You can upgrade the same system from within the desktop but not change from
say 2000 to XP that way.

I knowthat statement is wrong, because I am typing on a system that I
upgraded from xp home to expro and never had a problem.  Put the cd in drive
and look at the console. that is exactly how I did mine.

  That is misinformation, you have to boot from the installation CD to do
  any kind of install whether it be upgrade or not, you can't run the CD
  from within Windows and do an upgrade.
