This is not only German. We use it in Scandinavia - and probably a
couple of other countries too.

Basically this is a result of a typo back in the medieval time. Since
this happened at about the same time as the introduction ot the first
"accidental", the B flat, somebody thought it would be a good idea to
use two different letters for those two notes, so the thing just kind a
stuck. Recently some musicians have tried to get rid of the thing, but
it's very, very hard to just cancel out a centuries long tradition, so I
guess we're stuck with it.
