First of all, he did give you a line of crap. I used to have SBC DSL. And I would not recommend it to anyone. I have had so much smoke blown up my rear by SBC it is not funny. If you have a 3mb line, as it can be done, it is not easy to run it at 100%. That would be a lot of constant, concurrent downloads running without end. Setting it lower did nothing but limit your bandwidth. He probably turned you down to 300k or 700k.
I have had 2 huge problems with them. The first was within a month of having their service, I was already getting spam. Considering the email address I chose, it is not one that could have been easily guessed. When the spam started arriving, there were only 2 people that knew my address, Me and SBC. I had not given it out to anyone which left SBC. They kept telling me that they do not give out email addresses. Since I never gave mine out, I wonder who did. My second problem with them was when my connection got so bad I could not load a webpage and download a file at the same time. If I was downloading a file, the webpage would time out. If I was loading a webpage, the download would timeout. SBC had the nerve to tell me that this was normal. After I told them that even on a 56k modem I could open several pages at the same time, and download several files at the same time, everything would appear. Granted it would be slow, everything would appear. The man then tried to tell me that I did not know what I was talking about and there was nothing wrong with the service. I guess having A+, Toshiba Associate Technician, HP Certified Technician, Dell Certified Technician, IBM Certified Technician, MS Outlook 2000, MS Outlook 2002 and, MS PowerPoint 97 certifications means that I do not know anything. Anyway, that is my $0.02 worth of experience. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, February 19, 2005 12:41 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] SBC line of crap ? Here's something weird that a tech told me from SBC. I have SBC DSL and he said the reason my connection to the DSL network keeps disconnecting is "you are using your 3 mb line at 100%" He then set it lower and now it takes 10 minutes to download a 15 mb file vs the 1 1/2 - 2 minutes or so it took before. I know I'm not a tech, but even that doesn't sound logical. Now if I am downloading from another server and try downloading a 15 mb file on AOL, it takes 20 minutes. I was also surprised that he was running a test and he said he had nothing to compare it to. It seems that there is not a DSL within a two block radius of me......
