As I understand it Win2000 "can" be upgraded to XP Pro, but not to XP
Home. I dunno why you are getting that error. Microsoft used to have
an XP upgrade adviser on their site, but of course now it's become a
Vista Upgrade adviser. Maybe your XP disk is an OEM version and that's
why it won't let you upgrade. If it came with a major brand PC, then it
probably is.
Anyway, a full install is much better than an upgrade. It will be more
stable and less susceptible to crashes and blue screens. You'd have to
back up all your personal data because a fresh install will erase
"everything" on the hard drive.
If you decide to full install, set your PC to boot from the CD drive (if
necessary), pop the XP cd in the drive and boot. You'll see if your disk
allows a full installation. You'll have a multiple chances to exit
before doing the reformat.
