Actually you are mistaken. The version of gcc changes with every Ubuntu
release. This can cause problems if you need to build 3rd party drivers
(nvidia and ati, various wireless device drivers, vmware, ffado, etc.).
You can use the same source for all the versions, but you need to
compile with the version of gcc used on the target platform. This
includes the gcc minor version number btw.

I am not saying that it will not work, only that there can be no
guarantees and the pain caused is often not worth the effort. As
someone who has used the nVidia, ndiswrapper and vmware modules since
their inception, I can tell you that this can be a major PITA. Of
course you are free to do as you wish.

In this particular case, if the user is using Ubuntu 9.04, have him just
install the Ubuntustudio packages. You do not need to add any sources,
the meta-packages install all the software that you need. They even
have their own RT kernel that is pretty much up to date. I have not
compared it to the 64Studio kernel since I almost always use my own
kernels on my Ubuntu (non-64Studio) machines.
