If you are compiling kernels on your own, you should probably build
something a little more recent than 2.6.22.  http://kernel.org and
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/rt/ are good places to
start.

There are better options (more reliable with a wider degree of
compatibility) than DVD-RAM.  USB mass storage is your friend.
