Actually, if you're in a wifi city (like Canandaigua or Geneva) you CAN tap into it while in the car. In fact, if you're willing to spend a bit more, you don't even need to worry about being in a wifi zone. Some cell companies have broadband access cards, that work kinda like a cell phone- but for internet. With these, as long as you're somewhere it can get a signal (basically, if your cell can get a good signal, your comp is probably happy too!)

There are places that have what they call WiFi, unfortunately I don't know much about them. I am retired and don't go places where I would need a laptop/notebook. In fact I don't like them because none that I have seen has an ergonomic kbd. The kind that have a sort of curved set of keys. I have big and somewhat clumsy hands and I have enough trouble typing accurately on the ergonomic, let alone a normal keyboard.
