The cost cutting probably explains why I've seen them
go bad on Classics more often than SEs. When the SE
came out it was the second best in the Mac line (with
the II above it and the Plus and 512Ke below it). The
Classic was always the low end and it costs
considerably less than the SE.

And yes, you are right about the life expectancy. For
some reason it seems like 1989 was just a few days ago
to me. Maybe I'm just getting old...

Speaking of the 1987 Mac lineup, anyone have an idea
as to why the 512Ke was never changed to platinum yet
the Plus, IIe, and ImageWriter II were? The 512Ke held
on until September of that year, which was a good deal
of time after the platinum color was introduced.
