Sorry Irwin, I understand this perfectly, and I understand that it is badly written.

My understanding of 1.6 would mean writing the above as:

G|G2G2A4|(FEF) D (A2G) G|\
w:She-nei zei-tim nich-__ra-tim_ be-
M:4/4 % Measure Change
K:C % Key Change
c2c2(B2c2)|(f2e2)e2d G|
w:gan na-'ul_ yats-_hi-ru. Le-

The spaces before the comments are optional but improve the reading.

The backslash is *not* a continuation character, its role is to avoid a forced
linebreak.
It allows the introduction of fields on a separate line which I generally find
preferable
to and clearer than inline fields.
It also allows the introduction of typesetting instructions to Musi(c/x)TeX by lines
beginning \
It would also allow the introduction of Extended information fields within the body of
the Tune. You may not want to do this now, but why should it be precluded
indefinitely?
1.6 did not have great multivoice capabilities so the issue of line (staffbreaks) were
never addressed. But it is only necessary to specify one voice (the first maybe) as a
masterline for the purposes of linebreaks so that the presence or absence of \ line
terminators in other voices is irrelevant.

I presume the Canzonetta.ABC example now requires updating to conform to your
new proposal. Alternatively, you can go back to the 1.6 standard, which is simple,
elegant and effective. If it has been misunderstood in the past, it wouldn't be the
first
case of a hisunderstood standard
