Mick,

There are two aspects of what you need/want to save. The first is
data, your files that you don't want to loose, especially can't afford
to lose. This can be fairly easy to do, especially if you have an
external hard drive or cd/dvd burner. In the old days we only had
floppies to save our data on. We have way more options today. You
should keep your data files backed up.

The second concern is of course the OS and the applications. I always
want to be ready for the ultimate type of recovery, having to
reinstall the OS then reinstall the applications. That means you will
need a copy of the OS install and of the applications. These days most
computers come with rescue disks [or a rescue partition]. But if you
never need to restore your computer you could become complacent, even
not taking care of the install disks for your OS and your
applications. You might even want to make copies. And when you need to
use them use the copy. That way you know that they work AND you
subject the original disks to less wear.

OH, and don't forget drivers if your rescue disk is older than XP or
for some other reason you won't have drivers. You should go to the
site of the software/hardware site of the mfg. of your hardware.
Download the drivers and include them with the data that you back up.
