (see https://nodejs.org/en/)

Download, and install 'google-timeline-to-csv' in a directory.

Now when you do this:

'node index.js'

You might get an error about missing library's.

To install those missing library's type:

'npm install fs path xmldoc json2csv moment'

(npm should be installed together with nodejs)

==

Thanks so far Luuk.

I have installed nodejs10 and npm6 using Macports as I didn't know any
other way to get that installed.

It is throwing errors on processing the 'Location History.json' file.

'node index.js ../Takeout/Location\ History/ > ../Takeout/location.csv'

In the location.csv file I find this:

Should I be referring to the github project?

Could you give me an idea how to search for such an error?

When I go to Bullets and Numbering, Customize Goto Level 2 and show

[libreoffice-users] Writer paragraph numbered list issue

2018-06-04 Thread bunk3m

Hi!

Today I've had 2 frustrations with LO Writer (6.0.4 & 6.2a). To keep
this shorter and easier to follow, I'm posting two topics

This email has the second of those frustrations.

I have a legal document that was originally a MS Word doc. I don't want
to rebuild the complete document to fix page numbering and
outline/paragraph numbering style. I would appreciate any pointers on
how to fix the following issue.

The legal document has numbering for paragraphs. There is a section of
paragraphs that has a second level of number in the Word document. That
second level of number hasn't translated over into LO properly. ie. top
level is 1., second level is 1.1 This worked fine in MS Word.

I've tried to change the paragraph numbering in bullet & number style
but that hasn't worked. I can't get any of the numbering to change.

The document goes from paragraph 1 to 11 and then should have 11.1 to
11.9 but I end up with paragraph 1 to 20.

How do I change the paragraph number style and get it to stick.

Thank you in advance.

PS I'm on digest mode so would appreciate if you can cc me directly on
any suggestions.

[libreoffice-users] Writer page numbering issue + numbered list issue

I started using LO earlier this year and have found page numbers a
challenge.

I have a legal document that was usually added into or appended to a
proposal document that was printed to a pdf.

So I have changed the page number in the legal document to start with
the page following the last page of the proposal. ie. proposal has five
pages so the legal document would start on page 6.

I've been to a dozen websites and seen a few youtube videos but still
can't get the page number to change from "4". I'd like it to be "1" for
the present document.

What I've tried. a) Delete the footer; b) delete the footer, then reset
the default footer; c) in the page style change the type flow option to
set the page number. Nothing works.

How do I manually change the starting page number for the legal
document? What's the secret to get this to work?

If you set the page background colour to black, the text colour on the

Automatic, not White. I think that to achieve exactly what you describe
so far you must have set your text Font Colour explicitly to White. So
far, so good. It seems that to get the Notes to work properly, you need
to set the bullet colour similarly to White, not Automatic. You will
find this setting on the Customise tab of the Bullets and Numbering

I trust this helps.

I've checked the master pages for the normal view and I have already set

I see from the stackexchange hint that the switch between windows of the

I've tested it and it doesn't work in any app that I use. :-( Each one

In the end, I can learn something new but I really would like it to be

Difficult to lay the blame in such a case as most of the testers and

I understand that it is probably hard coded somewhere but is there any way to fix this

The non-standard keyboard shortcut in one of the applications is driving

This is frustrating enough to have me hound someone.  I've been trying to get
to a point of removing the M$ applications but these stupid little non-standard
UI things really frustrate me and keep the M$ stuff installed so I can work
properly.

I never thought I'd say this but the Mac version of Office 2010 was very good

compared to the Win version).  LO has been much better at keeping all
functionality similar across platforms but these UI problems really slow down

[libreoffice-users] Changing key board shortcuts in Mac LO Calc

2018-01-24 Thread bunk3m

Hi.

In LO 5.x the Calc keyboard shortcut to change between open documents
followed the Mac UI standards. That means that when you use the
keyboard shortcut [ ~ + CMD ] (tilde + command or Apple key) you switch
between open documents.

In LO 6.x Calc the [~+CMD] shortcut now shows the cell formulas rather
than switching between open docs. This shortcut still works properly in
Writer and Impress.

I has posted a bug but I want to manually change the ~+CMD in Calc back
to the normal behaviour.

I can't figure out how to do this.
1) I can't find what ~+CMD is doing in the keyboard shortcuts in Calc.
2) I don't know what the command for switch between open documents is
called in order to look it up in the list.

Can someone let me know where I can find this in the documents or give
me some help so I fix this?

The non-standard keyboard shortcut in one of the applications is driving
me crazy.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Calc 5.x Mac - syntax to link cells in two spreadsheets?

2017-10-30 Thread bunk3m

Steve,

I just tested your scenario (Tools:Automatic Spell Check -> off) and I
had a similar transformation of text. It didn't remove the "!" though.
All the other changes happened.

OO 3.3 and OO 4.1

In each case I followed these steps.
1) open two linked spreadsheets
2) place "=" in a cell, switch to other spreadsheet, select the linked
cell and press enter key.
3) in each case on the Mac (LO 5.1/5.3/5.4); LO changes all the upper
case letters to lower case, changes some of the characters ie. #, $
and ! are removed and you get an error message.

If you try to manually change the text entry changes from (3), when
you press the enter key it reverts to the incorrect text.

Using the same spreadsheets and following steps (1) & (2) and using
Win LO 5.2 & Linux Xubuntu LO 3.5.7.2, the linking works without error.

Using the same spreadsheets and following steps (1) & (2) and using
Mac OO 3.3 and 4.1, the links work without error.

So at this point I opened the spreadsheet in LO Mac and the links
created by Win and Linux versions are still OK.

If I use Mac LO to copy and paste the entire cell created by Win &
Linux versions of LO and OO,there is no transformation and the linking
works.

If I use Mac LO and select in the cell, highlight and copy the link

the formula and ERROR.

I think we've found a bug.

OO 3.3 has absolutely no problem with the linking to external files.
So my file does link when using OO.  This is beginning to look like a

So, this is my opinion about best drives to buy.

Even 1 month old Military specs 2-TB USB Drive can go bad.  Mine did.
At least most of it was backed up on a different drive/system.  It
only cost me $100 plus shipping for the original drive - from Walmart
of all places.

I always buy the best extended warranty I can get, for all my
electronics.  At least this replaces the device that died.

First, I personally would not go larger than 2-TB for a drive as your
MOST needed data, unless you have drives that are designed for NAS or
file server equipment.  That is my opinion for the drives I can afford
to buy, for the money I had when I need them. I use a desktop, and its
drives as the backup for my laptop data. It will end up as a file
server - one day.  I believe in a many device backup system - as follows;

I backup the laptop[s] data to my "Silicon Power 2TB Rugged Armor
    A30 Shockproof Standard 2.5" USB 3.0 Military-Grade Portable
External Hard Drive".  Then take that drive and copy the files to my
file "server" desktop's 3 different 2-TB internal drives. The are WD
brand.  Then I use a syncing backup script to the 3 external drives
    - again WD drives - 6-TB internal and 6-TB external.  So, I have at
least 2 different drives hold the "backups" of the data, if the
laptop drive goes bad.  It could be easier if I had more money.

I looked at a few places and the "best" drive type I found so far may
be the WD Red Pro drives for NAS storage.  They cost more than the WS
"Black" type, or other brands of drives.  They are designed for long
life in demanding needs.  I have seen the "red" drives as large as
8-TB for $400 USD.  The 4-TB run about $150.  If I have the money, I
would replace my current drives with these drives.

I currently do not have a NAS storage device - due to the fact I could
not figure out how to get my Linux systems to work with the current
router/NAS device I have, or any NAS storage outside of a desktop
setup.  That is why I hope to get one of my desktops to be a true
Ubuntu file server.

Hi Charles.

die within a few weeks. Replaced under warranty.
The probability of that is low, but it does happen. If the backup is
only a copy of what is on your PC/laptop then you are not needing
such high reliability as you always have at least one copy on a failure.

I archive (backup and delete original from PC) so use a little DS216
NAS storage unit  with 2 drives configured raid. Less frequently I
backup that to a single 4TB HD for off site safety (house burns down).

I also bought a drive on Amazon recently and noticed that there was
an option for $10 extra to cover data recovery in a failure.

I think your best solution will depend upon how much data you need to
back up and how often, an on-line solution may even work for you.

Have you found any such article?

OK, a quick update.

I continued to fiddle with the language settings.

I'm not sure what I changed but LO said that the changes required a
restart. So I did the restart and now it works! I can't figure out
what exactly changed to cause the restart but it looks like it's OK now.
 1+1.5=2.5 again! Hurrah!

If you know what changes cause LO to require a restart to affect the
change, I would appreciate knowing. Then if this happens again I'll
know what to do.

Thank you Jorge, Regina and Brian!

Cheers!

There exists the setting in Tools > Options > Language Settings > Languages,
where you can determine the decimal separator key.

In addition there is a setting "Ignore system input language", but I don't
know, what effect it has.

Another setting is in the cell properties in Format > Cells. On the tab "Numbers" you find top
right a "Language" drop-down list. You can determine the language for numbers independent from UI. Do
not use the "Default - xyz" but select the correct language explicitly.

That the places I know, which might influence it.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Letter page format size prints portrait pages as landscape on OS X

2017-07-28 Thread bunk3m

Alex,

Apologies if this has already been answered as I only get the daily digest.

In Canada our standard is letter (8.5" x 11"), legal (8.5" x 14"),
tabloid (11" x 17"). Because we use the metric system, PCs usually
default to cm. This is totally useless since our paper standards are in
inches.

I haven't had the problem with HP printers but I print to PDF more than
direct to the printer. PDF production is good. Perhaps the people with
this issue should print to pdf first and then open in Preview and print
the PDF. I've done this in the past when Acrobat did silly things.

Until today I was using LO 5.3.4. Today I upgraded to 5.4 so we'll see
if this changes.

It is confusing. As a summary, any number entered that is a decimal less
than 1.0 (one) can be entered OK and calculates OK. Any decimal number
greater than 1.0 gives the $NAME# error.

I didn't realize that there was another language setting in the cell
format. I've checked and it is set to the default which is "Canada
English". So it is consistent (exactly the same) between the Mac OSX
10.10.5 and the various places in LO.

This is exactly what you will see if your settings are for a locale which
uses the comma instead of the point as the fractional separator (as many
do). You can confirm this easily by entering (to modify your first example):
=4*1,5
- which should work.

You need to tell Calc to expect the point as the fractional separator.
Before installing any application software, select appropriate locale
settings in your operating system. Only if necessary, modify the settings
in the application. In LibreOffice, go to Tools | Options... | Language
Settings | Languages and make appropriate selections there. (Oh, on the
Mac, for "Tools | Options..." read "LibreOffice | Preferences".)

I trust this helps.
=
Thank you Brian.

I thought that was the issue, but I've tried =4*1, 5 and it gives me
Err:509.

I have used LO since it started as a fork from SO and never had this
problem before.

The decimal separator is the same as the locale English (Canada) which is (
. ).

I can open old Calc spreadsheets with decimal inputs and have no problem
until I try to enter new numbers.

I've noticed that if the formula is multiply by less than 1.0, the
calculation works. As soon as I try any decimal greater than 1.0, I get
the #NAME?.

=0.99 * 0.99 works
=1.1*0.99 gives #NAME?
=2*0.99 works
=2.1*1 #NAME?

Very weird.

I'm using OSX 10.10.5 if that points to anything.

I also tried LO 5.1.6 with same result.

Thanks again for any suggestions and help.

[libreoffice-users] Calc multiplication & division formulas acting strangely (Mac 5.2.3)

2016-11-06 Thread bunk3m
Today I created a spreadsheet in 5.2.3 (Mac) and each time I try to do a
multiplication with a decimal, Calc gives me a #NAME?.

In cell A1R1 =4*1.5 gives #NAME?

In each spreadsheet that I've opened I get the same problem.

When I do 4*150%, Calc changes the formula to =4*1.5 and gives 6.

Then I try =4/1.5 and I get #NAME?

The cell is formatted as Number:General so it should calculate.

I've opened spreadsheets created in Excel in LO Calc and they have the
same problem.

Functions are OK as far as I can tell.

I've checked all formats, settings that make sense, Googled and checked
the help if something has changed but I'm at a loss.

??What's going on here??

What should I be looking into?

Re: Re: [libreoffice-users] Can't open LibreOffice on Mac

2015-11-08 Thread bunk3m

Larry,

Usually you can also "right-click" on the Libreoffice Application and
select "Open" from the menu. It will ask you if you really want to do
that. If you select "Yes", Libreoffice should open.

Hi Larry, you should go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy and
in the General tab choose "Allow apps downloaded from Mac App Store and
identified developers" before launching LibreOffice for the first time
(in some cases you need to choose "Allow apps downloaded from anywhere":
the first option works fine on my MacBook, and does not work on my
MacBook Air). After you have launched LibreOffice, you can switch back
to the most secure option.

Ooops. Then LibreOffice can not open that file because the file is not a
pagemaker file, a corrupted pagemaker file or an unsupported pagemaker file.

Try http://www.zamzar.com or find some machine with pagemaker up and
running and let it export your files to whatever suitable.

Thank you everyone for suggestions. I apologize for the delay in
testing and replying.

I tried www.zamzar.com but Pagemaker 6.5 files can't be converted using
this service. I am pretty sure this was close to the last version
available on the Mac platform.

Where do I find the documentation of which versions of Pagemaker should
work with LO? I don't remember reading which versions were designed to
work in the docs but it quite likely that I didn't find the right URL.

Since these files are quite old, it is possible that the files are
corrupted. I've had them inside a zip archive and tried new unarchived
versions with the same result.

I did receive an email from someone regarding submitting the file for
bug testing. I seem to have misplaced that email so would you mind
sending me the link again? Thanks and apologies.

[libreoffice-users] LO 4.4 is supposed to import Pagemaker files? How?

2015-05-14 Thread bunk3m
I was all excited by the recent announcement that LO can open a number
of older Mac file formats and Pagemaker files. I am running the Mac 64
bit version of LO 4.4. (OSX 10.9.5)

So I wanted to finally convert a number of older Pagemaker 6.5 files to
something useable.

I searched the docs and searched this list to find instructions of
converting these files. All I can find is that you should import the
Pagemaker files.

There is no import command that I can find. Where is this?

I tried to open the Pagemaker 6.5 files directly but get General Error.
General Input / Output error.

So how are you supposed to open Pagemaker files?

Please not that I'm on digest. If you wouldn't mind cc'ing me directly
when / if you reply to the list.

Thanks in advance,
B.

[libreoffice-users] Update Java and LO to 4.4.1002 and now LO won't start

2015-03-10 Thread bunk3m
Hello.I updated my Java to Java 8u40 and deleted the old Java 7 from
/Library/Java/and updated LO to the recent 4.4.1002 for Mac 64 bit.  I
am using
OSX 10.9.5I tried to start LO and it won't complete the start saying that I
need to install Java 6 from Apple.  When I click on Not Now LO
quits.I understand from the Nabble posts that at one time 64 bit Java
didn't work with LO but those posts were a few years back and
besides, LO ran quite happily on another Mac we have that doesn't
have Java at all as far as I can tell.  We never use Base. How do I trick LO
to start so I can tell it to use Java 8 in the
prefs?  Or how do I get LO to start without needing to install the
Old Java SE 6 from Apple?I have googled this and I have read the install
docs and a few dozen
forum posts.  I haven't found something that addresses this so far
so if it exists please help me to find it.Thanks in advance for your
help.PS I'm on digest mode so please cc me directly.  Thank you!

[libreoffice-users] date acceptance patterns not sticking

2014-10-14 Thread bunk3m

Libreoffice is driving me nuts.

I am in Canada. UI is set to English US; Locale settings to English
Canada and Default Currency is CAD.

I have my Mac set dates to dd.mm.. (OSX 10.9.x)

For some reason Libreoffice (4.3.1.2) will only accept dates in the
-MM-DD format.

I'm happy that I can format the date to look DD.MM. but entering in
the -MM-DD is totally unnatural for me.

Actually, I only usually type the DD.MM and expect the to show up
automatically in Excel. I'd like the same behaviour in LO if possible.

The date acceptance patterns will not accept anything except what is
loaded by default ... which is

D.M.;DD-MM-;D-M

I don't want to have to type the each time for D.M..

I've tried to add D.M to the acceptance pattern but the text turns red
and won't save. The D.M is always gone after trying to save.

So if the date acceptance patterns are supposed to be customizable by
the user ...

what do I have to do to get this to work?

Thanks in advance.

[libreoffice-users] Re: LO 3.5.1 Java weirdness on OSX

I don't think it can anymore automatically (but I'm prepared to be
proven wrong ;-)), at least not on Mac, the handling of the Java path
was changed during 3.4.x or 3.5.x development, I seem to recall, because
LO was having problems recognising the write system Java path.

That is too bad. I'd like to use an updated Java since Apple is a bit slow
to update.

I want to run a more recent version and have more recent versions of
  Java installed.

But I can't add the versions of Java RE installed in

I have OpenJava 1.7.0u.jre installed in

  Questions:
Why doesn't LO use the 1.6.0_31 version installed?

Why can't I select to run 1.7.0u.jre from
Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines?

Like I said, I think it has to do with the path changes introduced for
Java recognition during 3.4/3.5 development (I don't exactly remember
 when this happened).

The only thing I can think of is if you change your environment
variables in your session bash profile or the corresponding session
plist. You might then be able to force LO to take the Java version of
 your choice.

I checked my .profile and changed the Java_home to where the OpenJava
1.7.0u.jre is installed.
Now java -version shows the correct 1.7.0 version.

---quote---
java -version
openjdk version 1.7.0-u4-b13
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0-u4-b13-20120224)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.0-b16, mixed mode)
---end quote---

LibreOffice 3.5.2 still shows the 1.6.0_29. I can't get the Options:Java
to select the newer java 1.7.0 version. I tried to Add and Class Path
but no luck. Shouldn't this work?

While I understand that the automatic finding of java versions on the Mac
has been problematic and been discontinued, shouldn't I be able to use
Add or Class Path to add the OpenJava 1.7.0 version?

I think that since Apple has decided to stop providing Java and is leaving
it up to the vendor, then the default install place will change to
/Library/Java from /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines. In that case
how will LO find a functioning recent version of java

 Alex

Thanks again for your help, Alex.

Cheers!

[libreoffice-users] Positive result story to share

2011-04-17 Thread bunk3m
Normally the list is about problems and solutions.

So I wanted to share something with everyone that is positive.

My son has a school supplied laptop that only has MS Office (XP). It is
locked down so tight that we can't install anything onto it.

He prepared his Powerpoint presentation (in .ppt), put it on a USB key
and took it to school.

But it wouldn't load on the PC at school running MS Office 2007. :-(

It also wouldn't open on my Mac running Office 2011. :-(
I tried Office 2011 because I thought the MS formats would be
compatible. Wrong.

I use Libreoffice more than Office so I thought we would try it. (I
also test the betas)

The presentation opened without any problem. We saved it to PDF so he
could take it to school. The pdf worked OK.

So all you developers, be pleased with your work! It is getting better
and better. In many cases, I now see it is better than MS Office!
Congratulations!

A win for Libreoffice!!
