Yes you can dual boot to more than one OS. In fact a few years ago a guy was
on the TV show The screen Savers [no longer on the air] who had installed
something like thirty or forty of them.
The most frequently added OS to Windows is probably Linux, and there are
many of them. The easiest way to do this is to download what is called an
ISO file of the Linux that you want. Most distros [that's what they call the
various versions of Linux, it's short for distribution.] now come in a live
version that will run from the disk without having to install it, try before
you buy. But you don't have to buy, as I said you can download the file to
create a bootable disk.
One of the most popular distros right now is 'ubuntu', that's an African
word meaning I think, community or something like that. A popular place to
go for Linux is:
http://distrowatch.com/
Or you can Google for Linux or a distro name.
As for dual booting, if you OS is XP you have to install Linux after XP is
installed. And to be safe you should probably back up your XP install or be
willing to have to reinstall it using the factory rescue disk. If your
computer is partitioned you want to make certain that C is large enough for
another OS. I always partition my hard drives so that my data can be saved
on a different partition from C. What I use to back up my C partition is
Norton Ghost. But there are other programs that can do it. In addition you
might want to try some of the Yahoo Linux groups.
