Good morning :-).
I do not understand something. I have a My Book external drive
connected to my computer by a USB cable. I understood that the
computer would see this as another drive, and it does. Because of
past computer difficulties, I installed Eudora and Opera and
ScreenPaver on this drive, along with much of my data. ScreenPaver
works just fine.
However, I ended up moving Eudora to the C: drive because of
attachment issues, and am seriously considering moving Opera back to
completely on C: and F: drives. The last time I reinstalled Opera, I
put my preferences on the My Book drive, and everything else on C:
. Quite often now, Opera will quit trying to access the Internet,
even though I am connected. If I request a page, it simply sits
there, and only the time racks up. When I check my connection, it is
fine. ( I have dialup, but doubt that is the problem.) Of course
this is highly annoying at best, especially since Opera is my main
browser, and I usually have several pages and windows open. The only
way to correct the problem is to exit Opera completely, wait 30
seconds to a minute at minimum (so I don't get the error message that
Opera is already in use by someone else), and restart it.
It's possible that some of the problem is my internet connection,
but usually I can work with IE 6 and get a response most of the
time. But logging off and relogging onto the Internet does not
change things. I did not think that using an external hard drive
would make so much of a difference. Is it the length of time that
the information takes to get from the drive to the CPU and vice versa?
Thanks
Theresa
Things I am not sure, but you might need: I am running Windows XP
Home on an T6536 emachine with an AMD 64. About once a day the
computer reboots itself, the usual error message is that a device
driver was incompatible. About half the time Windows does not know
what the error was caused by, the other half it says the problem is
with Opera. I have 916848K physical memory, but I do have Zone,
Trend Micro for antivirus, and some antispyware/malware programs in
memory. Right now I am running Eudora, Word, OE, IE, Adobe Photoshop
Elements, Opera, task manager and Windows Explorer, with about 41448K
maximum left.
Gentlemen, I believe we have much to discuss.
