Late to the party, and not being local to New York, I vaguely recall the Local trains have circles and Express have diamonds (except on older cars, in which it'll have a red LOCAL light or a green EXPRESS light, but you're unlikely to see these unless there's a big holiday like the Fourth of July or Christmas, in which these older cars are usually decorated for the occasion as well).
