I have a Dell Dimension 4700. It has 1 gig of memory and a 3 gig P4
cpu.It is about 5 years old. I have never had a major problem with it.
I haven't done a reformat for a few years. I have to much data to
reformat and don't have an external hard drive. Reformat is my last
regrettable option.
My problem is that I installed Office business 2003. I removed my old
Office 2002. I got the Office 2003 from a friend who received an open
incensed version from his college. I don't have to enter a key. Well
the install went fine and I tried the additional programs that I
wanted from Office 2003 and they worked. The other day however I
wanted to use Word. It is the only program that has a splash screen.
Well, I couldn't get past the splash screen and it wouldn't let me
out. I had to reboot. On reboot, I opened Word again and got a screen
asking me if I wanted to open it in safe mood since it wasn't shut
down properly. I said yes and it came right up minus the splash
screen. This is the way it is working or how I have to use it. I
finally took it off and put my own version back on with the key but
now even that version is doing the same thing! I can't get past the
splash screen on Word but all the other programs work. The reason I
think it is a memory issue is that I have recently installed a few
audio editing programs and a couple imaging programs like Photo Shop.
I tried a restore back to the point before I installed the new Office.
When I click on any Office program however it tells me it is an
incorrect path. When I had Office 2003 on and right clicked on the
desktop icon for properties, it showed the target as grayed out.
Any suggestions gurus? I really hate to reformat. I did use MSCONFIG
to stop programs from running at start up but that didn't help
