Rishi,

There are many factors in security of online payments:

1. intermediate medium: As you mentioned that the site address you visit
should change to https from http. This means that the information that is
sent from your computer to the website's servers, is encripted hence no one
should be abel to understand it.

2. Security of data with the company: When you provide your credit card
information to a company, and if the company does not have enough safety
mechanisms to keep your information safe, your credit card number could fell
in the wrong hands. To be sure that your data is safe, you could do one of
three things.

a. If the website has the option of using your bank's gateway, use that, you
are quite safe. Many Indian websites provide the option of using your bank's
gateway or they may have a standard interface with a large bank. For
example, I had once made payment using city bank credit gateway although my
credit card is with icici bank.
b. Transact with a company that you can trust: mostly large e-commerce sites
are safe, i.e. amazon, ebay etc.
c. If you can not trust the company and gateway is also not available, try
if you can use paypal. Paypal is quite safe, you can provide your credit
card information to paypal and paypal will complete the transaction on your
behalf.

Subject: [AI] Purchasing online, how safe is it?

Hi friends,

I need to make a purchase online.

I'm told that when I get to the page where I am inputting my credit card
number, the beginning of the web URL will change from http to https. This
they proclaim, indicates that I'm on a secure page and the info can not be
found by a 3rd party. Is this true and safe enough? What else do I need to
keep in mind to ensure a safe transaction?

The company uses Click Bank to process their orders.

Awaiting your valuable inputs,

Regards,

Rishi.
