Thomas, These Performas had a problem with their ROMs that Apple was repairing for free until 2002. I believe it only occurs if you try to upgrade the OS beyond the one that originally shipped with it, which may have been Mac OS 7.5.3 You may need to replace your logic board with one that Apple has already repaired. When The computer boots up, it says 'The system sofware has detected a hardware problem. Extensions have been disabled. Contact Apple customer support or an Apple authorized dealer to have the Cache/Rom replaced.'
