I guess that surround audio will be a problem even in professional audio studios, that were not made for surround listen. The periods of the sound waves, to the people on any place, in any cinema or living room, must be able to be estimated, resp. once you have done a mix and you will change a little bit, the surround panning needs some kind of auto-balance. We know different kinds of stereo pan pots, some will "keep in mind" the volume of the stereo sum. For stereo we check out how it will sound in mono, near field, on headphones etc., but I don't think it will be possible to check out the effects for surround sound in a homestudio, semi-pro and even pro-audio studio, I guess there will be the need to have special rooms for listening, that only less pro audio studios have. IMO it doesn't matter if any OS has the capability to do surround mixing for the studio in the box. I guess surround mixing needs more than a studio in the box.
