Hi :)

fortuitously I found out how to enable DVD-RAM access for my 64 Studio
2.1 amd64. I was going to enable data exchange for Linux and Windows XP
by DVD-RAM. For this, Linux does mean Suse, because no howto how to
enable it for Debian worked with 64 Studio 2.1.

First I installed the Panasonic DVD-RAM driver LG hack version to my
Windows XP. I formatted a DVD-RAM running Windows with UDF 1.5.

Than I booted into Suse 11.1 rc. No UDF tools or anything was installed
or edited, but anyhow I had read and write access to the DVD-RAM as user.

For earlier Suse versions I had to do some manually work and after that
only root was able to write and read DVD-RAM.

I googled and found a German link telling that kernel ex 2.6.x enable
DVD-RAM access by default.

Because my hardware isn't fine with audio production software for Linux,
I once compiled a kernel 2.6.24.7-rt17-rev01 for my apart from the audio
trouble, stable 64 Studio 2.1 vanilla install.

Right now I booted into the self compiled kernel and DVD-RAM is fine
without udftools or any manually work for 64 Studio 2.1 too.

To avoid problems, the link I found also recommends to use a kernel ex
2.6.22, but the default for 64 Studio 2.1 is 2.6.21.

If anybody wish to have DVD-RAM access too, just use a kernel-rt ex
2.6.22 and 64 Studio 2.1 will be fine with DVD-RAM. (There might be a
way to include the right kernel module to get it work with the default
kernel too, but I don't know how to do this and for Suse I often read
that also other people using Verbatime DVD-RAMs, which are not formatted
and have to be formatted, running older kernels, were not able to access
as user.)

I hope this information is a help for other users.

I still have got one problem. I can write a file to DVD-RAM by Windows
and read it by Linux, but once I accessed the DVD-RAM by Linux (I guess
after writing or changing permissions, I still have to check this),
Windows can't access the DVD-RAM any more, so I only can export data
from Windows to Linux, but not from Linux to Windows.

Cheers,
Ralf

detains me to add the public key by email, because these mails fail to

them as junk, without permission to do this.
