Hi list,

Since the moderator kept the issue open for discussion, I was pursuing the
entire discussion with
immense interest. The issue I want to raise here is not whether we should be
allowed to post off-topic messages or not, nor am I interested the least to
question the efficiency of the moderator's excelent job. On the former, I am
fully of the view that this group should strictly follow the topics which
are, of course, accessibility and other visual impairment related issues.
This is because we can simply share our other interests with our sighted
counterparts, but when it comes to accessibility issues, nobody can assist
or
guide us more effectively than other visually challenged people like us. On
the later, I fully agree that what the moderator is pursuing is a
painstaking job which, beyond any dout, he is doing perfectly.
So, I have no objection at all with regards to what to moderate. But, I must
confess, I doubt the manner in which this particular issue, at least, was
handled. the I have joined recently and I don't have any idea how
such issues was handled in previous occasions. But, by all probabilities,
the manner in which the moderator responded to the off-topic message in
question was harsh. He has mentioned about putting some idea regarding his
use of language against the off-topic message, but I don't remember what it
was. of course, there is a guideline, but we humans are vulnerable to errors
and tend to forget things.
The members have recently said that the language of the person in question
was inappropriate. No dout it was, but one must remember that such a harsh
language was coming as a reaction to a language wich was no better.
I am of the view, therefore, that the moderator could simply have objected
to the message in question by telling him to check out the guidelines once
more and it could have been done with full politeness in all probabilities.
I don't know the technicalities of list moderation, but I feell that, if
possible, the message could have been simply blocked and the person could
have been informed to this effect and what he should do in private, rather
than blasting him publically. After all, he was not posting of-topic
messages time and again.
On the whole, the so-called 'crap' mail he wrote to the list was nothing but
an obvious reaction to somewhat inappropriate response he received.

Regards

Viraj.
