At the Republican Convention in Dallas Texas in whatever year it was 1984? It
was called
Rock against Reagan. The night before we had went to see the parody show?
called Rock for Reagan
at the famous twilight room in Deep Elm
where Stickmen with Rayguns played among others. The lead singer got a blowjob
on stage, or
feigned getting one, it's all shrouded in myth and legend at this point, but i
do clearly remember
that wack freak from Stickmen kicking some guy in the head with his pointy
boots. My buddy
has an interview with that guy at his gas-station somewhere. North America,
South America,
If it don't say AMERICA, I SAY, BOMB IT! There was a big punk parade to counter the
christian parade with giant missile crucifixes with charred babydoll jesuses.

Jello had a broken leg and was wearing a Bush sticker on his crotch. Look at the
Christians! he said..
There was a little silver haired man with a beard who was wearing an Uncle Sam
suit
who introduced them and another little old man wearing a tarzan suit that was
passing
out legalize lsd fliers in the crowd.. my buddy lost his shoe in the slam pit.
I was wearing a butthole surfers t-shirt, (the one with the starving ethiopian
paperdolls on the front)
cut-offs, and a cowboy hat covered with punk pins and my thrashed checkered
vans slipons.. hehe I was skateboarding in
the punk parade! We gave some girls a ride back to Wichita Falls who were all
pissed
off because some older artist guy and his wife wanted to make plaster molds of
their vaginas..
hehe never forget it..

If they will not work then let them play. The slippage
and play of the signifiers is what it is all about.
The text is always about nothing precisely because
there is nothing outside the text for the text to be
about. The absent center of every text is also a door
leading to the thing outside the text that the text
would be about if it worked for a living by describing
something outside itself.

The text is a bird with one wing that goes into a
panic when it asks itself the unanswerable question of
what the text is about. It panics as if hotly pursued
by a dead police that no one would want to sleep with
and flies around and around in tighter and tighter
circles closing in on that center of itself which is
also a door into the absolute not-text other which
makes the text mean rather than just being a lazy
bonobo playing with the basic equipment because it's
there. The warm, gooey thing that happens when that
one-winged bird of a text finally disappears up the
neither end of its own sweet self is the thing that
the text is never about but can sometimes do on a good
day. It killed the policeman and it is glad.

In Egyptian mythology, Ptah (also spelt Peteh) was the deification of the primordial mound in the Ennead cosmogony,
which was more literally referred to as Ta-tenen (also spelt Tathenen), meaning risen land, or as Tanen, meaning
submerged land. The importance Ptah was given in history can readily be understood since the name Egypt derives from a
Greek spelling of the phrase Ḥ.wt-k3-Ptḥ, (sometimes transcribed Hat-ka-Ptah), meaning temple of the Ka of Ptah, the
name of a temple at Memphis.
It was said (in the Shabaka Stone) that it was Ptah who called the world into being, having dreamt creation in his
heart, and speaking it, his name meaning opener, in the sense of opener of the mouth. Indeed the opening of the mouth
ceremony, performed by priests at funerals to release souls from their corpses, was said to have been created by Ptah.
Atum was said to have been created by Ptah to rule over the creation, sitting upon the primordial mound.

In Greek mythology, the Dactyls (Greek for fingers) were the archaic race of small phallic male beings associated
with the Great Mother, whether as Cybele or Rhea, spirit-men like the Curetes, Cabiri and Korybantes. The Dactyls were
ancient smiths and healing magicians. In some myths, they are in Hephaestus' employ, and they taught metalworking,
mathematics, and the alphabet to humans.

A hogan is the primary traditional home of the Navajo people. Other traditional structures include the summer shelter,
the underground home, and the sweat house.
For those who practice the Navajo religion the hogan is considered sacred. The religious song The Blessingway
describes the first hogan as being built by Coyote with help from beavers to be a house for First Man, First Woman, and
Talking God. The Beaver People gave Coyote logs and instructions on how to build the first hogan, now known as a forked
stick or male (ách í ádeez áhí) hogan. This hogan resembles a pyramid with five triangular faces, which are named
morning (east), afternoon, sunset (west), darkness (north), argonite (or jet), and heat wave. Earth may fill the spaces
between the framework logs, hiding the five faceted shape and creating thick, winter-protective walls. The forked
stick or male Hogan contains a vestibule in the front and was used only for sacred or private ceremonies.
The circular or female Hogan (tsé beehooganí), the family home for the Diné people, is much larger and does not
contain a vestibule. In it, the children play, the women cook, weave, talk, and entertain and men tell jokes and
stories. Navajos made their hogans in this fashion until the 1900s, when they started to make them in hexagonal and
octagonal shapes. The change in shape may have been due to the arrival of the railroad. A supply of wooden cross-ties,
which could be laid horizontally to form walls of a larger, taller home, allowed the retention of the female hogan
shape but with more interior room.
Many cultural taboos are associated with the hogan and its use. Should a death occur in the structure, the body is
either buried in the hogan with the entry sealed to warn others away, or the deceased is extracted through a hole
knocked in the north side of the structure and it is abandoned and often burned. A hogan may also become taboo for
further use if lightning strikes near the structure or a bear rubs against it. Wood from such structures is never reused
for any other purpose by a Navajo.
Today, while some older hogans are still used as dwellings and others are maintained for ceremonial purposes, new hogans
are rarely intended as family dwellings.

Pterodactyl (derived from the Greek words πτερυζ (wing) and δακτυλος (finger) meaning winged finger, wing-finger or
finger-wing) is a common term for some types of pterosauria or (flying lizards), especially the later (mainly late
Jurassic or Cretaceous) shorter-tailed examples. They belong to the sub-order Pterodactyloidea. The wing was a leathery
skin covering, over the forelimb. Many specimens preserve a coat of fur.
Prehistoric flying reptiles are sometimes referred to as dinosaurs but this is strictly incorrect. The dinosaur term is
more correctly restricted to the upright-stance terrestrial reptiles, therefore including neither the flying reptiles
nor the aquatic reptiles, such as Ichthyosaurs, Plesiosaurs and Mosasaurs. (Pelycosaurs such as Dimetrodon are also
commonly confused with dinosaurs but are strictly-speaking a separate category.)

Important examples of pterodactyls are: Pterodactylus, Dsungaripterus,
Pteranodon and Quetzalcoatlus.

Fantastic Literature_,
and _Witchcraft in the Southwest: Spanish and Indian Supernaturalism on the Rio
Grande_ by
Marc Simmons which has a wonderful photograph of a trio of Mexican witches from
1895.
This book will dovetail nicely into a new cluster of Ethnographic witchcraft
texts I am slowly collecting. Nowhere near as large as my Head-hunting
collection, but I'm
not even really trying at this point.

Fact: One of the laborers today was a student of Chinese. He was 22. The other
laborer
is a well-known local guitarist named Darren but I don't know the name of his
band.
He helped me move my old 36 television into the basement and would not accept
the $20 I offered him because I have so few male friends and there's never
really
any context for me to ask for physical assistance with moving stuff. I thought
that was
pretty nice of him. At one point during the day we all had a long talk about
the film

White King, Red Rubber, Black Death
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0404551/
which is essentially about the cover-up of the realities of life in the Congo
during Leopold II's reign etc, which is where Conrad got his Heart of Darkness
story from. What was odd, Is that I saw another documentary about the problem
with the Nile Perch in Lake Victoria who had the same African Historian in it
but who isn't listed at all on the IMDB web-page which sort of pisses me off.

http://www.commondreams.org/views06/0416-24.htm

In the movie, a longish section is about how the children take the styrofoam
boxes
and melt them down along the shores to sniff the glue.. This makes them sleep
very deeply, so many people go and find the sleeping children in order to
sodomize
their sleeping bodies. The same narrator does both films or at least I'm pretty
sure
it was the same guy. The Nile Perch film was so depressing I had to turn it off.
It was that bad. South Indians are completely exploiting this area to the
ruination
if the environment etc. I say that, because that's a prominent feature in the
film, though
I'm sure there's more complexity to it if I could have stood to watch it more,
but actually
seeing little kids huddled around little kettles of melting styrofoam just
about made me
gag so I turned it off.

Yesterday Grace was telling me about a friend of hers, another Californian
Native American
who was actually a special type of Apache shaman, one of the gender ambiguous
types.
She was describing his clothing which I found very interesting. I guess he also
had some chemical
issues and died.

Vlad came over today, and he started a long diatribe against the Jews. He has a
very Czech way
of looking at things, and I tried to point him in the direction of Israeli
nation bad like more or less
most nations, and Jew more or less variable.. He seem to agree with this,
though he held deep
reservations about the basic character of the average jew: They are not
craftsman, they build nothing,
They are scumbag.. I can't help but love the way he calls folks he doesn't like
scumbags..
Vlad is a mailman, and one hell of a craftsman in a sense.

Today I finally found a decent Medusa Bust. She looks confused, sad, anxious,
and tragic.
She's sitting next to my cheapo chinese lamp in front of the printer on my
scandinavian cherrywood
faux veneer desk.

The Fetishist and the Iconoclast are like two sides of a coin, but the funny
thing is,
they are also both their own other. The fetishist is an iconoclast of the image

and the Iconoclast's Iconoclasm is a fetish. Go figure.

This is basically why I think art and poetry are sort of bullshit. I mean I get
stuff
out of it, but really, any leaf is as good as a rembrandt or better, and
listening to my
Mom talk (or anybody really) is just as interesting as Shakespeare at least to
me.
I know there are perils with the radical democratization and flattening of

I think alot of people have had negative experiences with people of a
particular race or think they have.
Personally, I've never had a straight dope deal with a black person in my life,
and I've tried many times.
Every single time I've ever tried to buy weed or hash off a black person
they've been dishonest.
It's not racism, it's a fact. I don't hold it against them.

Racism is part of a massively complex vectoring of Realpolitik. Whatever I
think about it seems
highly irrellevant. Racism exists. I try to gently steer people away from it,
to offer alternatives
and basically to be compassionate toward their state of confusion for the concept of
race is
nothing but a form of confusion, a confusion of morphologies, a confusion of perceptions, a
confusion of polarities, etc, etc..

I particularly like Armand Marie Leroi's Book _Mutants: On Genetic Variety and
the Human Body_
and Leonard Cassuto's _The Inhuman Race: The Racial Grotesque in American
Literature_

While some of us roll and grunt in labia, others must roll and grunt in

Scumbag = Filth:

everything is filthy in nature
George Bataille is the filthiest of all
he has that Catholic aura loved by Lacan
they shared women together
a woman shared them or was it, no it wasn't
Sartre and Beauvoir, what a beautiful sight
Rita Heyworth the lady from Shanghai
could only speak something else when no one looked
everyone looked at Rita Heyworth, so what
does this have to do with filth? nothing except
what just about anything else had to do with etc.
nothing's clean anywhere, not a speck in place
or rather specks on specks, what a spectacle!
nature's what is filthy, isn't it now?

There is also the layering of paradoxes:

I've always felt that Bob Marley has produced some of the most spiritual music
ever produced.

Big Tree, Small Ax,
Mr. Brown

you may know the stuff..

The religious tradition this comes out of is a mutation of Judaism.
In the field though. Rastafarians are rabidly anti-gay.

It's always something.
Is there some structural reason why minds can't be flooded with complete
understanding?
This is why I raise the issue of the Contraries, or a kind of dialectical
pluralism. Blake
actually provides two models of this kind of dialogue in _The Marriage of
Heaven and Hell_.
The first insists on the structural necessity of the contraries that can
never be reconciled,
and whose conflict is necessary to the progression of human existence: these
two classes
of men are always upon the earth, and they should be enemies; whoever tries to
reconcile
them seeks to destroy existence. The second model is one of conversion, in
which the angel
becomes a devil, and agrees to read the bible in its infernal or diabolical
sense. If one uses
the second sense to study the first, we make both our love and hatred of mere
images
contraries in a dialectic of iconology.

Now this is the rub. How willing are we to concede that life is a mere image.
In every succeeding
generation of technical innovation both positive and negative, this idea is
becoming more and more
the objet petit a, to use the Lacanian term of our distress, a kind of purely
paradoxical engine,
a new monster, the new minotaur that we have given birth to in the labyrinth of
 Techne'..

when I was standing in line at the video store with my

awful (though I love Bill) to do Canetti's Death of

look up Canneti's ouvre to make sure, and sure enough
it wasn't there.. Not sure why I thought he had written
that, but I did see this which sort of fit:

Komoedie der Eitelkeit 1934 (The Comedy of Vanity)

Is there a famous novel about the Trial or Death of Socrates?
I thought Canetti had written one..

Canetti writes Every command consists of momentum and sting.

of a Turkey buzzard calculating the weight of her little dog..

Earlier that evening

http://www.pica.org/tba/tba06/detail.aspx?eventid=67

The show on Vietnamese birth defects and the innocent victims of our poisonings following our lovely war there made me
cry and Kara nearly vomitted.

but then we got eroticized watching Marina Abramovic's Balkan sexything
movies.. some of this based in real ritual.
http://www.pica.org/tba/tba06/detail.aspx?eventid=63
http://www.pica.org/tba/tba06/detail.aspx?eventid=45

Then we met a German performance art group (I forget their name!) and I had my Chakra fixed by Apollo/Ra and the
Dionysius/Bike Messenger.

To thank them I read them a few lines I had had Kara transcribe on the way to
the show that had been rolling around
in my head for two days. I also showed Apollo my 15th Century carnival badge I wear on my green 100% Hemp fibre Lenin
cap

which depicts a fish faced man peeing into a butter churner while he churns it,
and both he and the churner are riding
a giant fish like a surfboard. Here's the lines I pronounced upon the German
Apollo/Dionysius:

Oh, the endless, ageless bliss which
speaks its labyrinthine name
through these shattered monsters!

Let it
laurel our Seizurina
of imperator air!

They both liked it and asked me who had written it. I told them my Ford truck
had written it
in my mind as I drove to work one evening which seemed to make them chuckle.
Dionysus
was smoking incense through a giant hookah.

We went and watched a Theo Angell film which for a while became my favorite art
film ever.
So good! Like a cross between Jodorowsky and Beuys.. A very odd and good use of
video compositing..
I would certainly like to have the knowledge to use whatever it was he used,
Avid, etc..
The dialogue was presnted like poetry onscreen, like a comic strip as well..

http://www.pica.org/tba/tba06/detail.aspx?eventid=46

What's funny late last nigt I put on Barbarella,
and still just love it, when she salutes her president
and just says,

Love..

Love (Kara rolled her eyes..)

Love (whatever, I don't)

I'd certainly rather have flower power, than generations of
horribly deformed Iraqi's to look at..

Apollo was all painted gold
and had a baseball cap with the eye of Ra
and he was smoking a cigarette.
Maybe even Divinity has a few bad habits..

This is my Apollo. He's just a working joe.
He offerened me some bread and wine,
but I was already full on Tandoori chicken and saag
and a Kingfisher beer.

I'll say it again and make a little hyle itlure

its from a painting i did
which was completely abstract color field painting
until i went back over it with a sharpie and found little faces
and animals and such
this lion
it almost looks like a ren and stimpy cartoon
with a funny pony tail sticking straight up in the front
and two pink human feet instead of rear paws
he's got crazy googly eyes
and an open mouth of dismay

the rest of poem
is a kind of recapitulation of the way
i use my own mental ruts as a sort of light (read radiation)
to put through new filters
to see what comes out

and i stole something from one of your recent pieces!

most of my recent work all of it most likely could be replaced with Lurch's

that's about all i'm getting at the moment just one long everpresent

and the synthetic, a synthjective pleroma whose
foundational model is the Eukaryotic cell itself
which undulates between symbiosis and parasitism, peace

pure paradox, built and powered

Re: Bastion Flex, Starring Flava Flav, Sly Stallone, and Most Particularly H. P. Lovecraft

2006-09-16 Thread phanero

This is a curious piece Allen, and reminds me of the odd aesthetic inversions
of Roussel's plays. For example the 'why' of selecting Alfred Magdalou's
'ouvre sans pretensions' for its having been written on a picnic menu
with an experimental pigment.

and then to snuggle that kind of thing up to Lovecraft's finicky-ness
which is arguably illustrated by his love of Irvin S. Cobb's Fishhead.

So I guess I'm reading the piece as a kind of hologram of its own
'programme' or some such

thoough i didnt intend to, and am certainly off its soundtrack.

finicky was the velvet monkeywrench in this case.

i'll refrain from my flava flav story.

he striking word maintained its shape: cicada. this collectible word wrapped
around the vision of an insect selected
by Lovecraft to overcome the parental, pre-boiled world, stop closing out
voice, and

finally. finally in the previous sentence establishes a fault line, which, when
ruptured, expends a monumental tsunami
into ghastly orbit and forthright destruction while in witness. so people,
consumed in their neighbouring water, file
out, out and

intrinsic. thus language at all times, curious and subject to logic, but not
exactly controlled by logic, tho logic
says extremity meets fulfillment, tho this can only be conjectured by a logic
intuited natively or not at all: thus a
sentence at its own.

forests of cicada, quivering inside the effective season, then dolour of rest,
extinction being possible only in
selected spans of time, with resumption a cardinal proposition to derail any
human thought over and above the radiant
line (imagined): it seems enough to declare that statements occur naturally.

witness Flava Flav.

Lovecraft actually wraps around the dull finicky, and when doing so, legions
upon legions, thru casements invented for
the purpose, going buggy if not corrected slightly for atmospheric conditions.

what the hell? muttered Flava Flav, reasonably enough.

later examinations will produce enough proof of Lovecraft's positive control.
whisperers in the woods of Vermont flew
to the Earth on Wings of Song, granted a particularly icky song, twitchy and

enough cheese to bungle the whole prop. Flava Flav can rationalize his own
synthesis with some edgy proclamation
derived from culture's learned choices. he calls Sylvester Stallone, who isn't
so celebrated now, but star quality
mixes with a tremendous impact, always, even enormous bugs from space. the call
gets thru:

worry me my man, is that you? come to think of it, perhaps a bottle of Moët,
pounding the beach, what's the latest?

dubious for sure...

the reader now must make a choice if that choice has not yet been made: what
story must be selected from these
possible inquiries, and

why bother,

and is attachment congenital,

and do sensible narrations savour us?

and so forth. if you have read this far, tripping over everything, did you
survive, or should the writer?

Flava Flav Indices rank it all, and will come to conclusions.

Mad Sally has gone nuts for youtube, the Web site where people post a
wide array of videos. It's becoming sort of the new meeting place of
the weird and wonderful. Sally has been posting videos of the Pirate
Guys, and she's been building a following. Today one of her videos was
honored as one of the day's best comedy videos.

You can see them by going to our site -

* Any Danish Parties?

Our friend the Castaway Wench is traveling in Europe and will be in
Copenhagen on the 19th. And she wants to know if there are any parties
going on in the Danish capitol.

Let us know if you hear of anything and we'll pass the word on to her.
Because she's looking for pirates wherever she goes! If you meet her,
write to Mad sally at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and tell her about the
encounter, and she'll post the information on the Castaway Wench's
blog.

* No New York For Us

Don't bother looking for us in the Big Apple this week. That journey is
off. We were going to tape an appearance on the new shrink show - Dr.
Keith Ablow. They wanted to do an episode on what it's like to be on a
reality TV show, and the episode would have put the Buccaneer Baur
family in the Big Apple for Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Sadly, the Ablow show has been unimpressive in its initial episodes (a
polite way of saying the show blows chunks), so a new producer decided
they needed more drama, more tension, more Dr. Keith fixing broken
families. We decided they needed to go to hell, because we're not
broken and don't need fixing. We're pirates. If you have a problem with
that it's your problem, not ours.

So, no free trip to New York, no book reading event, no NY media or
dropping in at the bar, Otto's Shrunken Head, where they're holding a
big TLAPDay party. At least not this year.

But if you're in New York, definitely drop by Otto's Shrunken Head, 538
E.14th St., and give a shout out to our agent, Scott, who plans to be
in attendance. And maybe our editor at NAL, Liz, will be there as well.
She was recently voted hottest editor in the book biz, so you want to
meet her. Remember, the party starts at 10 p.m. and features a couple
of pirate bands.

If you're not in NY, visit our calendaarrr page -

* Pirates Vs. Ninjas

Don't forget to cast your vote in the online debate to answer that
age-old question - Pirates or ninjas? Go to our home page -
http://talklikeapirate.com/piratehome.html - and scroll down to the
link for the pirates vs. ninjas page. Hurry! As of this writing pirates
are ahead, but it's closer than it should be. I think those ninjas are
sneakin' up on us!

* Build a cubicle cannon

Our friend hevnsnt has posted the instructions for making a cannon that
can be fired from your office cubicle on Talk Like a Pirate Day. The
cannon is made of a film cannister, a lighter, Binaca and some other
interesting things.

Look for it at http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/239/48/

So there's a special shout-out to hevnsnt for the coolest creation
we've seen in a while.

Just a reminder that our summer-long contest, Buccaneer Bachelor, will
conclude Tuesday with the announcing of the wench who has captured the

entries have been submitted and will be posted online before the end of
the day.

'secret camera' is interesting. (she looked like she knew she was being filmed.)
makes it more lurid to call it that and made me chuckle, but really
the curator reminded me of one of my best friends Ib. She did Seances for years.
I wonder if they'd let you film in the Mutter museum? I did their calendars

Re: sexuality in performance and video

2006-09-19 Thread phanero

I was very proud to see some parents taking their children, maybe 9 to 11 to
Marina Abramovic's
work at the PICA show.. the most disturbing image i suppose was the frame which
showed a woman
whose hair was covering her face repeatedly ramming a skull between her
breasts, her breath through
continuous action produced an odd visual echo of the female sex organs in the
structure of her hair.
the skull became for me a kind of phallic recapitulation of death's pounding on
our emotions, our 'heart'..
but this became other things as well, structures of support, the materiality
and unresolvability of representation
etc. These are amazing films I thought and worked well.. the sex/death theme is
somewhat of a cliche'
to the theorist and or average reader of theory, but as I found out with Kara,
she had no such circuit
and didn't 'get' the skull image, didn't associate the pounding of the skull
into the chest with a sexual act
etc.. To her my explanation seemed rather oblique and yet it came fully formed
to my mind as a kind
of gestalt or cathex or mileux or plateau.. I've just ordered a book about
Roman perceptions of sexuality.

Looking at Lovemaking: Constructions of Sexuality in Roman Art, 100 B.C.-A.D. 250
by John R. Clarke

Rather than enjoy erotic images in private, the Romans placed scenes of lovemaking
on everyday objects and walls in public spaces. John Clarke discusses the different view
of sexuality these objects and their use implies. This is the first work to discuss ancient sexuality
emphasizing the evidence to be found in artifacts rather than in the literary record.

Christianity has deformed human sexuality as has everything else, at this point
I feel that human sexuality
and its contamination into the field of representation is mangled beyond
recognition and generally
is part of our basic social aporia.

like almost everything else, the cards are loaded against great breakthroughs
in these fields.
The average person and even the non-average person are at great odds to produce
anything
in this area which isn't somehow tainted with pathology of one sort or another
depending on whose
percieving a given perception. that being said, there are all kinds of positive
and natural nudity
and pornography sites, natural breast sites etc.. there are people trying to
produce a more wholesome
vision of pornography, but the darker drugs are out there, and many of them
appeal in one way
or another no matter their healthiness in relation to the society at large.

There's a lot of good books out there on these subjects. I read

Caught Looking: Feminism, Pornography, and Censorship (Limited 1st)
by Ellis, Kate Et Al-Editors

many years ago and I think it frames the issues fairly well. I may still have
this
floating around somewhere. Its not a big book, and the theory is pretty soft
but rational.

One of my gages recently is wearing my naughty carnival pins out. people are
really
intrigued by these sometimes and so shocked at their frankness. It really weird
to see
their faces when I tell them they are replicas from the 15th century..

As repressed as the middle ages were, there were some valves that we don't have.
We have drains. Big industrial culverts, whereas there was still some ludicism
left
in midieval representations left over from the classical.

Its the ludic which is missing, and the in your face, over the top
hierarchicalizing of sexual attractiveness
which has always been there I suppose, but just seems to like everything else
have its own mutation rate.

Whatever is 'really' going on with it, we have to consider that the effects in
the long run will be biological
and will drive cultural mutation in a plethora of ways, positive and negative.

Looking at the symbolism of the vagina dentata for example is interesting, as
it is a clever program
for dedifferentiating sexual dimorphism as an intiation into space and time and
landscape..
there are old maps out of these dungeons if one only knows how to read them..

thats what i get anyway..

interesting post alan.

Some notes on sexuality in performance, video, etc. (This is in part a
follow-up to a recent discussion elsewhere, and is hopelessly naive, 'off
the cuff,' but perhaps of interest anyway.)

First, it seems that sexual representation is overdetermined; the result
is it tends to dominate everything else. If I have a sexual work in among
a number of non-sexual ones, it's the sexual work that's remembered and
that actually forms the tenor of subsequent discussion. Our culture is too
confused and contradictory in relation to sexuality - it never resolves -
and sexual work can open a can of worms.

Second, there's a huge responsibility involved, ethically and psychologi-
ically, in terms of sexual or even nude

Sludge, Jury, and Executioner
Toxic waste dumping in Ivory Coast unleashes chaos

Chaos still reigns in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, a month after 400 tons of toxic waste were illegally dumped at 14 open-air
sites near residential areas. The black sludge -- petroleum waste containing hydrogen sulfide and hydrocarbons -- is
letting off fumes that have sickened tens of thousands, killed seven, and angered countless others. On Friday, irate
citizens protested by blockading streets with logs, old refrigerators, and burning tires (sure to enhance the air
quality). They also beat up the former transport minister and burned his car, and set aflame the home of the suspended
general manager of Abidjan's port. The government had resigned in the wake of the scandal; President Laurent Gbagbo
named a new cabinet on Saturday, with new environment and transportation ministers. The waste was shipped to the country
by a Dutch-based company on a Panamanian-registered ship and handed over to an Ivorian firm; the government is still
investigating who's responsible for the mess. French firm Seche began cleanup operations on Sunday, indicating that it
would take several weeks. The toxic sludge will eventually be shipped to Europe for disposal.

You deal with the theme of repulsion and attraction -- you show animals committing acts of violence and sexual acts. Are
you asking us not to look away from the reality of nature?

Well, partly that, and partly the animals are acting like people. Partly it's the way that all the animals in Alice in
Wonderland are rude. They are all presumptuous and rude and outrageous and idiotic, and they sort of anticipate the Marx
Brothers in the way that they act, sort of ridiculous, overturning of convention all the time. Sometimes it's just fun
to make the animals do things like that.

To show us our own behavior?

Space Monkey, 2001. Watercolor, gouache, ink, and pencil on paper. 59 1/2 x 36
inches.

Yeah, or to shuck off a cliché. There's a blatantly pornographic image of chimpanzees that I made that is telling a
sort of biological truth. It shows a female chimp with her genitals all swollen and a male chimp is on the ground. It's
a bonobo, actually, and they're the most sexual of animals, but it's a matriarchy and the matriarchy is enforced by
promiscuous behavior on the behalf of the females who blur lines of paternity by having so many different lovers that
the males no longer have any political power.

These female chimps figured out that if they had multiple partners, nobody could figure out whose kid is their kid and
therefore can't kill their rival's offspring. My feeling about it was that until you had these female primatologists out
in the field, you never would have found this out. The bonobo was an invention of feminism on some level. So, the
painting is called Space Monkey, which is a Patti Smith song, because I'm thinking Patti Smith is the reason these
monkeys were found, on some weird level, right? It's not just because I feel like painting a hard-on on a monkey. I had
a thesis that I was trying to work out in my own head and all the paintings that have that kind of behavior had a thesis
like that. It's not like this would be a better picture if one of the animals is fucking the other one -- they've got to
have a pretty good reason.

Goya's clothed and nude Maja's come to mind of course.
http://museoprado.mcu.es/imajas.html

and then there was the short fashion craze
I believe in the 17th century though perhaps it was
in the early 18th for women's court dresses to
expose the breasts.. this wasnt among the peasants.
I'm not sure of the reference definitively as to place.
It could have been the Austrohungarian lands, it may
have been Sweden. I can't remember.

In film terms. there's this:

Shortly after the Lumieres conducted the first public screening of a film (in December 1895), pioneering French
film-maker Georges Melies directed the very short B/W 'adult' film Après Le Bal (1897, Fr.) (After the Ball, Bath) with
one of the earliest nude scenes in film history. Reportedly around the same time, blue movie pornographer Eugene Pirou
pioneered the risque film (called smoking concert or stag party films) when he produced Le Coucher de la Marie (1896,
Fr.) in which Louise Willy performed the first strip tease onscreen -- the short film was directed by Léar (real name
Albert Kirchner).
The very first kiss on film was between a Victorian couple seen in the Edison kinetoscope The May Irwin Kiss (1896) (aka
The Kiss, or The Irwin-Rice Kiss in a filmed scene from the stage play The Widow Jones). This titillating short
20-second film, with a close-up of a kiss, was denounced as shocking and pornographic to early moviegoers and caused the
Roman Catholic Church to call for censorship.
And Eadweard Muybridge's primitive motion studies (from 1884-1887) included test footage with cinematic glimpses of
naked men and women. Lois Weber's and Paramount's 4-reel silent film Hypocrites (1914) featured full female nudity in
the guise of an unclad lady (Margaret Edwards) - 'the Naked Truth' - who occasionally appeared as a transitional plot
element between scenes.
Audrey Munson (a real-life model) first appeared artistically nude in George Foster Platt's controversial Inspiration
(1915) from the Mutual Film Corporation, as a sculptor's model. Munson also appeared nude in another silent film, Rea
Burger's 7-reel Purity (1916), in a dual role as a spirit figure and as an artist's nude model named Purity/Virtue.

Theda Bara: The Vamp and First Sex Symbol
Sex was portrayed in the earliest films as something exotic and foreign. The original vamp and first movie sex goddess,
the full-bosomed Theda Bara, starred in a number of early silents for the Fox Film Corporation - her first lurid, slinky
vamp appearance (and first lead role) was in Fox's melodramatic A Fool There Was (1915), in which she portrayed a
worldly, predatory woman who stole a married man away from his wife and child. Her most famous line in this film was:
Kiss me, my Fool! She became known as the wickedest woman in the world. Although she played other non-vampish roles,
her vamp appearances were destined to be the most lucrative.
Other suggestive, femme fatale vamp roles were in Herbert Brenon's Sin (1915), The Devil's Daughter (1915) - her third
vamp film, and in The Tiger Woman (1917). She was also most notably seen nearly nude with the contours of her breasts
held by two curving gold asps in her first film made in Hollywood - the very successful Cleopatra (1917). Bara's
'come-back' picture, The Unchastened Woman (1925), was a remake of an earlier 1918 film. [Most of Bara's films, however,
are currently unavailable because few of the film prints have survived.]

Other Early Silent Films and Their Sexy Film Stars:
For the most part, the silent years were not known for explicit sexual content.
However, there were some exceptions:
the first American feature-length sex film was Traffic in Souls (1913) (aka While New York Sleeps) - it was a
photo-drama expose of white slavery at the turn of the century in NYC, although the film exploitatively promised
steamy sex in its advertisements; this was one of the first films to understand that 'sex sells' although its producers
worried that a 'feature-length' film wouldn't be successful; another vice film with the same historical theme of
revealing the world of prostitution was The Inside of the White Slave Traffic (1913); Damaged Goods (1914) and The Sex
Lure (1916) were similar melodramatic, exploitation films advertised as containing the Shocking Truth

A Free Ride (1915) was reportedly the earliest-known silent stag ('men only') or pornographic film - with explicit sex
scenes

Australian-born swimming and diving champ Annette Kellermann (the Esther Williams of the silent era) caused a stir
when she was seen naked with her flowing hair under a waterfall in director Herbert Brenon's and Fox's fairy-tale

Notes for a B-Film: Sacred Flesh Temple of the Rainbow Rakshasas

2006-10-02 Thread phanero

Notes for a B-Film: Sacred Flesh Temple of the Rainbow Rakshasas

Far Future Rakshasa Movie.

First Scene: The Flesh Temple. 'Exotic looking' curvilinear temple made of
living flesh
surrounded by a vast plain of unbounded varieties of succulents, luminous,
carnivorous, gigantic,
bulbous, sinewy etc.

Close shot: A small procession of Rakshasa priests are walking up a serpentine
path
to one of many yonilingam shrines scattered around the bigger more bulbous part
of the temple.
These Rakshasas look like elegant rainbow colored yetis, each and every hair on
their furry bodies
is like a continuous and banded color change reminiscent of a dna test chart or
navaho rug etc.
the total effect is one of raucus chromatic profusion.

as the priests enter the inner chamber, one sees the yonilingam. a totally
sensual extension of the temple
the large blunt fleshy phallus' coronal duct is a stylized yoni. the Rakshas do
the libation thing, blow some incense
etc. at the end a tiny rakshasa comes out through the hole. it is a single
color. this fully proportionate tiny rakshasa
is like a data token which is taken to another part of the temple. not sure
what happens to it.

Problem:

The Rakshasas hairs are data fibers, like organic digital quipu. Scenes of a
library of Shag.
Big prayer spools of spliced single hairs thousands of miles long threaded
through sensorial ciliated reader depressions
along the dorsal ridge of the Rakshasa skull. the library would look like an
elaborately threaded spindle cock or
sewing maching with the Rakshas chanting quiety while these spool fibers
enacted a kind of linear holographic
chemico reading movie..

Definitely some Rakshasa sex -scenes. Not sure how to handle it. Maybe the
Rakshasa genitalia more plant-like
and involves focused heat exchange by thermal rays. like their genitalia would
by like a flower which shoots a heat ray
onto another flower then blasts some spore darts which are info-drugs.. maybe
not, too graphic.
maybe just a tumble of hairy forms through a bilk silk pillow labyrinth and
lots of low Surbahar music.

Conflict:

Aquatic insectoid gorilla attack? hmm, perhaps a philosophical dispute between
the head priests?
A natural disaster? No conflicts! just a documentary explication of the
morphology and mystery
of the building and the symbiotic Rakshasa inhabitants.

Note:

The little Rakshasas could be special catalogues avail within the library, like
little homunculoi sutras,
their hairs would be read alive through special grooves designed differently.
like koans maybe each sutra-rakshasa
would actually attach to the reader like a barnacle until the message was done
then the Rakhomunc would dissolve.

My least and every scribble illustrates the divine perfection.

Re: Alan's recent work.

2006-11-06 Thread phanero

i can be frank with you. one of those pieces really did something to me that's
hard to describe.
i think it was the one with both maude and foofwa. the sound was very
important. hearing the
labor behind those images, hearing their labored breathing became something
really important.
not just artifice, but how labor is beneathe the surface, how worlds pass
through membranes, or something.
and also there was a modulation of sexuality in myself watching those that's
i've never experienced.
i barely have the words to describe this. those twitching meaticons seemed to
enter into my mind
free of any explicit worlding, free of gender, not just polymorphous
perversity, but something indefinable,
more akin to substance 'down the pike' a consciousness in the limbs? some kind
of semiotic micro/macro
recapitulation of origins and present. culture/culture. substance through time. body as culture. and then there were
flashes

of internal narrative firing, sort of like what one might suppose might be
behind some of those Burroughsian
descriptions like in Soft Machine, this is me not Burroughs, but things like
his skin peeled off in wisps
leaving the insect tremor of a fading junk nausea, a mirrored smoke pretending
to be human pleasure.
stuff like that, i'm just paraphrasing badly. i didnt know whether i wanted to
masturbate or cry, very moving,
i didnt need to do either, just sat there enthralled by a new kind of flesh
music. those breathing sounds
splicing into my thoughts like interruptions both wanted an unwanted..oddly
post-polaric, mesmeric,
an oddly displacing realness of the virtual, i really think these pieces kind
of act like what the film
video-drome was sort of vulgarising. flesh-texts. Something Burroughs can't
quite get to either, except
through narrative, and things like cronenberg's film Existenz move through
narrative as well. But these
touch on pure figure, pure contagion, pure innocence, this is like a marionette
theatre of the grotesque
whose stage directions are the ontic shifting units of discrete intuition writ
large. the little machines
the dancers have built are echoes. this allows all kinds of comparisons and
differences to emerge.
'informance' instead of 'performance.' and at some level these are purely
descriptive of event as being.
a purely wordless example of demonstrative philosophy, post-philosophy,
post-aesthetic aesthetics.
As if the dancer's generosity in imagining those movements, that bridge might
be the fuzzy paradigm
of a new ethic. bodies closing the gaps beyond words, fuzzy solutions, virtual
incarnation, frankly
those pieces just left me rather speachless for several days alan.

i thinnk this is some of the best work i've seen so far. this has certainly got
to be some of the highest art
of the decade, the most meaningful etc. it should establish you as one of the
most important practitioners.
you've completely merged all the fields to the best of your ability. maybe i'm
partial to this, and maybe
there are more materially advanced expressions haptic etc. this is natural
language. like giving as a hermeneutic
echo. i dunno, but having dancers mimic (not mimic, but give back, mimic is
far too cold) those inchoate
'figures of submerged series' is just like lightning through the brain!!! just
really seemed like a major
culmination of your project and proves your total focus and vision. you have
threaded the kairos
to create a true innovation which is unique and absolutely personal and
post-personal. and then there's
the whole symbolism of being in geneva as well. its really endless. i loved the
interview
w/ maude as well. she is so alarmingly intelligent. i couldnt get hardly any of
it.. but it seemed
like she was talking about poetic physiognomies.

i can't praise it enough! I think you should be very satisfied with this trip.

deploy, he said, the devouring powers of light

all natural languages have precisely the same degree of complexity.
'destroy, she said', 'primitive, he said', 'enjoy, he said', 'deploy,
she said.'
to deconstruct is neither to analyze nor to take apart.
http://www.asondheim.org/eatenbylight.mp4
you can't argue with an aphorism.
'code' is more than structure, structure is more than substructure,
substructure is more than equivalence, organism is less than code.
throw out everything you know about animal behavior and culture;
humans are just beginning to discover civilization.
our knowledge is not our own.
humans construct the only deliberate, calculated, and universal
slaughter-house.
everything an enemy, every enemy a thing.
take the man from the woman and kill him.
binary oppositions replace cultural capital with economic capital.
there are dozens of types of war and at any time we are engaged
in at least a quarter of them.
do not ask for whom the bell tolls; ask who made the bell.
an aphorism makes the man.
reality is imaginary's monotonic.
or the romanticism of the real is the classicism of the imaginary.
projection kills and introjection devours.
or introjection suppurates and projection wounds.
murder is wild war.
if i want a word with you, the word i want is 'you.'
give away your sex and there goes your reputation.
give away your reputation and here comes your sex.
public masturbation constructs the truth of the real for audience and
masturbater alike.
faunal extinction takes humans home.
sex kills and slaughter entertains.
eroticism is the neocon of sexual war.
the aphoristic is the final refuge of the defeated.
aphorisms are always otherwise.

throw out everything we know about the future of the human race:
there isn't any, anything recognizable.
throw out everything we know about animal behaviour and culture:
we're blind and will remain so, driving species to extinction.

these are the truths brought to us by dance and culture:
dance and culture brings Signs from Worlds eaten by light.
dance and culture have no territory:
Worlds disappear, tethered to exhausted Signs.

*/
At first I thought this period is the end of prehistory, that history only
begins with the definitive event of the large-scale disappearance of hu-
mans across an earth ruined by nuclear, chemical, and biological warfare.
The future of history is hyperhistory; all other histories meander through
fractured sememes destined to disappear.

Then I thought this period is the beginning of prehistory, towards the
potential of the mute, the moot point, the unacknowledged pivot or hinge,
the elimination of all evidence of the pivot, which after all is spread
across space and time, reaching far behind us for example, extending far
ahead of us for example. This prehistory may be followed by nothing in
terms of familiar inscription; it may be followed by a superfluity of
familiar inscription; it may be all or nothing, open or closed.

But whether or not this is the end or beginning of prehistory, it is the
continuation of the brute, inert, violence of our existence, scabbing and
devouring beyond the carrying-capacity of the earth - it is the continua-
tion or the end of our existence, the violence itself carrying-on, residue
far beyond lifespans, half-lifespans, sintering of the remnants of debris.

PHYSICS NEWS UPDATE
The American Institute of Physics Bulletin of Physics News
Number 800 November 9, 2006 by Phillip F. Schewe, Ben Stein,
and Davide Castelvecchi www.aip.org/pnu

COHERENT EXCITON MATTER has been reported by a UC San Diego group.
They say their cold swarm of excitons acts like a Bose-Einstein
condensate (BEC) but might also be some new kind of quantum
condensate in which many particles act as if they were a single
entity. Excitons are artificial tiny paired objects adrift in a
semiconductor and consist of an electron excited from its home
orbital plus a vacancy left behind. The negatively charged electron
and the positively charged hole are bound to each other and will
usually, after a nanosecond or so, recombine, an event which knocks
the electron back into its home band and releases a tiny parcel of
light. This is how light emitting diodes (LEDs) produce their
illumination. In the UCSD experiment, the excitons live much longer
than usual--long enough to study as if there were a species of
atom--since the pair partners are held somewhat apart in nano-size
structures (quantum wells) in the body of the semiconductor sample.
The excitons can move about in the plane of the quantum well
semiconductor structure and, in a 20-micron-wide ring, constitute a
sort of gas which can be cooled down to ultralow temperatures. When
chilled below 5 K, this gas began to show signs that it had
spontaneously condensed into a kind of quantum coherent state. Just
as atomic BECs (in which atoms are cooled to the point where their
matter waves overlap and become, in effect, a single coherent
quantum system) are imaged by releasing the atoms from their
confining magnetic fields, so in this case the exciton condensate
reveals itself by telltale photons. The photons, coming from the
annihilation of electrons with their hole partners, leave the ring
area, enter an optical device and, in the form of waves (which are
proxies
for the original excitons), produce a high-contrast interference
pattern, suggesting the coherent nature of the exciton gas.
Furthermore, the contrast of the interference fringes provides the
coherence length--about 2 microns (images at
http://ucsdnews.ucsd.edu/graphics/images/2006/exciton06_bg.jpg ).
San Diego researcher Leonid Butov ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
believes
that controversy has surrounded previous reports of exciton
condensates and believes the new results are particularly clear in
displaying an interference pattern and in demonstrating quantum
coherence. Like others who study coherent matter, Butov predicts
that practical
quantum devices will follow from this line of research. (Yang et
al., Physical Review Letters, 3 November 2006; UCSD press release at

MEASURING ABSOLUTE MAGNETIC MOMENTS. As long ago as Lord Kelvin's
time, a century ago, scientists recognized that a change in magnetic
environment could alter a material's electrical resistance. Back
then this was a 5 percent effect. By the 1990's, however, if the
material consisted of a sandwich of alternating magnetic and
nonmagnetic films the effect could amount to as much as 60 percent.
This giant magnetoresistance is now the operative mechanism behind
much of hard-drive and tape data storage. By forcing the tiny
induced electric currents to jump across insulating layers as it
passes from one magnetic layer after another, the change in
resistance can be as high as 400 percent. This translates into data
storage densities as high as 300 billion bits per square inch.
Fabio da Silva of the University of Colorado at Denver and Health
Science Center ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and his colleagues at the
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder,
Colorado now employ the magnetoresistance effect not to store data
but to study the very process by which the tiny domains in the
storage medium are magnetized in the first place. Using anisotropic
magnetoresistance (AMR), in which the resistance of the sample
changes when the magnetic material is remagnetized in a direction
different from that of the flowing current, the researchers could
measure the fundamental magnetism of the tiny (4-micron) domain
itself. They hope these results can serve as a reference for
calibrating conventional magnetometers, devices that measure
magnetic fields in objects ranging from consumer electronics devices
to geophysical specimens. These results are being reported next week
at the AVS (vacuum science) symposium in San Francisco. (Wednesday,

i did a phanorama image, now i don't remember what it was based on but
judging from the result, i don't know, it could be a lot of things, i
think it's the view from the ancient hercules tower, but then i see a
lot of sheeps, at the beach, looks like some kind of radar image,
ultrasound. well all these things are one, like when we sleep, the
panorama, see without moving your eyes, see/moving dddkkk

I've been working it on it since about 8, but it isn't very stupid!
I have gotten maybe 3 random joins and they were terrible!
I'm about to go to bed. but I think I'll do the garage next..

I actually had one 'okay' one, but really it wasnt all that
 interesting.
I tried things that were similiar, like I did a series of an out door
fireplace thinking it would join on something arbitrary, but it
didnt work at all! Its pretty quirky.

i'll give it a shot in the morning after work.
and try to use some smaller images maybe. sorry about the crashes.
i load in 10-15 meg images into mozilla regularly.

I'd be curious to see the results of this, thanks.
