Dear Saralou,

Good questions you've got...

You'd think that doubling the volume should only double the brewing
time, but if you're still only adding an ounce from the previous batch,
you've probably pushed yourself *way* back on the current vs. time
curve. It starts slow and gets faster with time, in an exponential
curve...

Try another batch with *2* ounces from the previous batch and see if it
takes a similar amount of time as the old batch size.

I don't know...

That will take even longer. Still, think about leaving it overnight or
longer. As long as it can make the CS faster than you use it, you're
good.

> Q: Will heating the water in the microwave shorten the batch time?

Heating the water by any means will increase its conductivity and will
help the process start faster. Some people would warn you away from
using a microwave oven for anything. It is not healthy or safe,
according to those theories. Heat your jar in a pan of water on the
stove for the same effect without concern for microwaves.

Don't know. Probably not. Probably so. <GRIN>

> 2. Storage: *containers and length of time*. Q: Does it hurt the EIS
> to use clean plastic pop bottles?

Ol' Bob, one of our dearly departed experts strongly advocated PET
bottles such as soda pop comes in. I personally suggest that you find a
brand of spring water or drinking water that comes in the same kind of
bottles and use those. There's much less effort required to get the
taste of the original product out of the bottle.

> Q: Do I need to shield it from light?

Nope. Not if it's made with a 'puppy or similar current limited
generator.

> Q: Is there a rule of thumb for max storing time?

Keep as much on hand as you want, use the oldest, rotate stock. People
have reported storing it for a long time without apparent change.

> Thanks much. Saralou

You're welcome. Others may have things to add.

Be well,
