I have never gotten the why so many like/need/want/love or etc. IMAP.
What makes IMAP so great? In general, without comparing it to pop or
webmail?

shell access, where I can run Mutt

That sounds like what I want/need in order to give myself quasi-IMAP
functionality through gmail...
