so why can I search for things like google. if it is not a search engine. Also when I type Y into the address bar of mozilla and IE and hit send it goes to yahoo.

Yahoo has hundreds of pages all listed on search engines. Yahoo is not a search engine, it is a web site. Google is a search engine. For instance a 7 year old needing to look up info for school. But for any oher address you are looking for has to be typed in full such as www.wired.com. If I do not type it in like that then it will give me a search engine that will have possible matches.
