It can certainly be done if you're prepared to put the effort in. Bear in
mind that OSM isn't really an "end user" map website - it's a data project
where we encourage others to make the cool maps from our data.

I'd probably have done a waterway rendering myself by now were it not for
OSM's sucky licence. :(
