Yes, it's not about rushing to buy big and expensive hardware, it's about rather building something minimal and less expensive, than buying two ursp's. We would only have to plan and produce the pcb's altogether. Maybe the ordering of the components could also be done together for getting a better price, but that's not absolutely necessary.
Especially for people from Europe ( particularly students ;) ), the USRP is a little bit too expensive (in my opinion). What do you think?
