Does your cable company give you a router then with wireless capability?
If a router then the Ethernet would work but needed setting up. A wireless adaptor is not that expensive but if your Laptop is newish I would have though it had one already. She said I should get a wireless adapter. That was after she told me I needed to contact the laptop maker for installation instructions. So I figured this was just too much work for me right now, and didn't want to necessarily pay extra for a wireless adapter. The cable co. Told me that I could rent one for another few dollars each month, then the Walmart rep told me that I could buy a wireless adapter.
