Holly -

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't use just gmail for a couple of
reasons. #1 is I would have to be online, and that's something I'm
really trying to cut back on. I have gotten into the very bad habit of
letting one link lead to another and another and another - and before I
realize it, I've spent hours or a good chunk of time surfing when I
should have been doing multiple other things. I love learning new
things - I just don't/can't trust myself.

#2. I keep my parent's account, and another that we share. They don't
want the "hassle" of going online. I keep trying to get them into the
computer classes at the Community Center, so they will see and hear
different angles on the idea.

#3 And, really, I like the idea of not having to go online every time I
need an email. I can search and read and answer offline, and, I admit,
I'm on a few lists like Flylady, which help me with being organized and
decluttered.

I do need to finish switching everything over to gmail. Right now my
main gmail account picks up from Earthlink. However, even if we ever
get moved, Earthlink is still only dial-up in that area, and I may have
to switch providers if I want to get around that. We will be about eight
blocks from the local cable provider, but their accounts are pretty
expensive.

With Gmail it doesn't matter what ISP account I have with whom. That's
nice.

Hi Donk,

Voodoo might be interesting :). A connection/email spell, hmmmm....

Anyway, I have a basic classic yahoo email account. I haven't seen
anything on the change to the "new" yahoo mail, which was supposed to
come at the beginning of the month, I thought. I have noticed more spam
escaping the spam folders, and many more search problems on my Nokia phone.

Nokia is yahoo-based; I use the email fairly often. I use it for backup,
forwarding some emails so I can quickly access them with my phone
instead of jumping through hoops to get into gmail.

I agree with you on the sync situation. If we weren't paying for the
phone line and/or I had a decent faster connection both here and at the
"new" place, then I think things would be better. I'm going to try one
more option, see how it goes, then possibly call a family meeting on the
whole idea of going full cloud.

XMPD - I love Google calendar and their alerts. I dropped Yahoo!'s
versions several years ago. I'm now moderating a Yahoogroups list, so
I'll have to learn those calendar commands again.

I did Eudora for years, and the newest version doesn't look half bad,
but I've never tried or looked at Calypso.

Christopher - I've definitely noticed that occasionally my connection
gets "dropped" and Earthlink never notices it; I don't get the red X
that tells me I'm offline. Avast updates fairly regularly also, so I
assumed that was enough to keep the connection live. But more and more,
that's not sufficient, even when trying to update my programs. Have fun
trying to do a 90+ MB update on dial up! Even with a dedicated line,
I've had a downloader show days and/or several hours to go, and that
just doesn't happen.

I hope I haven't missed anyone.

So, here is my game plan:

1. Back Tbird up again, at least once.
2. Look at Calypso, but I was browsing this morning and saw a good
suggestion for Claws, so if Calypso's not better I'll switch to Claws.
3. Give Earthlink a call and see what the chances are of them bringing
faster-than-dial-up to where we're moving. Would be wonderful if they
are, but it's been 2 years since the tornado and I haven't heard of any
movement in that direction. I could go faster here, but what would be
the point if I can't there?
4. Sit down and discuss going to full online for email. It's been awhile
since Mom's done a lot with her account anyway. May not be a concern
anymore.

Right now my biggest concern (Yawn!) is going to bed and to sleep.
Thanks again for the replies.

Theresa
