Dear Subhashji and others,
I have been struggling with this issue. I have no clear answer. I
simply want to briefly present a senario. It is although true that in
some cases, if we disclose our identity in advance, then we can expect
some arrangements for us before we reach at that place. However, a
contrary fact is that in India as well as outside, many times it had
happened with me that I could make my way in the mainstream without
declaring my disability. Thanks to for example internet communication
in some cases and due to the norm of confidentiality in others. I was
selected for various things based on my performance. Therefore, in
such cases, generally what happens is that people come to know about
my disability not before I have established my credencials. When they
come to know about it, then some times they are amused to find a
visually impaired in that role, which would lead to quite a lot of
admiration for me by them. Whilst at some other occasions, I have
realized that as soon as they come to know about my disability, they
start showing biased attitude. (I have skipped examples, because I am
in a hurry.) However, as you can see, in both kinds of cases, mention
of my disability has created difference in the attitude of others
towards me. I am not saying that because of this reason, we should or
we can hide our disability. However, the concern is somewhat
different. I am worried that the centralized storage of data and an
increasingly mendatory situation of its demonstration should not lead
to a situation where it becomes for an individual disabled to apply
his mind and decide where it is favorable or dangerous to mention
his/her disability in a world which is surely full of biased atitudes.
