Theresa, I have some strongly held opinions on several of your points;
First make sure that your external USB drive is running at USB2 speed and not 1.1 (there's a roughly 40 time speed difference)! An external HD will always run MUCH slower than an internal drive, so even under the best of circumstances, you risk timeouts on the net. For that and some other reasons, it's always a not-so-good idea to run programs (any programs) from the external drive. Do not split up a program and any associated preferences, they should always snuggle. Otherwise they get lonely and cantankerous. And you know that a fearful and lonely mind is the Devil's workshop. I have used both Eudora and Opera and consider the first to be a clunky POS. And I use neither any more, having switched over to Mozilla's Thunderbird for e-mail and Firefox for surfing (and never looked back). Photoshop should always be run by itself, because it is a memory hog (especially if all you got is one GIG of RAM). And if you don't give it enough swap memory on the internal HD, you're begging for more difficulties. Why are you running Opera and IE at the same time (come to think of it, why are you using IE at all)? Doesn't make sense. Either shut down programs you're not currently using or get yourself another GIG of RAM and make sure you have plenty of space on the HD. Also, it's a good idea to set up your internal HD so you have XP on the C: partition, other programs on a second (D:) partition and your data files somewhere else. BTW, what do you do for your data backup? Different strokes for different folks but, I have my internal 300 GIG HD with 4 partitions (XP on C:, Programs on D:, data on E: and my music collection on F:). Once a week I Ghost that HD to my external 300 GIG USB drive. And then I sleep peacefully.
