Thomas,
These Performas had a problem with their ROMs that Apple was
repairing for free until 2002.  I believe it only occurs if you try to
upgrade the OS beyond the one that originally shipped with it,
which may have been Mac OS 7.5.3  You may need to replace
your logic board with one that Apple has already repaired.
Apple refers to it as the "Repair Extension Program" if you search
their support website:
