For example, I want to check my gmail account from Thunderbird,
Outlook, and/or Evolution on OS X, Linux, and/or Windows. If it's
IMAP, then my changes are reflected across all of these clients I'm
checking from different locations.

With gmail, if I send an email, the only way that I can see that sent
email is to log on gmail.com and look through my sent folder.

Which you can do anywhere you have internet access. To send and email
with Thunderdbird, you need internet access.

I guess I'm just a big fan of web apps. Have a browser, on almost any
OS and you are good to go.
