A Toshiba laptop was just given to me. It works and everything - Windows XP
loads and I get to desktop and can access programs, etc., but the darn thing
won't stay on! I have it plugged in to an outlet and all of a sudden it will
just shut off.

Hi:

Sounds like it is overheating. A very common problem with
Laptops. Try letting it sit turned on but doing nothing to see
if it will stay on. Make sure it is sitting flat on a smooth surface
with good circulation from underneath. And in any case do a
professional cleaning on it to get rid of all the dust. Hope
this helps.
