Here's what happened. I belong to a computer group that offers support
for accessibility technology for the visually impaired. One member wrote
in saying he had an elderly friend who was normal sighted and had a
problem. The guys niece set up a computer and gave it to this elderly
friend, When the friend booted the pc it came to the windows logon
screen and at that point it asked for the password for the
administrator, the only option. The niece set it up this way and
supplied the guy with the correct password. He tried the password but
windows xp wouldn't accept it. Apparently the niece was no support when
asked what to do. I suggested that since the pc hadn't been used yet to
simply reformat and start over. The two guys were scared off by this
approach and asked if there was some other way. I then asked my poorly
constructed question to the tech groups I belong to not realizing the
firestorm it was about to generate. One person in my assistive tech
group told the guy to use a Linux boot disk and even gave him the files
to copy to a floppy for this purpose. I have never done that so I again
suggested a reformat. Of course my method was not a quick fix like they
were looking for so I was ignored and the Linux floppy was the selected
option to resolve this matter. I have not heard back yet if it worked or
not.
Like I said, I am sorry for all the problems this post caused and want
to thank everyone for their help and support.
