Well what would have happened if Watt hadn't worked is just what you might
expect and what you might
ask is that, not to agree that Watt is indeed that because Watt is and always
will be Watt and not
that or even this for that matter. But if Watt had not worked at what he was
good at then there
might not have been any improvement to the steam engine. The centrifugal or
flyball governor, might
never have been invented and what you might ask is that? Furthermore, what
indeed would we ever
know about the feedback principle of servomechanism, linking output to input,
which is the basic
concept of automation.
It was Watt who first coined the phrase "horse power" because what Watt
calculated was what a horse
exerted, which was a pull of 180 lb., therefore, when he made a machine, he
described its power in
relation to a horse, i.e. "a 20 horse-power engine". Watt patented the first
efficient steam
engine, which after several designs lead to the birth of Stephenson's Rocket,
considered the first
locomotive in history.
Finally, what a lot of people don't realise is that if Watt had not existed, we
would have no watt
at all because the electrical unit, the watt, was named in honour of Watt and
what an honour that
must have been for Watt. So you see, Watt certainly knew what's what and
without Watt there would
be no watt and where might we be today without a watt ... so it is a good job
he worked!
