The best solution would be to have equipment that is able to playback 
linear and that has got buttons like "loudness" to adjust a good 
recording, to a not optimal situation for listening.

More realistic is, that different people, with different preferences, 
will listen with different equipment, in different situations.

My personal résumé is, that YES, Katz's book is good for some kinds of 
mastering and it might be the more qualitative way, as far as I know the 
book.

BUT, we shouldn't recommend techniques without taking care of different 
kinds of music.

There isn't the overall mastering technique. I don't think that classic 
and classic jazz is as common as popular music.
