Sir,
there are 2 types of dat files. one is the media files as you said. another
is some system files. unfortunately both have the same extension. so, no way
knowing the type just by the extension unless you the file itself as it is
in your case. windows media player plays .dat files. but if the program is
not associated in the registry, windows gives you a warning message saying
that opening them could damage your computer. but if you are sure, you can
prefer to ignore the warning and proceed to open with option. in the next
stage, the open with dialog asks you to choose the program to open that .dat
file. select windows media player. to avoid doing this all the time, check
the checkbox that says "always choose the program to open this kind of
files".
